Version 2.2.5
For a card strategy game its amazing!
Easy to play, and understand, difficult to master!
The RNG is balanced when building your deck, and even when you fail you just want to instantly try again!
And even when you think you’ve completed it, there’s more, an alternative ending? Master ascendancies making each run more and more difficult!

Basically luck, little skill

Version 2.2.2
1) If you own the game already on iOS why would you get the Apple Arcade version?
2) Given point 1, why do we need a big flashing “syncing data” throughout our runs in the top right corner?
3)Why after each card play do we need an even larger animated “syncing data” overlay?
4)Why is there no option to turn this unnecessary update feature off?
The game is now completely unplayable. Nice one.

Game breaking bugs are showing up.

I recently had an invisible heart. Now I’m clicking end turn and nothing is happening.
Game used to be great because you didn’t need an internet connection and now it insists on it.
One star unless and until it’s fixed.
This was fine for years, you’ve broken it.

Great game but the text is tiny on a iPhone 13 mini

Version 2.0.10
As expected, the text is tiny in the iPhone 13 mini, however I’m not sure why there isn’t a text size option. Also, when try to tab out of the game by dragging the bottom of the screen, it can be a tad fiddly, and you may play some cards you didn’t mean to play by mistake. On the plus side, I do like how the game saves during each part of a run, so no need to do a run in one sitting, as sometimes the app resets itself, so this would have been incredibly frustrating if it didn’t have a save feature.

Hey - you guys have tried your game on an iPhone, right? You did notice that you can't read the cards because your finger has to be on where the text is to lift the card out of the deck? I'm asking because it'd be such an easy thing to fix, but you just released the fame and charged money for it in an unplayable state.

I’ve played this game via the Xbox cloud app on this iPad and it works brilliantly. Why is the native app worse?
All it needs is a better way to preview your cards and / or controller support.
At the moment it’s incredibly frustrating to peek at your cards before using them, half the time you end up using them in error!
Please, I beg you, give it a bit of love devs

This is the best game on the iPhone. Playing on the iPhone max, works great.
The learning curve is hard but so unbelievably rewarding when you win!
You can lock your phone, come back 4 hours later and bang… exactly back where you are…. This seems as it should be but so many games can’t handle this.

Brilliant Experience on iPad

I can’t speak for the iPhone experience - based on other reviews it seems the smaller size wasn’t properly accounted for - but on an iPad I’ve been having a whale of a time. No real problems with navigating the user interface (although I can report that I’m considerably less likely to know the names of any of the enemies than my partner who plays on PC, because of the mouseover/touch differences), and the game itself is just great.
Easy to learn but deep in complexity and hard enough to be satisfying without being off-puttingly frustrating, the gameplay itch it scratches is the most like World of Warcraft dungeons & raids I’ve found in years (the only thing it misses is the teamwork). The sense of having multiple goes at a raid/the spire, the deck-building like reworking and refining your talents and gear, working through increasingly complex trash mobs to powerful bosses, even the wipes/deaths only bring the determination to try again and beat it next time. You even get alts!
The random encounters in the ? rooms offer some variety so you’re not just whacking away at enemies the whole time as well as interesting decisions to make about what resources you value most.
Each character has its own feel and multiple playstyles which keeps them feeling distinct and unique while still allowing you to find your own favourite way(s) of playing each one, and the endings when you finally beat the heart on each character feel genuinely rewarding and appropriate.
The art varies from beautiful to beautifully grotesque, and the UI is - at least on iPad/PC - clear, easy to understand, and attractive. The music is lovely and both it and the sound effects are atmospheric and immersive. I also appreciated the option in the menu for “fast play” - it really speeds up encounters with multiple enemies.
It’s also occasionally quite funny - there’s a particular mask available from one of the random encounters which has no impact on gameplay but a fun effect, and when you beat the Heart on The Defect it’s worth watching the animated section for awhile to catch any special easter eggs.
All in all I highly recommend this game. One of the best gaming experiences available on iOS.

