One of Patricia Wentworth’s early stand-alone thrillers, The Black Cabinet combines romantic suspense with espionage. When a young Englishwoman, Margaret Langton, takes a post as secretary to a powerful but secretive politician, she finds herself entangled in a network of international intrigue centered on a mysterious “black cabinet” of state secrets. As she uncovers coded messages, vanishing documents, and suspicious deaths, Margaret realises someone inside the government is leaking intelligence and that she is being used as a pawn. With danger closing in, she must decide whom she can trust—including a man who may be either her ally or her enemy. The novel mixes high-stakes plotting, period atmosphere, and a resourceful heroine to produce a fast-moving story about loyalty, betrayal, and courage. Though not part of the Miss Silver series, it foreshadows Wentworth’s later style of combining puzzles with emotional tension.
