Tablet Edition is extremely clunky

First off I want to say Darkest Dungeon is a fantastic game. Everything from the atmosphere to story, voice acting is astounding.
That being said “Tablet Edition” is a very clunky port, definitely unpolished with finicky touch controls and curiously enough I’ve had a menu screen crash within 2 hours of playing despite quite a few years of bug fixes.
I would say it deserves 3 stars as it is playable however I feel that the developer has metaphorically spat in the face of loyal fans by grossly overcharging for the lack of quality of this port.
I will not be buying the DLC at these prices either, wait for sale I guess as I doubt Red Hook Studios will lower their prices to fit this iffy port. Poor business practices.

Version 1.0.2
Was a little concerned by the reviews which said there were issues with the game on tablet but thought I’d try it anyway as no one seemed to have raised any further issues in a year.
Not sure why they haven’t, it’s still a mess.
Other bugs aside, the save’s don’t save. In a game which is designed for several runs before completion the saves simply delete, leaving you back where you started. An unforgivable, unplayable technical mess.
Know developers sometimes read these. If you are I don’t want an apology, I want a refund.

First things first - this is a brilliantly absorbing game, and I love it. It’s just the right level of challenging, with a beautiful art style.
Pity then that a lot of the interface doesn’t work on mobile - trying to hover on a debuff (circa 2mm tall on my iPad) in order to actually be able to read it is only achievable if you’re using a very pointy stylus. It’s a common thing in mobile ports, but it’s especially frustrating here.
Mostly however, I’m only giving this 3 stars because I have to shut down and reopen the app every time I try to load a new level. Whatever fix the last patch applied, it doesn’t seem to have worked.

Not played for long and so far have had 3 crashes that caused me to lose progress. It’s a fantastic game that would be amazing if the devs spent some more time on doing a decent port.

I own that game on PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and now on iPad. That game is never boring. I have read some reviews about poor UI, but I must disagree with that. I find every version of Darkest Dungeon fun and easy to use. And you cannot go wrong with that price 😅

I’ve wrote this review to help the app rating there’s some reviews giving one stars just because the app didn’t work on ios14 this has been resolved and the game does deserve a better score then what it’s currently got in my opinion this is one of the best games out there and it’s nice to have on the iPad

Previous review:
It’s a shame really, as the iPad was easily my favourite way to play this game, despite the port not being perfect. But it just doesn’t work, and there doesn’t even seem to be a way to get to your save file and transfer it to PC.
Kinda terrible that there isn’t even a warning of this on the store page about this too.

The latest IOS (IOS 14) update has resulted in me being unable to start the game. I get the splash screen before being thrown back to the desktop. Edit 2020: currently this game crashes instantly when launching . Great game, needs to be fixed
Very difficult but rewarding game, that takes time to learn, but has a lot of depth.
This iPad version has all the features of the original, which means it is one of the best games available on the App Store.
It would be great if some areas of the ui could be tweaked to use more of the screen, and suit touch use. Selling and dropping items is too fiddly at the moment, and skill selection in combat would be good to be in the far bottom left of the UI so two hands could be used while holding the device.
Ultimately minor gripes for a great game

Very boring. You have fun for like 3 days but then that’s it. There are some things that I like, for instance characters dying for good and new ones coming in. However the exploration is boring and could be more entertaining and less repetitive.

I have played this game previously on other platforms. Got this for iPad and is full of bugs. Perhaps the best indie game I’ve played. Ambience, narration and script are actually top tier even compared with AAA games. The developers are clearly huge Lovecraft fans, and unlike most Lovecraft games, the writing actually matches his style.
The gameplay mechanics are deep, and reward planning and thoughtful play. Risk assessment and mitigation are key.

Perfect for a tablet

 –

 –
2020-01-09
Firstly the game its self is quite deep and tactical. Especially the farther you get into it. It’s very atmospheric too.
Secondly the graphics are very good for a tablet and the game runs well.
Lastly as a Gypsy myself I can wholeheartedly say to the developer that you can call us Gypsies it’s not racist and definitely not offensive. So please call the nomad by her proper name.

What’s the point of making this available for the iPad Pro 12.9 2018 if it doesn’t even use half the screen?
The UI hasn’t been updated for touch screens either so it’s pretty much the same game that’s on PC.
This is clearly a cash grab by the dev.