The game is amazing and has been since it’s release but the port is a disgrace… considering the amount of copies sold, you would think the devs would make an effort to make a decent version of the game. A real shame. The game feels laggy, frame drops, you sometimes grab and play the wrong card, the sound fx seems different than the original version, the touch detection is horrible, it will select a card when you try to scroll. And there’s more. I’m on iPhone 13 Pro Max so I was expecting something better performance wise.

A really really good game that’s got a nice learning slope and stays fun for ages once mastered. A really nice concept, well executed with interesting dynamics and very good balancing. The combination of a roguelike with a turn based card game works so well and is especially well suited to mobile gaming. I can’t recommend it highly enough… although be warned: you might find yourself sinking quite a few hours into it! The negative reviews criticising the interface port aren’t wrong, and there’s a few bugs I would appreciate being fixed, but because the game is turn based you can take the time to be careful with the interface while you’re new and once you’ve played it a couple of times you should get used to it fairly easily. I especially like it on the iPad but increasingly play it on my phone too, on the commute.

A highly enjoyable and addictive mashup of run-based rogue like and a combat deck builder.
Experience is somewhat compromised by the fact that very little appears to have been done to an interface clearly designed for a mouse making it pretty clunky. Cards and buttons are small and easy to miss press, crucial information is hard to see as it’s designed to be hovered over, and the whole thing is cumbersome to interact with. It’s easy to accidentally play the wrong card, make a choice without properly knowing what you’re choosing or struggle to properly press teeny tiny icons with your fat thumb.
Another associated negative is that the game is clearly designed to be viewed on a PC screen resulting in tiny text on cards and prompts and a general feeling that everything is much too small. There must be people for whom this game is unplayable on a phone.
It’s unfair to compare it to Hearthstone which is made by a company with far more resources, but that game does everything that’s a negative in Slay the Spire much better on phones, fully optimising the experience for the device.
Slay the Spire is a great game, but for the price it’s surprising that more effort was not made to make it play better on a touch device and make it look better on a small screen.
Recommended if you can get past the fiddly interface and have good enough eyesight for some seriously minuscule text.

Having played a bunch on pc thought I’d give the mobile version a try to play whilst in bed. For the most part it’s the same game which is great, hours of fun and a great value
The only negative I have is the port, on my iPhone 11 I’m getting fps dips for some reason despite it being a basic game. The text is also very small with finicky controls on the smaller phone screen. This seems like the perfect game for iPad but it’s just alright to play on the phone.
Either way great game and definitely worth the price!

Old review:
All the icons are now huge, making it hard to path I reinstalled just in case and all my progress has now gone and I couldn’t enter a new save name because the keyboard doesn’t pop up The card selection interface during battles is offset weirdly so selecting a card feels really shonky Was great, played everyday almost but now…

Slay the Spire is an exceptionally well designed game, it has depth but also encourages you to play in small chunks which is terrific and always made it a good candidate for a mobile port.

I recently bought this on the PS4 and loved it. Brilliant for an hours entertainment. But I spent 7 hours on it on first load! I wondered if they’d ported it to iOS and was really happy to see they have. And it’s absolutely the same as the PS4 version. It was £8.99 and worth every penny. I love card based combat games like MTG. This has nothing like the variety of cards in MTG but it has some very interesting ones and lots of ways to use card combinations. Also, love the relics that you find. I’m still finding new ones every so often, despite being 90% through the PS4 version. The relics just keep on coming and some have extremely powerful effects. As do some power cards you find or buy that stay on the table for the whole battle (example “the first card you play each turn is played twice”). Have to say the battles are for the most part very well balanced and seem fair, even the boss fights. There are a few though that I struggle with. There’s a boss that summons two minions, next turn the boss and minions will hit you for over half your maximum hit points. There’s not much likelihood of coming back from that, particularly as if you kill the minions before the boss, he just summons more! But with a bit of good luck on the cards I’ve drawn, I’ve beaten him a couple of times and it was very satisfying. Definitely worth the money.

