Description
Very little geographic research is available on leatherfolk and place, even though many geographic studies on gender and sexual orientation in the gay and lesbian communities have been undertaken. Leatherfolk—gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgendered individuals—have been participating in leather runs for a number of decades. Attending and participation in leather runs is one aspect of the leather subculture that is common within the gay and leather community. Leather runs are structured organized annual events where people with similar interests in leather gather for friendship, brotherhood, and camaraderie. They are places where masculine personal and sexual identities are socially developed and fostered. The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of the performance of identity and place among leatherfolk at leather runs. Using Judith Butler’s concepts of performativity, the objective of this research is to discover how leather runs socially construct a sexual identity among leatherfolk.
