initially i thought my piano was wrong and needed to be tuned, but then i realised that the app was listening to the note as a note lower than it actually was. it would be fine, but it means that i’m playing all the notes wrong now, so i’m not sure what to do about that. it’s a shame really.

I liked the look of this app and was certainly prepared to pay the rather hefty £125 a year to give it a try. As an absolute beginner I was using my daughters piano, who achieved Grade 7.
However, lesson 1. It recognised middle c on my piano first time, then thought I was playing b, even though it was the same key I was pressing, then thought key d was c#.
I gave up after 10 minutes, cancelled the subscription and uninstalled what looked to be a good app. My daughters piano is tuned regularly, and the fact it recognised the note from the piano one minute, then didn’t the next sends alarm bells ringing. I would have to press wring keys to progress, meaning I could never learn anything on this.
Others obviously don’t have the issue I had, but from my experience I would avoid this. Shame.

I love the game it’s epic and so fun learning piano although I already know the tunes such as Beethoven one. The game teaches u loads the videos are good guides and tutorials
A thing is that I don’t have the subscription and u have to pay just to learn a tune like people can’t pay for it and people don’t want to pay just for a tune they may not be able to afford it so maybe u could plz either lower the price or just put it free because people say what kind of thing they like and want to learn like you just have to play the tune once and that’s it people want to do what they enjoy I have so much to explain about this but I just can’t but I hope u see this and do something about this

If you want to learn piano, this is not for you because if you’re playing right note it says you’re playing the wrong note and it can’t listen properly. Literally of my mum helped me play the piano it doesn’t work it’s literally the worst app you can download to learn the piano, plus if you want to learn with your family it is over £14 or dollars if you’re in America if you want to learn by yourself it’s £7 literally it does one good thing about it it gives you seven day free trial, but that’s not enough, I’m literally I’m writing this review because I’ve just tried to learn the piano playing the right notes and it does not work. I’ve tried and tried and tried doesn’t work worst piano app ever

I have always wanted to learn piano and after 14 months of using Simply Piano I can play at an intermediate level. The course structures are so enjoyable and you can start playing songs you love at a basic level from the start.
I’m pretty staggered at the amount of reviews giving one star ratings because you have to pay. What planet do you live on? Do you work for free? If you don’t want to pay then move on. I can only imagine the costs of licensing the rights to the huge library of music within the app. You also get access to Simply guitar.
The cost off this app is a bargain compared to face to face lessons and I highly recommend it for both value for money and effectiveness.

Great way to learn

I love this app. I downloaded it in March at the beginning of lockdown and try to use it every day. I did learn the piano as a teenager, but found it difficult then and only retained tiny % of that learning. This app made it so easy to learn and now feel confident playing quite fast pieces with both hands. I found it best to go through all the songs available in a level before moving up, as sometimes at the up of a level the skills and muscle memory aren’t quite there. Also the notes down always pick up, but if I turn down volume on the app and keyboard up a touch they pick up fine. This is probably a technical issue on my side, as it does recommend using with headphones. The new addition of the sheet music course is a great idea, as the moving notes is a bit lazy and I was worried about that when moving onto using sheet music. But I’ve tried a few of the songs and I needn’t of worried. Anyway, great app. The cost may seem expensive, but if you feature in the each face to face lesson with a piano teacher would cost you around £20 or more, it’s well worth it!!

The app itself is good, easy recognition and information that sticks in your head. However I’m giving it three stars because of the price. Personally I think seven pounds a month is a bit much, I’d like to make a suggestion on how to attract more people, here is the formula: lower price means more attention, more attention means more subscriptions, more subscriptions means the same amount of money you would normally get. You could either have very few people paying very high prices and struggle with money or you could have loads of people that won’t struggle with money, and still learning piano as a bonus. I’d recommend changing the price from seven pounds to three or four pounds a month. Thank you so much for taking this review into consideration, have a great day.
Plus you might want to stop making scenarios in ads, (it gets rather cringey at times).

Amazing app 100%recommend!

I got this app for my nine-year-old daughter Maggie, I was dubious about whether I would get my money‘s worth but was incredibly surprised and delighted when she is still completely committed three months later and playing at a standard I never would have believed so quickly! The app takes beginners in a fun way with great modern songs through learning the basics of piano, starting simple and building with two hands very quickly, sharps, flats and chords. It’s super interactive, never boring, lots of Gamification and reward, but also checks in regularly that the students can read from straightforward sheet music. It’s a joy to watch her progress and she loves it! I wish this app had been around when I was learning piano 30+ years ago!!