A great port of a wonderful game. I played for about 100 hours on PC and decided to try it on mobile.
Never fails to keep me interested - the short battles are great for mobile, with your mind always looking for card synergy and planning on the build you want. There’s increasing difficulty levels to aim for, and daily challenges with leaderboards to have a bit of variety. It even records stats, which are fun to look at to see your best runs.
Haven’t had any performance problems on iPhone 11 - the only downside is that it is difficult to swipe up for the Home Screen due to positioning of the cards. I also think the UI could make better use of screen space, as the port has gone through very little change.
I think it’s well worth it and I’ve probably played more on mobile than PC now. Lots of great moments where you truly feel you have ‘broken’ the game with a great combo. 999 block? 1000+ damage? Infinite combos and 99 energy? Other games don’t come close to that feeling.

Incredibly annoying card selection in hand and in discard pile

 –

2021-02-05
Anyone who has played card games knows that it takes a while to begin to recognise cards and know what they do without reading the flavour text/action text.
However, when this game was ported to mobile they made it so that the hand shows the top 1/3rd of the card only. Selecting the card from your hand allows you to read the text, but deselecting that card if you decide you don’t want to use it (or to read your other options) is next to impossible. The area of the screen which you can press to deselect the card is tiny and counterintuitive. This means you end up using all sorts of cards that you don’t want to.
Some cards allow you to select from your discard pile. Because this game is ported to mobile, you would anticipate that you can press and drag to scroll - but the card selection occurs on the press and not on release. This means that if you go to scroll on the cards rather than off to one side (which feels clunky and odd) you pick a random card to add back to the top of your deck.
I’ve done a few runs now, and every single run has had at least one misplay because of counterintuitive design.

Great game, not great port

I’ve been LOVING this game on Xbox, so I thought I’d pick it up for my iPhone. I’m gutted.
The interface is just too cramped to read and fiddly to use. It looks like a direct port without any thought for how it would look on a smaller screen. It’s borderline unplayable for me. Gutted I just lost £10. 😢

Tldr; great game, good port, launch bugs fixed, slightly quirky UI which becomes a non issue over time. iCloud save support promised by dev and eagerly anticipated.
The game is just amazing, the quality of the port is good but not great. However, the minor porting issues are far outweighed by the quality of the game - buy it if you are even mildly interested.
I have 45 hours play time at the time of writing and my save file says I’ve completed under 50%. I haven’t even begun to explore the ascensions so I feel like there is at least 100 hours in this game at a bare minimum.
The crashing issues from launch have now been fixed. The game allows podcast/audio to be played at the same time as the app is open (open the control center and replay the audio if it stops upon opening the app).
Unfortunately I can’t have a YouTube video windowed on top of the app and playing at the same time but this is an edge case I feel won’t matter to many.
With iCloud saves this app is a comfortable 5 stars.

TLDR: Amazing game, great port.
About the game:
I’ve already put 200 hours into this game. Easily the best single player card game I’ve ever played. Possibly the best rogue-like, too.
Extremely addictive and fulfilling game play loop. Suitable for short bursts of gameplay, but it also for long gameplay sessions. So much variety with excellent power-level balance.
Aesthetics and sound design are great. My personal ambience preference would be something more nihilistic (like darkest dungeon, another fantastic game), but there is a lot to love here, too.
About the port:
Port is really good. Controls are great on iPad (not sure about phone). Even with many cards in hand, it is easy to scroll through and select the correct card. Not quite the precision of a mouse, but not far off.
The game has never crashed for me, and the save state has never failed ie no lost progress. (The Windows version crashed a few times in the 20 hours I spent on it...)
Some small issues that would be nice to be resolved:
Doesn't always show upgrade info checkbox when selecting cards.
Selecting beta art is finicky.
Cancelling potion targeting is also finicky.

I started on my iPad figuring the larger screen would be best, but recently I’ve been on my phone much more and the fact you can’t play the same save across devices is an absolute deal breaker. Is it just plain impossible to develop, or is it just taking time? There’s absolutely no way I’m starting over and having two games to level up from scratch.

