Description

Continuing the impressive debut fantasy series from author Peter V. Brett, The Desert Spear is book two of the Demon Cycle, pulling the reader into a world of demons, darkness and heroes.
The Deliverer has returned, but who is he?
Arlen Bales, formerly of the small hamlet of Tibbet’s Brook, learnt harsh lessons about life as he grew up in a world where hungry demons stalk the night and humanity is trapped by its own fear. He chose a different path; chose to fight inherited apathy and the corelings, and eventually he became the Painted Man, a reluctant saviour.
But the figure emerging from the desert, calling himself the Deliverer, is not Arlen. He is a friend and betrayer, and though he carries the spear from the Deliverer’s tomb, he also heads a vast army intent on a holy war against the demon plague… and anyone else who stands in his way.

The Desert Spear

Feel this knits the series in a creative an ingenious direction. Not only with the innovative plot but I believe the characters development deepens brilliantly. I genuinely hope this continues and cannot wait for book 3.

Desert spear

I found the painted man at a school Christmas fayre a couple of weeks ago. Not the usual type of book I'd go for but I was immediately hooked. I downloaded this one and read in 2 days. Highly recommend both books. Love the correlation between christianity and Islam. Fantastic and can't wait to see what happens to the one!

As a book should be

This and the first were both books I refused to put down once I started. Every opportunity to follow the adventure as it progresses. The only disappointment is when the end is reached and having to patiently wait for the next instalment.

The Desert Spear

Gripping book. An excellent addition to the series. Up there with George RR Martin and Joe Abercrombie as a contemporary fantasy author. Looking forward to Book 3 now.

Ripping!

Captivating characters and fleshing out of an early character into one that is going to have a larger part in the next book is brilliant.
Have read this twice now and still could not put it down.
So deamons sketching wards in the air. Could prove interesting...

The Desert Spear

I really like this book, not quite as much as 'The Painted Man' but a great tale well told.
Two faults that bugged me though. Why is this book written in 'American' English when the first isn't? and the books need to be proof read before publishing on iBooks, there are countless mistakes in spelling and on one occasion there are no spaces between the words!
Minor issues really but should be sorted before release.

Ripping read

This is even better than the first in the series and can't wait to read the next. You get so engrossed with each character that when it moves to the next it seems disappointing, until you carry on and then you just want to know more about that one. Fully engrossing.

Excellent.

The book is awesome and a great follow-up. Can't wait for the next one.
BUT.
PerlEEEEEASE! Apple, get the digital versions proof read. This one, similar to others on iBooks, is littered with spelling, format and grammatical errors.

Fantastic

Immersive, detailed, exciting, impossible to put down. The writing is of an extraordinarily high standard, the characters are believable and the world is so well put together it intrudes into your daily real life and thoughts. I don't usually read much fantasy, preferring factual or humour often, or else pure sci-fi, but I can't imagine anyone couldn't enjoy this series. Please get the third book out as soon as possible! Thanks for a great read.

Another amazing read!

Just finished desert spear, I was trying to drag it out as the 3rd book is not yet ready.
This series is possibly the BEST I've ever read, so many twists and turns, truly a complex and creative writing talent! Can't wait for the next book to be ready.

Superb

Please please please keep writing more Brett! I love it! Read the painted man, loved it so much that I bought the desert spear right away and finished it within a week! I don't usually read but i literally couldn't put it down. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to daydream in a world that seems so much more exciting than our own :-)

Compelling to the core.

Again Brett has pulled off another outstanding book of great subtlety and power. The story line is Byzantine in it's complexity and the swapping back to forth from character to character is pretty exhausting. But it works and it works well. I couldn't put it down and now feel bereft.
Again, themes of love, betrayal, morality, right and wrong are all here. It is operatic in it's intensity and sprawling in its ambition. But most of all it is a cracking good fun read that keeps you gripped. I cannot wait to read the next one.

Too expensive

I purchased the first book and enjoyed it on my iPod. £9+ however is top much for an ebook. If it does not come down in price I'll be buying the kindle version or the paperback. Will get the stars with the reasonable price.
Price now dropped. A fantastic read. Lower price too late for me though. I purchased the kindle version.