I am a musical person. I do musical theatre, sing in an award winning youth choir and i have played things like recorder in a club when i was in primary school😂. I dabbled in piano when i was like 9 but i never played anything properly, it would just be melody lines with 1 finger on 1 note at a time. I used to listen to people who would play the piano (not amazingly, but better than i was) and i would think, "Wow, I could never play that,". Well now I believe i can. I started playing again in January of this year, i couldn't remember any basic chords i had learnt or any of the notes i had learnt to read in sheet music. Now, I can play several chords, read music, play my favourite songs, all because of one app. I can now play the things i thought i never could. It is expensive.. but it is totally worth it! In my opinion, it is better than having in person lessons m as you can play whatever you like, whenever you like. I haven't gotten bored of this app and because you can see a set path it helps me know what i am aiming for. Sorry if this was a bit of a ramble, but this app is 110% worth it.

Seems a bit expensive compared to many apps but it is well worth it in comparison to the price of piano lessons! Me and my 9 year old boy are really enjoying it. Practice whenever and loads of songs to go at once you get the first few notes down. It really is teaching us piano and it’s fun too. Up to five people can share the same app and pay just once.
Great app well worth the money.
One suggestion, it would be good to have a flash card option from the main screen to make it easier to practice, and also something to help learn the note names, not just where the notes are on the keyboard. This is more transferable to other instruments if the notes names are consolidated.
Can you do Simply cello please! 😀

Ok so I got a piano for my birthday and wanted to learn so I got this app. I taught me all the notes and read basic music which at first was good. It also helped me with my posture and how to work my fingers. It first asked me what song to learn first so I picked perfect by Ed Sheeran. So I went through the steps but the on one stage which was the last one, which was to play the song, it said I had to pay and to do a 7 week trial or something but I heard when you say start trial it will automatically start steeling your money after the trial ends so I’m quite disappointed that it won’t let me play songs without paying and I really wanted to learn but this is no help at all. From my experience I would say don’t get the app it is a waste of time and the adverts only show people what paying looks like and it never shows you have to pay which is kinda annoying. So please only get the app if your willing to pay the makers.

This app is not welcomed to everyone!!!!!!

I started to use simply piano years ago because I really wanted to learn. It was easy to use and fun way easier and fun than using a book. I really loved it then you never had to pay for anything it was free for everyone to use. But a few weeks after that I didn't have piano anymore and I was devastated, until this Christmas I got a piano and I was super excited to redownload this amazing app and that's when I found out you have to pay and was super expensive and I knew for sure my mom wasn't going going to pay all that money and it would hurt me very much because I only get to use it for a week not even a month just a week that's why simply piano is for everyone because some people don't have all that money and it would be very hard for them because people have bills to pay and people giving their money away to this app are going to go broke for sure so I am really unhappy that this app has started to charge people when they never used to!

Gamified approach annoying

Soo initially I was impressed with this app… because i already know how to read music and finger placement etc it was good to just get a refresher on this. And yes it was forcing me to play popular tunes mainly I thought this would change once I had completed the essentials because I had selected a classical route. However it soon became apparent I was not going to be learning stuff rigorously it was just going to be a matter of hitting the right notes In the right order then bingo the next level is available. And it’s so essential to be able to repeat stuff to learn things properly and to adjust the tempo neither of which are available. And the tiresome arrangements of chart music is not my bag (why would I have selected the classical route otherwise?) I got this app on the reccomendation of friends and a promotion included with the piano. I so regret going or the annual subscription now as I cannot see any way of getting my money back.

I started using Simply Piano in October last year and I chose it as I saw what it did in its ads. When I started using it’s it was alright. Later on, it became boring and kept correcting me even though I played the right note (it showed the one I was supposed to be pressing). I also got quite stressed when playing and struggled to want to play on my piano because of this app. My mom started playing after and used the app; she found the same problem when playing. After all that, in January I decided to take a break but keep using other apps. I would keep seeing the ads come up though. In May, I began using the app again because my friend bought it up and I became curious if the app had changed. I sat at the piano and opened the app. I remembered all the notes from the last time but decided to start fresh. It struck me the same anxiety and pain from before. I couldn’t go anymore. Is it me being me or is the app just not working. In my case though, I would not recommend it. It has ruined my hopes of trying piano.

This a great piano app. It’s definitely worth it. We payed for the year subscription as this was like a substitute for piano lessons. It listens to the notes you play and, yes it does sometimes get it wrong. But no app is perfect! On day two I had already learned my G major cord, C major cord and D major cord. On day three I learned my E minor cord. If your worried you’ll only learn with an app don’t be! Simply piano sends you sheet music to practice with. If your experienced and don’t want to use it you still should as it gives you millions of different songs. Simply piano also offers you a free tutorial bit to decide if the app is for you. A quick warning: SimplyPiano is money. But it’s worth everything you pay for it. I love SimplyPiano and you will to. Please get it.