A bad adaptation of an excellent game

 –
momerathe
 –
2018-10-14
This is a good game, the problem is that it needs a *lot* more work to adapt the UI to a touch interface. Many times if accidentally activated something when all I wanted to do was "hover" over it. In a game as unforgiving as this, that could be the difference between success and failure.
Furthermore, text input with non-standard keyboards mashes the game unplayable, and I have to force quit and start again.

Thanks to Darkest Dungeon, my 8 year old son has the vocabulary of a 40 year old!
Examples:
You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial. Gazing proudly from its stoic perch above the moor.
Monstrous size has no intrinsic merit, unless inordinate exsanguination be considered a virtue.
This man understands that adversity and existence are one and the same.

Crashes on iPad 2017, usually when doing something with the glossary, or other menu items (even looking at DLC, worryingly for the devs).
Also, there’s a steep learning curve here, and little instruction, but worth the effort in the end.

I didn’t like this too much on pc, I just found it to grow stale quite quickly. On iPad though, you can pick this up at any time and have a very satisfying 10 minute session, which feels surprisingly deep. It makes so much sense on this platform, especially considering it’s a lot cheaper and portable.
I will be buying the DLC once I have completed the main campaign.

Watch your characters die constantly TIL you learn how to play! Keep your torch up full if you want to win battles! Even if you succeed a dungeon they’ll be screwed up and you have to put them away until they’re cured so you have to start with raw recruits again! Ok but frustrating! Oh and nearly every treasure you find is some sort of trap and a character who is near death refuses to be healed and dies! One of those games that punishes you for playing it! I’m just glad I got it on sale! You need some positive aspects to keep playing! There are none here!

This is a great game that’s been slightly ruined by the interface that’s come across from the PC version.
They really need to redo the interface for the iPad\iPad Pro as currently it doesn’t make full use of the screen and a lot of the elements are too small to read\tap comfortably.
If they put out an update to address this issue there would be very little to criticise about the game. Fingers crossed.

Firstly, this is a fantastic game. The low review is based on one thing only
If I wasn’t so familiar with the PC version, this would be annoying as hell to play. It’s all too tiny. The ported resolution seems lazy and there’s no way to increase it... not really optimised for iPad. So yes, fantastic game, get it! But maybe get it on PC. That said, if tiny fonts and hard to see icons don’t bother you, this one of the best games ever made.

By far one of the best games in recent years. Learn to treat your heroes as expendable cannon fodder until the prove themselves.

I love this game. So much depth learning how the characters work best and how to team them up against a large variety of enemies all with their own attributes. Planning ahead and keeping your characters sane and alive takes considered management. I play this mostly on Nintendo Switch but for 99p how could I refuse on my iPad mini as well. Put your reading glasses on and you will be fine with the compact interface. It’s the same on the Switch and is perfectly legible once you know what everything does.

Outstanding game. Has a bit of a learning curve but is very addictive when you get the hang on it.
I hope there will be a chance to play the Crimson Court material on iOS.
For the devs I would make one tiny suggestion : put some kind of visual clue that the game is preparing a level before the player sees that he/she can start the level. As things stand there is an awkwardly long time when the game is in effect frozen.

After the update I’ve decided to amend my review. My original complaint that saves were being overwritten seems to have been fixed in the update addressing iCloud syncing - this is great!
This is a brilliant dungeon crawling game that will have you on the edge of your seat as your party is slowly driven made by the horrors they are forced to endure when you send them into nightmarish locations. There is a sharp initial learning curve, however I feel that after an hour or two of gameplay and a few restarts you’ll get a good feel for the game and it’ll become much, much easier.
My only complaint now is that the UI doesn’t seem to have been optimised for tablet in the slightest. Seems to be a rather lazy port indeed.

Darkest Dungeon is a fantastic game for a tablet and possible a game most worth its price on the app store.
There is a minor complaint that prevents me from 5 staring it and its the touch controls. Being ported from pc, some buttons are too small to tap accurately and the game could use a confirmation pop up for items, because I find myself frequently using an item when I only wanted to read the descriptions. And scrolling through the roster is difficult because you have to tap a tiny arrow.
Otherwise easily one of my favourite games on a tablet.
