Description

In June 2005 four US Navy SEALs left their base in Afghanistan for the Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al-Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less than twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs was alive.
This is the story of team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing. Blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing, Luttrell endured four desperate days fighting the al-Qaeda assassins sent to kill him, before finding unlikely sanctuary with a Pashtun tribe who risked everything to protect him from the circling Taliban killers.

A good read

Tough guys doing a tough job, in an all consuming environment. It bought back lots of fond memories of similar British experiences.

True Insperation

An inspiring read that will touch the heart and sole of even the toughest. I felt the joy, the sorrow and the compassion. We may not all be SEALS but we can learn from their strength and that of the ordinary Afghan tribesman who's humanity and extraordinary sense of right outshines the evil men that surround their homes in the beautiful peaceful mountains of the Hindu Kush.

Humbling

Having seen ML being interviewed by Anderson Cooper, he came across as a very honest and sincere SEAL operator and therefore I bought the book. This was the first time I have read a book of this nature since the infamous Bravo 2 Zero and by comparison, this is a better read. Full of patriotism, sincerity, pride and professionalism, it gives you a good account of just what some of the Special Forces were doing in the face of some severe opposition in arduous and volatile terrain.
Worth the read as is "No Easy Day" by Mark Owen whereby you get an even better insight into Tier 1 American Special Forces.

Better than the movie, as always

Great read, very much a page turner. Heroic doesn't go far enough to describe the actions recalled in this book. And a surprising little fact about the Pashtun tribal law, that allowed this story to be told will make you think again about the afghan people who abide by it.

Absorbing story

This book reads like an American made movie script but if you can get past this and read the story it is an incredible tale of bravery at its highest. These soldiers who fight for their country are unsung heros. Maximum respect.

Lone survivor

I quite enjoyed it and bits of it are very emotional to read; he does go on a bit about the SEALS and I was beginning to get irritated that he didn't appear to have heard of the SAS, but he did eventually concede that point. Not the best written book in the world, and descriptively doesn't quite get across the majesty of the Hindu Kush, but it's a great read nonetheless, and he's clearly a pretty awesome guy.