I played piano a little bit but never well as a kid, my boyfriend plays really well and has a keyboard that connects easily via bluetooth to the app which is awesome.
I LOVE the play section that unlocks after a few courses , it would be cool to be able to isolate hands with feedback while looking at the sheet music. Sometimes it’s nice to practice at my own pace but with the feedback that you have hit the right notes.
It would be cool if you did offer a reasonable monthly subscription, I did email about this but the price was £25 per month , in the end i’ve paid for 6 months and will hopefully get my money’s work and see if i need a few more months or not after that or if i can just buy a book once i have refreshed sheet music. If it was a monthly £8 like netflix i’d be more willing to commit to it rather that the full amount coming out at once.
Overall it’s super fun and i like the style of the app more than the others I tested out in terms of how it teaches how to read. The design of the app is modern compared to others too!
But yeah defo needs to be able to isolate hands for the play section at least!

you may as well just get a PROFESSIONAL teacher to teach you to play. If this app also taught you the more advanced techniques I would’ve rated it a lot higher, but you can only learn so far with Simply. I give a two star rating because i feel one star is a bit harsh and you get credit for motivating people to play but like i said it doesn’t teach you to play more advanced repertoire like Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff you name it. But I think it could be used as a good starting point for learners who need motivation or who just need a solid starting point so well done with that. However, I think you need to expand the amount you can learn for free or just make it all free and help people with the more advanced pieces and techniques they need to learn even if they have a teacher already the amount of extra help you COULD give them is very high and you have a good potential, but for now I think I will keep my rating until further action.
Thanks for reading my review

I’ve been using this app for the last year (during the UK lockdown) and I’ve found it absolutely brilliant. Although the cost is something that most probably aren’t used to, you can definitely see why it is worth it once you’ve experienced the app. My justification was that only a couple of in person piano lessons would have cost just as much. I can use the app whenever I want and practice as much as I want to (which is daily at the moment!) It has encouraged consistency in my daily routine and I’m finally happy to be able to feel more confident in reading sheet music again. The customer service has also been excellent, helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this app and will be re-subscribing for another year soon!

This app is good for beginners, adults, so on, but when I was on the first level, (intro) it kept making me press the c button so on, I found this a little annoying because it was like you where thinking I don't know how to press the keys, and the whole first level was just like that, it made me press c 3 times and d 3 times, now as somebody who has actual experience in piano I did not enjoy this. It felt like somebody was treating me as a special needs person, because they kept asking me to press c or d with just one finger, it felt as if they think I don't know how to press a key. I put in I have lots of experience on piano, and it still turned out like this. Obviously I was very disappointed at that point because the app wasn't as good as people say. Maybe the app is based on age? Im not sure at this point, and when you get past basics, it feels like the same thing. Overall this app disappointed me in multiple way, please change this 😕.
Thanks for reading this,
Hinata.

This is a great app to learn piano I only just got it and I can’t get away from it! There are so many great songs that you can play on there and you can even play some songs after you have learnt only a few notes! I have played on it for ten minutes and I can already play Bohemian Rhapsody(Shortened). It’s really really great and it’s given me something productive to do after school and other things instead of me going straight on my IPad and being lazy for the rest of the day. You learn so quick and it even gives you demo Videos which is really great because if you are confused you can refer back to the video. I recommend Simply Piano if you are struggling to learn. Thank you Simply Piano you really have boosted my piano skills already!

At the start you just get so happy that you can finally play piano! But then.. when you get so into it, like at the end its says play any song, like it says on the ads, but then you have to pay to play all the songs people love! At the start, the app is great and it really teaches you the first notes and it will teach beginners well, but every piano game that teaches you amazing songs, but then, at the end it’s just a let down, maybe some kids parents aren’t able to pay, or they just don’t want to, like me I’m unable to pay right now, and my piano teacher, at my school, has got COVID 19 and is unable to come in for a while, and all because of these lockdowns I am unable to go to out of school piano lessons, I know you don’t have to pay like every month, but it’s just for the people who can’t, I do understand why you have to pay for it because learning piano is a special thing, and simply piano is a very wonderful app, please don’t get annoyed at me for saying this, it’s just unfair for some people who can’t pay, and can’t go to piano lessons, I’m not actually this app is rubbish and its a really bad thing that you have to pay, because some people might think it’s OK, this is just me telling you my opinion about simply piano, but besides that, I think the app is terrific and can teach people piano really well :-). I hope you understand. :)

It works if you use it right..

Firstly I advise if you are committed to learning you have to use the right equipment, yes the app listens to you play so no direct connection is required but using the app this way will not give you the best results this is not the fault of the app but rather the technology it uses to listen to how you play. The only way to get the best out of this app or anything similar is to use a good piano that has Bluetooth built in, I have a Roland fp-30 with Bluetooth and the app works perfectly through this piano. I have been playing for about a month now and I the app in my opinion is fantastic and worth every penny to get the results you want. If you are truly dedicated to learning invest in a descent piano and an ipad and I would guarantee you will live the app. There is a support group on Facebook that the admins run and this is also very good everyone helps each other and everyone there is great. If you actually want to learn invest in decent equipment and download the app you won’t regret it.
Update, been playing six months now and I can now read music and to a point automatically playing and recognising music I hear, I would like to start using simply guitar it is a shame that there is no deal available as far as I am for using both apps.

