Version 1.3.8
What can I say, a true to life port of a game that was hugely important in my young life. After playing CP2077 and then playing this, it’s obvious that you don’t need a next generation console, a gaming rig or £1000s to enjoy a game that will take you in a journey. It’s as good now (if not better) than it was, best of all no 10 minute loading from tape and being able to play anytime, anyplace. I’ve put in on my iphone and iPad and believe it will also play on my M1 Mac mini. My life is now complete.
The wife is suitably unimpressed. Kevin Tom may be named in the forthcoming divorce lol.
Seriously, if you’re looking at this game it’s probably because in your distant, pre mortgage and kids life, you played this on the Spectrum, Atari 800xl, C64 , CPC, BBC Micro or similar and are wondering if it is as good as you remember? Yes it is and best of all the price isn’t that bad (recall it being £2.99 back in the 80s). Anyway, just buy it. Spend 10 minutes going “yeah it’s ok “, then an hour thinking “this is good”, then give up sleep, relationships, food etc as it slowly takes over your life.
Thank you Kevin for ruining my life. “COYI”. :)

No football game you play right now would exist without this. This was the catalyst. The first immersive game on a computer ever. If you think the current Football Manager game is detailed and comprehensive, there is only one reason. Kevin Toms. We had to make all that tactical stuff up in our heads. We had to imagine, but Kevin Toms gave us the platform upon which to use our imaginations. And he gave us every management simulation you play today. Everything.

A fantastic modern day version of an 80’s classic ZX Spectrum game. Takes me back to when I was a kid. So much better than football games today where it takes you months to get through a season. This is a perfect pick up and play even when only got 5 mins, play a few games and then continue where you left off later 😊

This took me back to simpler times when gameplay was king and many hours of my youth played Football Manager on the ZX Spectrum. The original is still King, easy to play, quick to play and fun. Perfect for those on the go. Only problem is my management skills and seeing West Ham lose to Crewe. Great purchase for the price.

If you like football then this game is for you. If you ever wanted to take a club from the lows of the 4th division to the dizzy heights of the premier league then away you go. This game makes the running of a football club to its simplest form making it very enjoyable to play, even for a novice. Play your way through a whole season, including cup matches, at your pace. This game is playable anywhere and anytime, a true legend among football games.

My favourite ever Spectrum game is now on my iPad !!! I love it.
It looks exactly like it did all those years ago, had a few tweaks but essentially looks and feels the same, but no more waiting and hoping my cassette would load it after 10 minutes! There are so many football manager games, with needless graphics, and far too much going on, we don’t need that, and they cost a fortune. This is what I want! I can change the players names, and Charlton Athletic actually win things. 🤣
Multiple difficulty levels.

Played this to death when it came out and loved. Even wrote the fella a letter and he replied to envy of my friends.
Almost 36 years later the fun is still there. If you compare it to an Xbox game then you don’t really get it. Enjoy the simplicity of a more simple time except now you can play with the benefit of nearly 40 years more football knowledge. And yes, I’m still rubbish at it 👍

I was looking for a football manager game for my phone and couldn’t believe my luck when I stumbled across this absolute classic. It’s exactly how I remembered it. customising my team, Buying and selling players to improve the squad, keeping a close eye on those fitness levels. And with varying difficulty levels it’s certainly a challenge for all skill levels and for all ages. Perfect if you’re sat at home or out and about and with the save feature you always pick up where you left off. Brilliant! Thank you Kevin Toms.

Many, many, many hours spent taking Liverpool from the depths of the lowest league to the dizzying heights of European success. Look, this game will not win awards for its appearance (it is a ZX Spectrum game for chrissakes) but it is playable as hell and still fun to play, for less than the cost of a Flat White.....without any more in game ads or crap like that. If you lost days to it on your old home computer, you are just as likely to do the same. If - like some of these reviews - you are expecting something like a FIFA franchise then watch and learn.

Very excited to see this as bought back great memories of my teens playing into the early hours on my spectrum.