As others have said, this is a fantastic game that we’ve been waiting for for a long time. It’s everything you could want.
As others have also said, there’s a bug that makes it very difficult to choose individual cards, particularly the second card from the left in your hand. This generates misplays which can be fatal.
Sort it out guys. This is an expensive game and the basic controls should work.

I enjoyed this on my iPad, game runs good on my relatively old iPad Air 2. It’s fun, clever and addicting. The only things which annoys me is when picking a card from hand I can’t read description sometimes and have to move it above, it’s clearly buggy. I tried single tap, long press and drag and there’s no reliable way to read the card before you play it.

Was a bit dubious about buying this as a few of the reviews said it was a poor port but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The game runs like an absolute dream on my phone (XR) and now I’m finally able to play one of the best, most addictive games to come out in the last few years any time I want. Highly recommend this game to everyone. I’ve even got my wife, who rarely plays anything, hooked on it!

Excellent port with a few niggles

First of all, I absolutely love this game and am super happy it’s come to iOS!
The few issues I have are mostly small:
- As mentioned in other reviews, trying to switch between cards to decide what to play can be buggy and sometimes puts the card into play when trying to read it.
- The buttons on the main menu are a little too small for mobile devices.
- The ‘confirm’ button when you discard a card overlaps the ‘discard pile’ button
- No iCloud support currently, I’d love to be able to try this out in my iPad as well but don’t want to start anew.
In summary, the game is fantastic and I would heartily recommend buying it but a few mobile tweaks would be appreciated!

The latest release fixes the bug where the app would load to a black screen on iPhone 6S Plus.
I can now enjoy this addictively great game again 🎉

This is actually a very good port.. almost identical to pc version.. works great on iPad.. a few minor quirks with using a touch screen but nothing you don’t get used to.. playing this version now more than pc version..

Exceptional game

This is an exceptional game, and worthy of all the praise it’s reputation carries. It’s so well balanced and there is areal diversity to gameplay based on character and the many relics / powers.
The port is far from shoddy, all card games on iOS tend to have some idiosyncratic card selection. This is better than most but maybe not my favourite. I would say the port is great, the game awesome and those who review at 1 star because of the card selection are being just a little dramatic (and maybe a little entitled too)
Easily the best £10 on iOS spent in months

Great game but still some bugs

Playing on SE so smaller screen but still just about ok. Lots of dead space so could be more phone friendly. Was crashing when running in low power mode.

Will not open on iPad mini 4

I have contacted the support team and because they don’t recognise iOS as one of their normal platforms they are advising there is a delay in assisting me! Day 3 of the game failing to launch. I have deleted and reinstalled three times a day since purchase and nothing changes. I have uninstalled other apps in case it’s a cache issue...no change. Genuinely believe there is a bug in the app at this point.

Awesome game, disappointing port

I have been waiting for and looking forward to this game for beyond ages. Like,, pretty much from the moment it came out on PC I have wanted to play it on my phone and my iPad. It seemed like the most perfect fit! Quite why it’s taken more that two years to bring it to iOS is somewhat beyond understanding. But what’s even worse is the fact it’s taken this long, and yet has emerged as a severely shoddy port.
Don’t get me wrong — this game is amazing. But the port is dire. Particularly when you consider the price! Had this been 70% cheaper I might have been more forgiving. But this is a lot of money for a two year old game that I’ve already played to death on PC — and hasn’t even been optimised for iOS. The worst issue revolves around moving and playing cards. It is borderline unplayable. The number of occasions when I’ve wanted to play a particular card, but the controls are so bad that you kinda slide off and essentially misclick. It’s actually shockingly bad!
Please can you fix these issues. I’ve never played a card game on iOS that feels so clunky and hard to control. These aren’t demanding requirements. This should be the least to be expected.
I will happily update this review when the game is playable because it ought to be a 5-star experience on mobile.

Excellent Gameplay. Crashy Game. Poor UI.

