Description

Discover the beautiful stories of Michael Morpurgo, author of Warhorse and the nation’s favourite storyteller
Joy and heartbreak combine in this bittersweet tale of a champion greyhound’s journey through life – and from owner to owner…
“The sack wasn't just drifting gently along like everything else, it was turning of its own accord. There was definitely something inside it, struggling against the side of the plastic bag, kicking at it, squeaking and squealing in terror. He had no idea what it might be, only that it was alive and in danger of drowning.”
When Patrick saves a litter of greyhound puppies from the canal, he can’t bear to hand them all over to the RSPCA. He pleads with his parents: couldn’t he just keep one of them? But nothing will convince them and Patrick cries himself to sleep – only to be woken by a greyhound puppy licking his face!
Patrick christens his puppy Best Mate, and that’s what he becomes. Patrick’s favourite thing is to watch Best Mate running at full stretch on the heath, a speeding bullet, a cheetah-dog. Until one day Best Mate is kidnapped by a greyhound trainer, and begins a new life as a champion race dog. Suzie, the greyhound trainer’s step-daughter, loves Best Mate on first sight and gives him a new name, Bright Eyes. But what will happen when he can’t run any more?

Born to run

This book really touched me because I have two dogs of my own and when the elder one Tosca died I was devastated and I didn't think anyone else could feel such pain as I at that time.
This book also helped me to understand what you have to do when a part of your family dies, not only a pet but a person as well, and that is, "move on but never forget" which basically means that you can move on and not be sad all your life but you can't forget the good memories that you had with that person or pet and that saying has brought me a long way.
I hope whoever is reading this now will think about what I have just told you and don't just think. Think long and hard.

Depressing

I'm also up for a good cry but this book made me want to throw up I was crying so hard. Yet another example of why his books are too depressing. I cannot imagine this happening to my dog. The mere idea makes me want to self harm. The ending wasn't even happy! The first owner didn't know it was him! I know it sounds stupid but that dog must have felt such an enormous sense of rejection and sadness that was the point at which I vowed never to read another Michael Morpurgo. Imagine if you were separated from you mother and when you eventually found her she had moved on and didn't even know it was you! Can't see how anyone would enjoy this book

Fantastic!

After having read this book three times,I think that I can safely say that this book is an emotional book that will always get you crying no matter how many times you have read it! It is a book about a greyhound who is very unfortunate and has many owners(and names! He suffers all of the things that neglected, stolen and homeless dogs go through and I think that Michael Mopurgo has done a fantastic job in showing the world how badly we treat animals and how we need to stop and think about the consequences. He has done an amazing job and will continue to do so throughout his career .

The Times

An fantastically heart throbbing book, this has got to be the best book ever. This just sums up the way that cruelty yo animals occurs and how the human race can not only be discusting, but also a peaceful and friendly nation - The Times
