Description

During the Second World War Eric Lomax was forced to work on the notorious Burma-Siam Railway and was tortured by the Japanese for making a crude radio.
Left emotionally scarred and unable to form normal relationships, Lomax suffered for years until, with the help of his wife, Patti Lomax, and of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, he came terms with what happened. Fifty years after the terrible events, he was able to meet one of his tormentors.
The Railway Man is a story of innocence betrayed, and of survival and courage in the face of horror.

The most emotional book I have ever read

A stark reminder of the pain, suffering and sacrifice that people like Eric Lomax went through to provide with the freedom we take for granted today. A huge debt this world owes you all. An amazing book a must read for all.

Compelling

This book may have started a little slow, but it builds up to a book that had me both gripped and saddened and what man can do to each other!

The railway Man a unforgettable read

I found this book to be fantastic!!! I could not put it down what an insight to what those courageous brave men had to endure. It is certainly very humbling. It is such a shame that Eric Lomax had to wait so long before receiving therapy and suffered in silence for so long. God bless him.

The railway man

A riveting read around a subject I knew virtually nothing. Eric Lomax's story of life as a POW in Japanese controlled south east Asia is compelling; a well written autobiography, which if we're not for its closing chapter would leave the reader feeling as bitter and angry towards the Japanese as Eric is himself.

Amazing!

What a moving and ultimately encouraging story of forgiveness, I wanted to read this all the time, it takes a lot for a book to catch me like that.
A lesson to us all.

A moving tale

This is not the sort of book I would usually read; however, Mr. Lomax describes his terrible experiences in Thailand during the war and the long lasting effects they had on him with disturbingly matter of fact delivery.
His description of his feelings and mental state along with the wonderful help he received leads to an uplifting end.
