Description

'Timely, impassioned and brilliantly argued' Rod Liddle, Sunday Times
'A spirited and exhilarating read' Joan Bakewell, Guardian
Dawkins attacks God in all his forms.
He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry and abuses children.
The God Delusion is a brilliantly argued, fascinating polemic that will be required reading for anyone interested in this most emotional and important subject.

Excellent

I have read this book several times and think it is excellent. I have also read several book which purport to refute Dawkin's claims. (They don't.) I have noticed one common thread throughout most of these so called refutations - the anger and vitriol with which theists attack Dawkins ideas and sometimes Dawkins himself. I think this is because Richard Dawkins has precisely and surgically uncovered the raw nerve of truth.

Excellent logical and well researched...

It's reassuring to know that I am not alone in my inability to accept the absurdity of religion against the available scientific evidence. Peace, equality, love, and humility are the only possible saviours of humanity.

Excellent Read

Even as a child I had worries about a God figure. I bought this book when it was first published and as yet I have read nothing that can prove it in correct. I love the logical honest truthful way the ideas are explained and every book I have read trying to dis prove it makes me believe more that we are the driving force in our our own lives. Thank you Dawkins, this book is my so called bible, but to me it is a bible of truth based on fact not fiction.

Finally!

Ever since I had (a glimpse) of what some people regard as a 'spiritual experience' - or perhaps something along the lines of a 'subtle, unified awareness', I came to an understanding that this is what all the religions were getting at when they describe or introduce the word 'God'. However, it is then easy to become lost in a religion, assuming you must have got close to 'God'. Now, finally someone comes along (who I am assuming can relate to or understand this experience that a fair amount of people have encountered) and stubbornly and indignantly separates the two concepts of God. The metaphorical pantheistic God along with Einsteins 'Cosmic Religion' - which actually supports the above experience, and the supernatural God, which seems to be either a foolishly exaggerated version of the pantheistic god, or simply a complete fallacy. So for all those who regard Dawkins or Stephen Hawking or Einstein as a non believer or an opposer of religion is a fool - because they simply have an enlightened understanding of what 'God' actually is and have had the GUTS or SANITY to actually define it or describe it, thereby simultaneously exposing the supernatural 'God' as a false delusion. Theists who follow one religion and believe in a supernatural, separate, intervening or personal 'God' would seem to have a complete lack of understanding of what 'God' actually is!

Essential reading

Life-changing! Thought provoking, stimulating, enlightening and liberating. Intelligently written, extremely well researched and backed up; plenty of useful references and links.
Made me realise how gullible I'd been all these years for ever believing in a supernatural god and all its contradictions. May take some courage to read if you have strong faith but I urge you to try it. It answers so many questions. And yes, you CAN find comfort and happiness in atheism, far more so than the guilt, oppression and violence associated with religions that lie about being compassionate :)

Delusion all round

Negative evidence is NOT evidence. Even Dawkins doesn't have a clue for sure what happens after death. Nobody does. And while I would agree that organized religion has caused a great deal of strife over the course of human history, I don't agree that it is in an individual's best interests to tell them that the personal faith which gives them comfort and solace in their life, is a pack of lies and that they should desist. There is a world of difference between mad Ayatollahs who issue fatwas and encourage legions to take to the streets in violence, and -for example- an elderly widow who needs to believe that one day she'll be reunited with the husband she has just lost. For pity's sake, live and let live. Let those who want to, believe and those who don't, don't. And that goes for the most strident American Evangelist, as well as the Dawkins and Pullmans. It shouldn't be about "I'm right and you're wrong." it should be about respecting each other's values.
I know for a fact that Santa Claus doesn't exist but I still support my child's belief. And anyone who tries to take that belief away, before the child comes to reason in their own time, has absolutely no heart. Just as anyone who would tell that widow that she'll never see her loved one again, has no heart or compassion either.

Simply not his best book

Just disappointed by the weaknesses in this book.
Professor Dawkins is an excellent communicator in his own field, but not here. Arguments should be as simple as possible ... but not simpler. There is too much point scoring rhetoric and preaching to the choir. I know some 'embarrassing' fundamentalists, but not all faith heads can be painted into this corner and dispatched in the same way.

Straw man arguments abound in this book.

I'm an atheist, but unimpressed by this book. It sets up Christianity as something terrible, then says that it's terrible. In fact, Christianity is mostly harmless.

Totally Rational and Logical

Please, if you are at all curious about the beliefs that people have in the supernatural - read this. It is a clear, intelligent, rational discussion questioning the basis for these beliefs and our acceptance of them in society.
The only people who will not enjoy this book are those who have such faith in the supernatural that no amount of evidence or logic could convince them otherwise.