What can I say. I’ve been trying to learn how to play for 14 years. I’m now playing on the 14 year old keyboard I’ve been dreaming of playing. I’m now playing with two hands and can read music. This app is more than worth the money. I’m on a free trial but will defo be signing up. I’ve even brought myself a upgrade. Thank you to the app developers. This is more than easy to follow and I’ve even got three profiles set up for my children to learn in which my 7 and 13 year olds have come on leaps and bounds and can now also read music thanks to this app. I don’t usually write reviews but this is more than worth five mins of my time. I’ve only had the app 5!days and before that I couldn’t even read music or play with two hands. Love this app the best of all time.

As a 60-something who had always wanted to play the piano, I decided to use lockdown to try to do just that. So I invested in a digital piano and Simply Piano. At first I thought the app was great, actually got me playing a few tunes but then the cracks started to show. There is a complete lack of theory - now what I want to do is play tunes, but you really do need some background to what you are doing. Secondly there is often a gap in the teaching. For example when moving on to hands in the e position, there is no instruction at all about how or when to combine c&e positions. But the thing I find most frustrating is the complete lack of flexibility in what you are playing. While each song has a practice section, I want to be able to choose to just play the top line, or just play the bottom line of the whole song but you can’t do that - if you try you just keep getting taken back to the start. Also I would like to be able to play a song though to the end, mistakes and all, and then go back to the beginning, not just be taken back a bar or two. Also if you get the timing wrong, it counts as a wrong note so you don’t know if you’ve hit the wrong note or just too soon or too late. It is just too inflexible, no customisation and I deep down don’t really think I’ve learnt anything. I’m in danger of not trying any more - the cover hasn’t come off my piano for a wee.

I LOVE IT 😻

Okay so i used to have this app and you used to have to pay if I can remember correctly. Then as an advert came up I said “I think I remember this App”. So I thought well I can’t remember what is wrong with this so I re-download it and then just as I was downloading I remembered what was wrong with it but I decided well let’s just see if it’s changed and it has changed you don’t have to have a subscription and it really helps with the keyboard I done a 10 minute workout and then a five minute workout in the end I was brilliant and I was trash in the beginning I love this app. I really recommend getting this app! 😃😄😁😆😀🤩🤪🥳😜😝😛😋. Now I’m going to go back on the app and practice some of my keyboard 🎹.

Serious problems prevent it from being great.

I have used this app nearly daily for 3 months now. It needs serious refinement.
- Do not believe that you can get away with using the audio recognition feature. It is simply not accurate enough and is infuriating when you hit the correct note and it doesn’t register. You NEED a MIDI keyboard and expensive adapter to connect it to your device.
- This app is good for the early beginner stages, where you progress quickly. It is terrible for intermediate stages and beyond. With trickier songs, they key to learning it is being able to practice a difficult section over and over again. This app makes this impossible, instead forcing you to use the slow and clunky rewind option, which makes repeating a tricky section laborious and impossible to learn.
- The app will regularly move you on to the next section even when you missed half the notes of the previous section, and then doesn’t let you go back to practice the previous section! I obviously am not ready to move on to the next section if I missed half the notes! Hopeless learning experience.

I learnt to read notes on a sheet instantly but not other stuff because of PREMIUM. I can’t learn songs because of PREMIUM. People cannot learn properly if you have to pay like £84 a year. A music school is too expensive for some people, so why not remove premium so that people can ACTUALLY LEARN, instead of just suppressing all of the features so people can pay money for most of the game. It’s like paying money for a whole game, might as well just make the app cost money.
IDEAS TO IMPROVE THE GAME:So instead of making people pay for an ENTIRE GAME, just put a small amount of ads for a reward. There should be coins to spend to unlock a lesson. To earn coins, you can practice songs. The harder the song, the more coins you get. The songs should be at your skill level and harder songs will be unlocked as you finish more lessons, until you get enough coins to unlock the last lesson. My mum won’t let me get premium and it’s not letting me learn more. A fortnight for a year? That can’t be real! The ads rewards should be either coins, gems or double coins for the day. The time for x2 coins can be stacked. A gem can be swapped for 500 coins.
I hope you(DEVELOPERS)see what I have written so that learning piano won’t be limited, and people wouldn’t have to spend £100+ on piano lessons.I would have rated this game 5* but the premium just ruins it.
From an annoyed 10 year old.