This is the game that started it all...the true game that put us in charge of our favourite clubs so they could be run how we know it all’s believe it should be... this legend has been slightly updated by the true legend himself Kevin Toms. I have been waiting for a lifetime to once again get that fun back that this game once gave me on my rubber keyed ZX 28k Spectrum. This game had me hooked back then from the first match as my team under my new leadership thrashed Mansfield 5-0. To be able to be taken back to them memories by Mr Toms is priceless. I like that past and present players are now in the mix. You can buy any player as long as you have the money. You get generous loans to do so too. No more boring in-depth analysing which player to go for and then finding you out he don’t wanna play for you. Just simple skilled players 1-5, no training, no bigger clubs taking your best players... in fact no headaches or heartbreaks, just total addictive fun...remember when football was once actually fun? You can go through an entire season of league, FA cup and European football in less than 30 mins. You can even test yourself with skill levels 1-7 that will suit any demands. This is quiet simply a very straightforward, enjoying, pleasurable game that is 100%...10/10...pure gold!!! Thank you Kevin Toms

I'm 47 now and remember me and a friend racing home from school so that we could get our daily fix of football manager crowded around his 48k spectrum in his tiny bedroom back in the early 80's. Like the previous review says, it's a great game that brings back many fond memories listening to that damn tape loading, only to get the game working and then the stupid little wire to come out of the back of the speccy and turning it off lol.....The only reason I didn't give it a 5* is the fact that I loved watching the highlights, and also being able to change players names. Otherwise it's great, and I hope there will be future updates...Kevin Toms...you are a legend !!!
I have started on level 5 as I didn't want it to be too easy....I've found level 5 quite challenging....I'm in 7th after 10 games :)
One bug I have noticed in my first season is that my goalkeeper has scored about 3 times in my opening 10 games.
Another thing I love about this game is that it's not complicated compared to the modern football manager games. With the modern games you have the training, sponsors, expanding your ground etc etc etc to think about. I grew up with this game, and maybe it's my age, but I can't get to grips with the manager games these days. I have purchased some extras and hope that this game will get further updates. Thumbs up from me.

Fantastic (if you’re of a certain age!)

My strikers can’t shoot, my defenders can’t tackle, most of my midfield is injured and I just got hammered by Darlington....but I’m confident I can turn it around.!
Great effort Kevin, this game brought a smile to my face and is a real blast from the past, so thank you.
I also think you made the right decision to try and be as true to the original as possible, despite some of the comments on here.
Next step (hoping an Eidos developer sees this)....I’d pay through the nose for an iOS version of Champ Manager Italia 😉

I played the original.48k spectrum version of Football Manager and so this is a great fix. Just a couple of issues:
1. Keep getting big black squares where I assume there should be some sort of graphic. (iPhone XS)
2. Please can we have the original 8 bit blocky all caps fonts?
3. Could we see a modern version with similar gameplay but with updated graphics etc? Other FM games are too complex. This is great for a quick fix.
Thanks Kevin!

What a legend you are Mr Toms. This brought it all back. Even Mick Mills is there and still a bit rubbish. The game runs really well on the iPhone.
Maybe Jeff Minter could be persuaded next to convert some classics to the iPhone. Or maybe Valhalla could be released. Or Skool Daze! The possibilities of 8 bit classics is endless.
Thank you for an excellent game which took me back to my misspent youth!

No loading times.
Results and league tables load pretty much immediately
Funtastic new hi definition match highlights available in addition to the (slightly slicker) original retro style match highlights.
A quick and easy to use transfer and choose team interface.
And he’s only gone and added the European cup as a free extra!!
A triumph! Thanks for all the good times then and again now Mr Toms. Money well spent.

Hi Kev
This is my first and perhaps most likely only review of KTF⭐️M, well ...Firstly i would like to give it ten stars but Apple only lets me give it only five stars! 😉 As before, just wanna' say many thanks for re-recreating this true masterpiece of a computer game which - like many other people have said, takes me back to the 80s. Having played hundreds of seasons already now, there is not a single flaw the game lacks ....only that a cassette is not required these days for this version! 😀 Besides that, would love to see a World Cup version created perhaps? Kev, (as it's World Cup year) and as the one you created for the 1990 World Cup way back then...
Anyways, keep up the good work and wish you the best of luck on this amazing revitalised adventure! ❤️👍🏼🙂

I’ve had the game about a week and it’s been great fun see my team start from Division 4 and climb to top division and lift European cup and other cup along the way.
But when you reach top division l, I found the game started to lose appeal.
Also, while I accept the game on iPhone is to replicate the original. It has also exposed the flaws of the original and I would hope improvements are made.
Eg you can still win a game without a goalkeeper (unrealistic). You can still have much higher stats than an opponent but still get hammered.
It glitches occasionally. It also has the iPhone camera flash up in bottom right hand corner of screen for no apparent reason.
It could do with a timer while showing highlights. Also corners and pens would enhance viewing experience. And maybe a half time chance to make subs.
It doesn’t tell you which round of cup you are through too.
You can run out of money but still carry on playing, making losses each week but not getting into debt.
Edit : thanks for the response Kevin. I didn’t mean to be too critical. I think it’s a great game. I was merely trying to offer suggestions where I felt the game would benefit.
I would be interested if you made a companion app -which had more features and improvements. While I commend u for staying true to the original, I can’t help but feel (just like the game itself as moved on in the subsequent 35 years), that an enhancement here or there wouldn’t go amiss.

