In THE POLAR TREASURE Doc, in hand-to-hand combat, deliberately disables and mutilates his opponents. The majority will never recover. When he uses a gun, in self defense, he invariably shoots to kill! He does have a mysterious way to make opponents become unconscious at a touch of his hand, but this is not the "nerve pinch" of later novels, but rather a totally preposterous gadget Doc wears on his hands!