I have got this for my nearly 7 year old son for lockdown as he needed a change from being taught by me! He certainly finds it quite fun so far but frustrating that the microphone doesn’t always pick up the notes and penalises you unless your timing is perfect. Whilst clever there is no explanation of time signatures or lessons about tone and musicality it’s literally getting you to play the notes. Playing tunes with the back up tracks can be stressful as one little mistake and he has to start again. Another mistake and you have to play it really slowly which is actually REALLY hard for kids. Biggest annoyance is that despite advertising to the contrary there is no ability to pay monthly- after trial period it’s basically a choice between 6, 9, 12 months so a lot of money. I wouldn’t be doing it at all if it wasn’t for lockdown- for now my son is enjoying but we’ll be going back to the traditional way as soon as we can (if he also wants to continue with this then I don’t mind but it is expensive!).

It works for me.

I am 67, with no musical talent. A few years ago I tried to learn the piano using a different app, Piano Marvel, and weekly lessons with a teacher. I made a little progress, but after two months I gave up. I had spent a lot of time with the app and practising from sheet music, but my progress was very slow, and getting slower as I was given more difficult (but still elementary) pieces to play.
Then the lockdown was imposed so I restarted Piano Marvel, no private lessons of course. I soon remembered why I gave up Piano Marvel. My ear for music is not good enough for that app, I cannot identify and distinguish between chords, nor repeat a pattern of notes from memory. I am sure that to be a good pianist these are basic requirements, absolutely essential for progress to the higher levels. But I am not aiming to be a good pianist, I just want to be able play the piano confidently, read music, accompany songs and enjoy myself.
Simply Piano is great fun but challenging, and I love playing along with well known songs as I make progress. I am really glad I found it, since it has been a brilliant way to spend the lockdown.

Perfect for beginners (and so much cheaper than piano lessons!)

I can’t express how much I am enjoying this app. I have always wanted to be able to play the piano and after a couple of months on the app, I find that I can read and play (basic) sheet music! I am a complete beginner and have very little musical talent but have been so many times where I’ve said to myself, “Oh my god, look at me! I’m actually playing the piano.” The app is simple in design and the gamification of it means it’s a joy to play the piano.
In addition, the creators regularly add more songs to play and there are some great community challenges you can participate in. I’ve joined the Facebook group, which has provided me with lots of motivation to practise as well as given me a place to ask any questions I have.
There are some reviews on here complaining about the price, however, it is significantly cheaper than piano lessons would be. Others critique the lack of theory being taught. Simply piano is not for players who wish to become experts- there are better resources out there for those at more advance levels. However, if you are like me and you want to progress as a beginner to get to a point where you can play the piano for your own enjoyment, then this app is perfect for you.

This app is perfect if you just want to have a little fun while you learn a new skill. The star system and feedback on notes missed and timing issues mean you can really challenge yourself every time you sit down to play. I don’t think I’m ever going to be a concert pianist but that isn’t the point of this app. After 4 months of practise 3 or 4 times a week I can confidently play along with songs and I’m starting to confidently use sheet music. This is something I would never have achieved just learning from a book. It certainly works well through a midi connection to my IPhone but it also works without, though it isn’t as accurate.
I paid for the annual subscription and I’m really glad I did, I can history say I’m not getting bored of this, I suspect I’ll be renewing my subscription next year too.
Simply piano is the best decision I’ve made in a long while and has changed my life for the better.

I love the piano and have always wanted to learn how to play yet it has evaded me for 40 years. However, under Coronavirus lockdown, it was my intention to use this app as an introduction to piano for my children and despite their limited interest, I am hooked. It’s been just 10 days since I started and already I am playing along with much loved pop music tracks, hardly note perfect but the practice modes which break up and slow down the piece work well for me. Having covered the essentials I have unlocked a catalogue of pieces of music I can play along to, many of which have been simplified to suit my level of ability. This app is helping me to achieve a life long ambition and I can’t get enough of it, much to the dismay of my wife 😉 😂. Oh and I have not had any issues with the software identifying the notes which I play, if anything I am quite impressed with the accuracy.

Great learning experience

After 3 months of using this app every single day (even if it’s only for 5 minutes) I can really hear progress. The note recognition is pretty accurate, the music choices are varied, and the difficulty level ratchets up at just the right speed for me so that I keep improving without becoming disheartened. If I have a criticism it is that the scrolling music doesn’t let you look ahead more than three bars at a time, but then again that makes it a bit like sight reading practice. I should say that I played trumpet for years so I could read treble clef already, and I suppose that’s an advantage over a complete beginner. But I think that if anyone were to give this app some regular practice they will see startling progress.

Thought I’d write a review as I’ve read a fair few reviews complaining about issues such as note recognition, pricing etc.
I’ll grant that note recognition can be a little off at times, especially picking up a certain note within a chord, however I’d highly recommend you connect your keyboard to your device using a Midi connection which, for me at least, eliminated this issue.
If you look at this course as just an “app” then yes, it will seem expensive. However, if you look at it as I did (a step by step tuition on learning a musical instrument) then it is absolutely value for money.
There is a huge amount of content. Courses are well laid out and you have the ability to play songs at slower speeds if you choose in order to learn at an easier pace. Challenges and new songs are added frequently and there is a good, helpful community of over 120,000 users on social media.
A lot of time and thought has gone into this course and I think the price more than matches the effort the developers have put into it. A piano teacher would cost far more and I honestly don’t think I’d have advanced as I am or maintained my interest using one. This is a fun method of learning. And you DO learn.
Thank you for reading.