Amazing ! But the price!!!!!!!

The series are the most amazing books I've read in a long while. However I downloaded the desert spear on Kindle for £ 2.99! What's the deal with these MAD prices. How can you justify paper backed prices on a digital book?

The Painted Man

Just as other reviews have said. Loved it. I too am concerned over Apple's pricing !!!! £9.99 !!! Come on Apple I as others are loyal Apple customers who deserve better. I have the Kindle app on my I- phone and on there it is £7.99 for the same book, err, what's going on. However both sites and others including Waterstones etc are charging far too much for E-books. I prefer the layout of I-Books but will vote with my wallet...... COME ON APPLE get a grip.

Coretastic!

Loved this sequel to The Painted Man. Well told weaving the characters around each other. Only one criticism is Leesha annoyed me terribly! For such a wise Herb Gatherer she made some awful decisions!
All in all I couldn't recommend this book and The Painted Man enough! Cant wait for book 3!

Great book but Apple, sort the pricing system out!!!! Disgustingly over priced and I think quite offensive to ask £9.99 for a ebook!!!!

The Painted Man

Fantastic book! Thoroughly enjoyed the content, style & intertwining of the narrative! However despite desperately wanting to read part two of his amazing tale, I refuse to spend £9.99 on a non tangible book!!! This is within an hard back book price yet I will have nothing to show for it, not on my bookshelf or coffee table in years to come!
Apple sort out your pricing strategy immediately please...

Sequels are rarely as good as the first book....

... But this one is! The story remains strong as the main characters continue on their quest to fight the corelings. There are some great fast paced action scenes woven into a complex and compelling storyline. Roll on Book no 3!

This is ridiculous, I just voted with my wallet and purchased it for £2.99 via the kindle app.

Not as flawed as people think

This books is the sequel to The Painted Man and occurs just after the events of the first book.
After establishing The Painted man as a main character in the first book, the first half of this book follows the progress of Ahmann asu Hoshkamin am'jardir am'Kaji from his selection as a boy of nine years old until he is proclaimed as The Deliverer.
The second half of the book then switches points of view to Leesha Paper, of Cutters Hollow and their perpetual fight against demons and the new threat of the entire force of The Desert Spear.
In this book the Painted man takes a backseat in terms of narrative. The majority of the book is from Jardir and Leesha points of view. We are introduced to some more secondary characters and revisit old characters from the first book which makes for some interesting if not frustrating ( in the case of Reena) reading.
I can see how the split in the points of view and the lack of decent Arlen storyline would be annoying. The main reason I bought the book was to see development of Arlen, The Painted Man, which was present but severely limited. I enjoyed the history of Jardir and Abban at the beginning but grew weary of it towards the first half of the book. At the second half I was happy to be reading more about the people of Deliverers Hollow and Tibbets Brook but annoyed at the bad plot and dialogue that Arlen was being given, not to mention Rojer, who's character does nothing but infuriate me.
All in all I DID enjoy this book, even though there are some things I would have changed. What I hate is that I paid the same amount for a digital copy as I would have for the paperback. I would be happy to pay the marked price if a decent cover was provided inside the book itself and if the dialogue wasn't riddled with spelling mistakes.

The best since David Gemmel

I read mostly Epic and Fantasy books, and the Painted Man series is just the best I have read in years. Probably the best since David Gemmel.

Annoyed

Apple need to seriously sort out the pricing if I'm going to continue with iBooks. I bought this a few days ago for £9.99. Now it's suddenly £2.99 - what's with the seemingly random prices?! What can't they just settle at a price around 2/3 (as a suggestion) of the print version? Book was great but will definitely reconsider future purchases.

Great set of books

Couldn't put this book (or his first, The painted man) down. Made my train rides fly past.
The price was a toughie to wrestle with and really needs to be sorted out. Way too much for a book.
But the story was great. Love the authors style and the mix of viewpoints from each of the characters. To me these stories are more about the people than the fantasy world they're in.
Pity the 3rd instalment (the daylight war?) ain't gonna be around for a while yet.

Great book but pricey

A cracking follow on to the painted man but £9.99 is too expensive for any ebook.
