Description

'Fantasy as it ought to be written' George R.R. Martin
Robin Hobb returns to her best loved characters in a brand new series.
Tom Badgerlock has been living peaceably in the manor house at Withywoods with his beloved wife Molly these many years, the estate a reward to his family for loyal service to the crown.
But behind the facade of respectable middle-age lies a turbulent and violent past. For Tom Badgerlock is actually FitzChivalry Farseer, bastard scion of the Farseer line, convicted user of Beast-magic, and assassin. A man who has risked much for his king and lost more…
On a shelf in his den sits a triptych carved in memory stone of a man, a wolf and a fool. Once, these three were inseparable friends: Fitz, Nighteyes and the Fool. But one is long dead, and one long-missing.
Then one Winterfest night a messenger arrives to seek out Fitz, but mysteriously disappears, leaving nothing but a blood-trail. What was the message? Who was the sender? And what has happened to the messenger?
Suddenly Fitz's violent old life erupts into the peace of his new world, and nothing and no one is safe.

Excellent and simply beautiful

It wasn’t the most exciting of Fitz’s chapters in his life but reading his happiness for most of this book felt well deserved if foreboding of the future troubles to befall our beloved assassin.

Wow!

As wonderful to be back as ever! Amazing read, great detail, Climatic ending!
But...annoying when things are obvious to the reader but the characters are ignorant...

Immensely enjoyable read

Real depth and intelligence that avoids many of the usual trite pitfalls of predictability many best sellers fall into. Very honest characters who don't always 'see' what's in front of them they way they tend to on television :)

Superb!

Years after The Tawny Man trilogy, Robin Hobb takes us back to the Six Duchies and what a pleasure this is! The ingredients that made her previous series so addictive are all there: mystery, adventure, danger, magic and more. A cast of new, fascinating characters appears alongside our old favourites and Fitz's voice is as strong as ever. I cannot recommend it enough and I cannot wait to know what happens next!

An old friend

From the moment I began reading I was drawn back into Fitz's world. Couldn't put it down. Such depth and ability to move me. I love character Fitz and this new series is a page turner. I am only in early chapter and can't put it down. If you loved Hobs other work you will be captivated with this new series. I am. PS. I have just finished and I am in agony to have to wait until book 2 is written. Wonderful wonderful book. Introduces a great new character. The story is a roller coaster of emotion. Anticipation, grief, joy, suspense. Hobb has created a perfect follow up to Fitz and the fool and I can't wait to devour the next book.