I can remember my brother getting a ZX Spectrum in 1982 when they first came out and watching him hog it whilst he played the original Football Manager. I was a pipsqueak, jealous as hell and he NEVER let me have a go. A year later, I got his cast off and that was it, hooked. I’ve been playing footy manager type games ever since and it’s amazing how addictive such a simplistic game can be over the more detailed realism over the likes of CM and FM. I find myself playing this on trains, on the bog, in bus stops, you name it. It’s quick, accessible and furiously addictive. It doesn’t hide from its roots and the legend Kevin Toms has clearly tried to reproduce the glorious original with no added extras. My only grip - although I can switch the sound off, I wish I could listen to my tunes at the same time as playing for longer journeys. Aside from that, hats off to Kevin and the best phone based football sim out there!

Needs heavily updating and expanding

I loved the original game, played it for hours! And this version is very close to the original, however things have moved on a tad since then.
I know this is obviously a work in progress and I'm sure better updates will come, but charging £3 for this is a bit overpriced I feel. Needs to have a lot more depth in the game to compete with other manager apps out there. We aren't running on 48k anymore!
After reading your reply and some other users feedback, how about giving some thought to having 2 versions then? Have the original for the people that want that and maybe a more in depth manger game for those that like the whole building the stadium and controlling everything, etc...

I remember spending many hours in the 80's playing the original FM game on the acorn electron. This remake is just as good. I was initially a little underwhelmed by the interface, I guess I had expected it to be slightly more iphoneified, but I can completely see why Kevin has kept it as close to the original as possible and after an hour or two playing it the interface really isn't a problem. Perhaps the text could be a bit bigger, my eyes have aged several decades since my first addiction to this game. A great game and you don't have to listen to a tape deck screeching at you for 15 minutes before playing it, or type page=3584 *tape *run.

Just as good as Kevin's original.

I purchased the badge logo uploader too for my team "AFC Wimbledon" for completeness. Yup, just as fun as when I first played it on my mates Acorn Electron text-only version all those seasons ago (better actually) before I purchased it on the more limited C16 and then the excellent C64 version.
Looking forward to the graphical highlight option update, and any other future ones whilst keeping the tradition of simplicity. Forget the bloated EA versions, I also prefer this to Top Eleven. Less in-app purchases designed to steal your cash the better too.
Some people may complain about using players and a league system from the 1980's before the premier league. But that's the whole point. It's purposely designed to be a faithful recreation of the original for those who remember those days, and the original game. It just wouldn't feel the same otherwise. Simple is often better.
All in all a very good price for a well implemented classic for ios from the original author.

Not for me I'm afraid

Love the idea of trying to capture the magic of early computer games - and the text based footy manager games had the magic, but this just needs a little bit more effort for me. Just spent 3 quid and feel a bit let down to be honest. Update: I'm not let down by the gameplay as I was one of the teenagers playing the original for many hours. It was more the user interface. It's not intuitive and doesn't use any of the native iOS controls that are given to you in Xcode/swift. It could retain the simplicity and text-based nostalgia but use the intuitive and recognisable native iOS controls to make it so much easier to use (tab and nav bars, swipe and rotating pickers etc) . That's just my view I guess!

Doesn't seem to be an option to select tactics etc. All you get to do is pick your team from your squad then the game decides on your score. If you are not happy with the score you can't change tactics or make a sub. Also the interface is very basic. Just text. EDIT: Received follow up message from developer advising this is a remake of the original game, and on the strength of that I have reviewed my rating as it does mirror that game despite the lack of features but I personally will be looking for something else.

I remember walking into my local video games store back in the early 80s, and picking up what I believe was the first ever Football Manager game... honestly don't think I left the house for the next six months... the software house was aptly named Addictive!!! Spin forward 30 odd years, and here I am playing the same game on my iPhone and iPad. The game itself still retains all the charm of the original without the slow loading speeds and inevitable crashes... and whatsmore I can now leave the house and still play the game (I might get little work done tho). Like the idea that a whole new generation , as I did, will be playing the original football
Manager game.