So this app could work for you but for me and my brother it made it more difficult.
We did everything it asked and the microphone was on and everything! It kept on saying that we where playing the wrong notes when it clearly tells you on the practice of the notes it was correct yet when we played it to the music ( and the right timing) it was incorrect so we got our older sister to come and play this song ( because she has performed it at school ) she played it perfectly yet it said she didn’t . So me and my brother started an experiment one of us ( me ) used a book on music to learn piano while the other used the app . 4 weeks went by and I learned so much from the book but on the other hand my brother struggled learning so we even asked our dad to learn with him on simply piano and even he was struggling ! 5 weeks into learning I could play so many songs and knew so much about the keys I needed to use on a piece of music but my brother has to get stickers to go on the keys so he knew which ones are which . I performed some of the songs at school to my howl school and they loved it but my brother was still learning how to play simple songs like amazing grace . But he finally got 2 songs out of it and he was happy but he told me not to say it’s good because it took him 6 weeks to learn 2 song . So if you wanna download this I’m not stopping you but remember there is always books of music to learn from too !

I went on to it, thinking I could learn some songs I’d wanted to play. It said by the end of the course I would get to play perfect, by Ed Sheeran. First it showed me the first five notes. I’m already on grade 1 piano so it was easy, but I played it anyway, so I could get to the actual songs. When I finally got to the song it told me I had to pay £6.99 a month just to play that song! AND when I was doing the basic five finger exercises it kept telling me I was playing it wrong when I clearly wasn’t. This app is FAR to expensive and very awful, as it tells you you get it all wrong when it’s obvious you don’t. Try the app if you like but if you aren’t prepared to pay lots of money you are wasting your time.

Simply piano is a great app for picking up the basics of piano. I’ve been using the app for about 2 months now and honestly you won’t regret BUT there is some major downfalls. One big downfall would be the tech behind the app simply miss registering notes 95% of the time. As fun as the app is it drives you up the wall. I also find the best part about this app is the BETA sheet music which is available on the iPad. A library full of different types of music that cater to everyone’s needs I get a lot more use out of this than having to sit and frustratingly learn pieces that I don’t have any wish to learn without the annoying notes being missed by the app. My only nag is that I’d love for the library to be updates even more regularly with new music as it can get a little boring at times. Another downfall is key signatures don’t seem to be a thing in this app as of yet?? Hopefully the deeper in I get income across them. Again all that aside all in all the app is great and I do recommend it just needs some work.

This app has been great for my kids who are enjoying learning piano and progressing well. However, our enjoyment is spoiled by a couple of things. Most importantly, when I signed up in the first place, I was prompted to upgrade to a “family membership”, for an extra £60-odd on top of the £80-odd cost of the normal yearly rate. I decided to agree to that so we could have individual learning journeys. However, the app took the money for BOTH subscriptions, even though I clearly only needed the family one and had been promoted by the app itself to sign up for this. I’ve contacted both JoyTunes and Apple repeatedly to try to get a refund for the cheaper of the two as it was so clearly a mistaken purchase - and one I entered into entirely in error and because of the misleading prompting by the app- but I have received no response or refund. Considering this is a very expensive app and a significant commitment by a customer, I am very disappointed and in fact quite shocked by the way I’ve been treated. Buyer beware.

Have to pay too soon

I’ve been wanting to learn piano for a while but wasn’t convinced I would want to stick with it. When I saw the description said there was an onscreen keyboard I decided to give the app a go as I wouldn’t be paying to buy a piano. However after about 10 minutes of playing it told me that to do more I needed my own piano/keyboard which was annoying. I then found out I have a very small keyboard at home so started using that but then after about 20 minutes of that it told me I couldn’t start the next lesson until I payed for a subscription. I understand that they want to make money but I don’t yet know if I want to even play the piano or if this app will work for me. I had previously used Yousician to learn guitar and I found that better as you got free 10 mins a day so I knew I liked the app before having to pay. It would be better is this app was similar because I am unable to make progress without committing for longer than I want to. If you are happy to pay then I am sure this app is great but if not then I wouldn’t recommend it.

We brought this for our 6 yr old daughter. We have paid for the yearly subscription, yes at first I did think it was a bit pricey but private lessons would cost a lot more. The deal is if she is still sticking to it after a year then we will get her one to one lessons. She does 30mins 3 times a week at least. Within 1 week she is learnt to read the music sheet. It’s fantastic.
However the only gripe I have is that I wish there we more “nursery” songs for children to learn like twinkle twinkle, row row your boat etc. And also to have to letter of the key they should be playing not just the number of the finger as this is what she tends to remember not that it is E she says 3.
Other than that she is doing really well and enjoying it. With what she has taken in in 3 weeks I can’t wait to see how much she learns.

