Description

The Duke of Atreides has been manoeuvred by his arch-enemy, Baron Harkonnen, into administering the desert planet of Dune. Although it is almost completely without water, Dune is a planet of fabulous wealth, for it is the only source of a drug prized throughout the Galactic Empire. The Duke and his son, Paul, are expecting treachery, and it duly comes - but from a shockingly unexpected place.
Then Paul succeeds his father, and he becomes a catalyst for the native people of Dune, whose knowledge of the ecology of the planet gives them vast power. They have been waiting for a leader like Paul Atreides, a leader who can harness that force ...
DUNE: one of the most brilliant science fiction novels ever written, as engrossing and heart-rending today as it was when it was first published half a century ago.
Joint winner of the HUGO AWARD for best novel, 1966

Without a doubt one of the best stories I’ve read in my life. In time I can see this book becoming what LOTR is for the fantasy genre in reverence but for Sci-Fi. I implore you to read this book if you have any interest in the genre

Very good but the ending was a bit anticlimactic but that is fixed by the next book which has a great ending

I read the Dune books as a teenager and thought they were brilliant.
On returning to Dune in my later years, I find it outstanding, and see how it underpins the greats of science fiction that followed.
A breathtaking story

Certainly for me it is. I am quite a wide reader I can only say there really is nothing like it. The truly extraordinary aspect is you could be reading a history of the future. The concepts, almost alarmingly so, are as apt and insightful today as when the book was written in the early 60s. Well worth reading the whole Dune series by Frank Herbert. Truly Epic in every way.

I read this on the recommendation of fellow reviewers and websites. What I found was a rich world with fascinating concepts. Shame about the slow writing and the violent, sexist undertones. Not to mention the rubbish ending...

Great Sci-fi!

Great book that made me watch the film straight after reading. The film was terrible by the way and apparently made worse if you read the book first. Still started pretty confusing at the beginning but really came together and rallied towards the end. Classic and recommended.

Well after hearing the old man harp on about this book time and time again, I decided to buy it one night when I was bored. Well... Where to begin, epic from start to finish, amazing views on politics and religion in a fictional world, and no matter what happens in the book, it's always "just one more page". Buy it the night you don't have work, your in for a late one!!

Possibly the finest literary work of science fiction, plots within plots within plots keeps the wheels turning on the machine that is the dune universe. You will become engulfed in a believable struggle between ancient enemies, enthralled in the writing of a master.

Brilliant book & author! I was introduced to this book by my dad a few years ago and can't stop reading it along with rest of the series.
Definite must read for all sci-fi fans out there.
