Description

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!
King says he wanted to know what happened to Danny Torrance, the boy at the heart of The Shining, after his terrible experience in the Overlook Hotel. The instantly riveting DOCTOR SLEEP picks up the story of the now middle-aged Dan, working at a hospice in rural New Hampshire, and the very special twelve-year old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.
On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless - mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the 'steam' that children with the 'shining' produce when they are slowly tortured to death.
Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father's legacy of despair, alcoholism and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him and a job at a nursing home where his remnant 'shining' power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes 'Doctor Sleep.'
Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival . . .

Excellent!

Was sceptical about a sequel to the Shining and the blurb did not sound good. However, was pleasantly surprised! I got fully submerged into this book and the character of Dan Torrance. To the point that I kinda miss him now I've finished! Would definitely recommend this book and, no, you don't need to have read the Shining. Did laugh at King having yet another go at Kubrick in the author's note though...

Long time coming...!!

For a King fan of over 30 years and a lover of The Shining (both book and Kubric's masterpiece of an adaptation), Doctor Sleep was a long time coming. Every page played out in my head, after about 2 pages I was there, I could picture everything so vividly as is normal for me reading SK. Couldn't put it down and loved it...a brilliantly written idea that answered some of my old questions about what if, and what happened after. What skill to link them so well after such a long layoff!!awesome x

Balance the books?

Well I have read this book and I thought it was excellent. If I was an author I would be very annoyed with someone giving my work 1 star just to "balance the books" in relation to previous reviews.

Remarkable sequel

I honestly didn't understand how sk could top the shining but he did this and more in this book. Sk has always stated that the original film didn't reflect the true values of the book ; namely the darker side of families and the degeneration of relationships. This book is one of the best he's produced in years (since bag of bones) and I've read it over and over as I love the characters and the bravery they all show in the face of overwhelming adversity. It's still chilling- but more humane than some of the work he does.

Must read..!!

People always say the sequel is never as good as the original, SK proves them wrong with this book.
It's an absolute must read for any SK fan, no need to read the shining first but it will make you want to read it after.

Balancing the books

Three of the ten reviews below have awarded this book with 5 stars without actually reading it. I am awarding 1 star to compensate for this. Can "I haven't read this but ..." reviewers please limit their comments to chat rooms.

Doctor Sleep

As an avid Stephen King fan I was interested to find out what had happened to Danny Torrance. The Shining is my favourite book so I was concerned it might ruin the character. How I was wrong. Brilliantly written, new characters who were engaging along with old characters who brought memories of the Shining back. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good scare. But I also recommend reading the Shining first. 😁

Steam....

Hmm a sequel....rarely a good idea - for every decent one there is a dozen poor ones. However Doctor Sleep for the most part pulls it off. Wisely this is a very different story to the Shining - not merely treading over old ground. The only drawback is the villains come across rather underpowered and incompetent - at times I felt sorry for them!

I loved this book as much as I loved the shinning. I m not a massive Stephen King fan as his books can be too melancholic most often than not. But this is definitely a must read, was hooked from begging to end.

To OMH

I do believe it's the sequel not the prequel to the shining that's what I'm sure I heard Stephen king say in his interview the other week but you don't have to have read shining to enjoy dr sleep

Response to OMH

I don't think the book is based after The Shining is it? I think it's a prequel, or at least that is what I have heard.

OMH

I can't wait for this. I just finished reading The Shining AGAIN this morning - I can't put a number on how many times I've re-read that book. I love the character of Danny. I hope King lets us know what happened to Mr Hallorran, I'm sure he will. Roll on September! Safe to say I've preordered the book.