It’s good but needs fixing

Growing up I never really was interested in playing instruments, but using this app has really made me motivated to playing the piano and also perform in front of other people too after playing the BETA. Without a doubt one of the most worthwhile apps I’ve used on my iPad. However, one complaint I do have with this app is, when I go to play a song whether it be the BETA or the courses, after I finish the song, it completely crashes and takes me back to the menu screen. This happens 90% of the time. In the BETA this is even more gutting since, it doesn’t tell you how you did before it crashes so you do all that work for pretty much nothing. Please fix this so I can continue to play these songs without this happening.

I had this app on phone for a while and decided on seeing 20% discount offer at £66 and as start of summer holidays to purchase premium access for my kids. However in trying to add second profile it said I’d have to pay £100! WHAT? It said I could add 5 profiles in info. On further examination I saw in subscriptions my ‘discount’ offer was for a subscription where you can’t do this though at no time during purchase was this made clear. There is however a ‘family’ sub that allows this! I hadn’t used app at all and went to apple web site within 1 hour to request refund but was unable to. I then contacted apple on chat, explained the obfuscation and that I had removed app from all devices instantly and not used it and secured a refund. I have since contacted developer and explained my woes and may reconsider when the pricing is clarified on the App Store. “Start with the customer and work back”

The app is good for beginners and family usage, the lessons are presented in an easy to interpret format and it has good recognition when using a cable. It is also very cheap.
Most piano lessons cost £20 an hour give or take £10, this costs less than that per month. And if you’re complaining about price, developers need to put food on the table too, making high quality apps is expensive.
However there are a lot of downsides that hold it back. The correct finger usage can be unintuitive and the app will likely alienate intermediate pianist or most pianists with a year of experience. The app completely skips everything that isn’t playing, such as counting or methods to improve sight reading like the landmark system. Most pieces have been transposed to different keys, which means after learning everything the app has to offer, you will have to relearn most of it in the right key.
In conclusion, you will be much better off with an actual teacher who will iron out the mistakes the app can’t.

Great app..... if it didn't constantly crash

Bought this app a few weeks ago. I tried it for a week then bought the full version. The app itself is really good. I like how you progress in small stages and I like the two tier system of chords and melody....... however! The app is becoming almost unusable. Every time I go to repeat a song the thing crashes. The screen starts to flicker and I have to restart the ipad to clear the error. This is the only app that does it. The trial version did it a couple of times But not to the extent that the full version does, or so it seems. I got to the point where I decided to ask for a refund but got a message from Apple saying that I did not meet the terms and requirements for a refund. This thing cost me 80 odd quid and it doesn't work. I would be VERY weary about purchasing anything else for such a price. I can stand to lose a few quid but not this amount. Seems like I am going to have to fight Apple for a refund now which I really could do without. Maybe Watchdog might be interested...

Forget about piano teachers

Honestly, If you don’t need someone to hold your hand for you to practice and you are a self motivated person this is simply perfect. If I was a piano teacher I would be terrified what this app can do for my job. I have never thought learning sheet music would come so easily and being able to practice through popular songs from Beethoven to Taylor Swift to Greatest Showman and so many more is extremely motivating. Apart from how amazing the content and teaching methods are even the graphics are just perfection. It’s cartoony in a way that doesn’t feel childish at all. I’ve read some negative comments about app not being able to properly recognize notes that are played on the piano, just increase your instrument’s volume and decrease your phone/tablet’s volume and you’ll be fine. Seriously five stars are not enough for this app.

This app is incredible. The cost spreading availability let’s it down.

I’ve been using simply piano pro for a week and excelled through the courses to essentials 2, but I didn’t have enough money in my bank to cover the cost of the courses once my free trials over. I’m really sad about this as I don’t get paid until the 20th and I really don’t want to lose any skill from not being able to practise. Is there anyway we can come to an arrangement, this is quite honestly the best app I’ve ever used for music. I’ve gone from not being able to play piano to being able to read sheet music in a week. What you’ve created here is exceptional and has the ability to teach anybody. I know it’s a lot to ask but it would mean so much to me if we could come to an arrangement. Please get in touch, I would hate to not be able to practise for nearly a month.

Good app yet...

So i got simply piano! I was thinking how amazing i could be on my keyboard and i could show my friends, i started right away and i learned how to fluently play C,D,E,F,G i played a couple songs and did the singing songs it gave me. After the first chapter i thought, what a great app im learning sooo much better now! I clicked on the video part of the last section on the tutorial bit and then came the constant push to pay. I looked at the prices and for one month it was £7! I know they have the new year deal of £5 but for me this is way too much! Why? Because my mum won’t let me she already bought me an expensive keyboard (which sadly only has two octaves) and i have to pay to learn more! I even offered to pay half but still no!
I have a suggestion make most learning parts free but without having the songs, for people like me who can’t spend much, this would be great! I hope you understand my situation, if you could could you give me a response! Thank you so much and i wish you a good year!

