For years, rumors of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life - until the unthinkable happens.

Haunting, beautiful, gripping

A haunting beautiful tale of a young girl abandoned by all. Gripping in its flowing thread of the marsh and the people who live around it, thoughtful with the gentle beauty of the descriptions of the marsh and harsh with how she is ostracised so readily by ignorance.
A fabulous read.

Where the Crawdads Sing

A book about the strength and resilience of human nature versus mans inhumanity to man (or woman in this case). Nevertheless, I became completely absorbed by this book and didn’t want it to end. A beautifully written masterpiece.

What a fabulous book.

The author’s comprehension of nature and setting made the story sing with authenticity. For the couple of days, it took me to read, I was transported to the North Carolina coastline of the fifties and sixties – it was like a mini-break for the wanderlust mind. The characters are authentic, emphatic and consistent as the story moves easily between their earlier and later years, ebbing and flowing to a powerful and thought-provoking conclusion. This book will undoubtedly become a classic as tales of its beauty spread – I want to read it again, already…

Slow start but would still recommend!

Absolutely beautifully written and I adored the story. For me it dragged A LOT to start with and I really struggled with the first 50-150 pages. For me it definitely lacked a ‘proper plot’ and it got to a point where I was struggling with the constant descriptions of nature, beach, animals etc as it didn’t feel like much else was happened. I did start to enjoy it towards the end but it is definitely a read that you have to put some effort into!
I would still recommend!

Incredible

Uniquely brilliant and moving, the writing style immerses you into the Geographic area it’s roots and above all the main Characters. For a novel it is so believable. A must read for anyone looking for something different compared to so many crime and violent books.

sublime

This book is every bit as entrancing and well written as those classics, echoes of Steinbeck, To Kill a Mockingbird mingled into a human tale entwined with nature and the stark reality of its beauty and humanity in all its forms. Wonderful rare find ❤️

Wonderful

I decided to start reading again in order to spend less time in front of computer and cell phone screens. Not really knowing what to begin with I went for the New York Times best seller at that time.
This book is undoubtedly one of the best novels I have ever read. It grips you from page one it’s wonderful descriptive narrative giving the reader onsite into the world in which the story is set.
This may be the author’s first novel but I hope it’s not the last.