Great app, however...

(App developer please read to the end)
The app has been instrumental in getting child to practice more. She started learning to play the piano earlier this year and she became rather good at it quickly but after a while she became bored with and it was a struggle to get her to practice even for 10 minutes. Piano became fun when we discovered this app and she easily goes for up to an hour before I drag her away from the piano! The result is that her piano has improved a lot (according to her teacher) and she now enjoys it. This is great however there is a problem in that the app only allows my login on my app. I try logging into my wife’s iPad so she could use the app on there but it wasn’t possible. I’ll be travelling for a few days and I want her to be able to continue where she left off on her moms ipad. Is it possible to login on a separate iPad? I’ve got a 3 month subscription and it will be a waste if it can only be used on a single device!

Excellent learning tool

So I learned how to play the piano very basically when I was at school. I’ve always had a musical ear and picked up reading sheet music particularly easy.
These skills have been found again with the use of this app. Genuinely so easy to use and fun. This app helps you enjoy playing the piano while actually learning a thing or two.
There is a small issue with the microphone not always recognising the sound as I’ve seen in other reviews. Also the practice mode would be great to be able to turn off completely. As a person who sorta knows a thing or two practice mode of me isn’t necessarily required at my level and therefore would be great if you could stop it popping up every couple of times “notes are being missed” due to the mic not recognising them.

Disappointing payment plan

My 6&8 yr old boys have a keyboard that they have played with on and off for a year but my eldest (8yr old) really wanted to learn how to play properly and read sheet music so I installed simply piano. I found that he progressed very quickly and spent hours in his room on the keyboard with simply piano and then the free trial ran out and this is where it got very disappointing... the payment plans are ridiculous! I’m a single mum of 2 and can not afford to had over that lump sum of money in one go! If it says monthly then it should be charged monthly. Sadly due to this I have had to tell my son I can’t afford to pay for it and therefor have to delete it to which we are both very disappointed. If it wasn’t for the ridiculous payment plans I would give this app 5 stars without a thought but the payment plan left me frustrated so it gets 3 stars. PLEASE SORT OUT A MONTHLY PAYMENT PLAN THAT IS TAKEN MONTHLY.

Good but one issue

When I finish the Beethoven song, it always says 2/3 it really annoys me because I feel excited that I’ve completed the whole course , it’s just that one that doesn’t want to let me pass and I’m only on 92% of the way to finish when I have passed the Beethoven song on the piano basics I’ve tried to do the song several more times but still the same result, when I finish I have to go through all of the start of the Beethoven basics/beginning again which wastes my time doing it again and again , my Yamaha disklavier is loud so I don’t think it’s anything to do with the sound! Please don’t take this as a hate review I really love the game very much it’s just I have that issue and would like to start the songs, I already can play piano I just use this as a little bit more help and it has helped and I want to move on from the basics just to challenge myself as I am on grade 5
Thanks, please reply and tell me what I could do if you read this

By the way I have tried the app out on different pianos in my piano shop and I would recommend one Yamaha, bluthner and kawai as they got the best result although there
is other ones that work but they had the best results!
I really do not want to pay for the premium membership as I have to save up my money, please can you give me a different solution :)

Absolutely superb

I’m so impressed by this piece of software, I’ve tried learning the piano a number of times on my own and always found trying to say enthusiastic really hard. By contrast I’ve been using this for a month now and I’m already years ahead of my previous attempts. The way it builds up the steps needed to play each song, and the way it gradually increases the number of notes and positions is very cleverly done. I do highly recommend users buy a midi compatible piano/keyboard and suitable iPad adaptor, my pianos a good 10 years old and the iPad USB 3 adaptor works great with it. The midi interface drastically improved my experience and means every note I play is now recognised, allowing me to aim for 3 stars in the songs section without the frustration of it missing notes I did actually play. However, the mic listening feature is definitely great as a starting point, without it I wouldn’t have been pulled in by such a great app.

I’m enjoying the app BUT...

I’m enjoying using this app and use it every morning as part of my daily routine. The progress is is good in that I feel challenged but never overwhelmed, lessons are presented in a simple and intuitive manner to make sessions productive and fun.
My main complaint however is that the microphone often struggles to hear when I’m playing correctly, particularly in lessons requiring 4 or more notes to be played simultaneously. I’ve turned up my piano and turned down the app but still find myself repeating sections I’ve actually managed correctly because the app didn’t pick up what was being played.
I have subscribed to the service as I do feel for now that it’s a well designed course and useful to me as a newcomer to this instrument. I’m just really hoping that a future update will be able to rectify this issue sooner rather than later.
So recommended app though be prepared for a little frustration along the way.