The card play, runs structure, and overall game are wonderful but unfortunately this isn’t a good port.
- The game crashes often, frequently at the end of long battles. Battle progress is not saved during battle, so a crash means restarting the battle.
- The UI is very fiddly, even on a large iPhone; keyword hints render over the text they are explaining, reading cards in hand is hard as they are anchored to the bottom of the screen, the card upgrade process is slow and laborious, the skip and continue buttons seem inconsistent, and in general the whole game feels like a PC port with little thought put into mobile UX.
- Game can’t survive backgrounding. The lack of suspension mid battle is at it’s most evident if you’re unfortunate enough to get a phone call mid battle. You will lose your progress. That this wasn’t spotted in QA is quite surprising.
- Please, stop pausing my music every time I open the app.

Good gameplay but needs tweaking

First, the game crashes for me if I try to play the daily climb. This is on both on my iPhone 11 Max pro and iPad Pro with latest os updates.
Second, text is too small on some of the cards it’s difficult to read even without needing to have your finger on the screen to drag the card. Can we not have a setting to adjust card size/ text size or have the card text duplicated at the top of the screen?
A bit more explanation or a glossary on statuses etc would be nice. What’s the difference between weak and frail? What does an artifact do? I know I can press the tiny little icon if a status effect is put in, but it’s still very small text.
Finally, it would be awesome to have a cloud save, so I can continue play the same game on different devices.
Overall, still a good game. Just needs improvement and bug issues/crash issues sorted

Great premium deck building game

This is a really good deck building / rogue-like / light RPG fantasy game. Ideal for short, medium and long gaming-sessions (it has that ‘one more go’ quality).
The implementation of the cards on iPad is not perfect, and occasionally I will play a card when I was just looking at the description and that can be a bit annoying.
Personally I would say the game is barely viable on the iPhone at the moment (and I have a Max phone, so the largest available screen) as you really need to squint at the screen to read the card text.
But still a great deck builder 👍

Surprisingly, Utterly, Brilliant

This game was completely off my radar; when I happened to stumble upon.
After staggering over the steep price (and a couple of review videos later), now I can see why the price tag.
This game is a gem. A rogue-like with progression elements and perfectly balanced in so many ways. Power or defence, one big hit or defend one more turn to conserve life, risk vs reward, on every step of the way.
Sure you get a bad deal in one game, and then come back better in the next!
On the deck management side you really need to think about your deck as you go.
But this isn’t overwhelming being given the option to only ever add one card at a time; so you can build the deck to suit your play style.
I’ve only been playing the game for a short while and I can say HOURS will be sunk into this, (and not a crash in site on iPhone7).
Thank you MegaCrit.

Amazing game, good port.

A fantastic deck-building game that’s easy to get into, hard to master but compelling and addictive with that ‘just one more go...’ magic. No run feels exactly alike, and characters with different play styles add to the longevity of this brilliant game.
The port does suffer from a few issues, that if addressed in future updates would make this an instant and easy 5 stars:
- No cloud save. For a game of this type, playing on multiple iOS devices is significantly undermined by progress not being shared.
- Card interaction can be a little fiddly. Tapping a card to read its effects sometimes shows the whole card, sometimes it remains partly obscured by the bottom of the screen. It’s also too easy to accidentally play a card when trying to swipe up to change apps.
Great app overall.

Crashing

Issues with the game crashing, of course your progress is saved, but this is also part of the issue since it’s forcing me to kill the boss repeatedly over and over again but unable to progress to the next act.

Great Port

Amazing port brought this on Xbox,Switch, now iOS. If you’re in to card RPGs games. this is the best pick on IOS.
Things I’d like that are missing/would like adding, iCloud support so I can continue with the same save on my ipad as on my phone.
A option to confirm selection had a coulple is times tried switch cards to them have it gone into play when didn’t want to. Also when trying to read card details it’s picked the card up for me and played. Maybe a tips/tricks what I should have changed/added on my run to get further.

Excellent port

I’ve sunk more hours into this game now than any other. On Steam, Switch and honestly it was still an instabuy on here. Port seems excellent. Two thoughts for improvement;
1. Would be good if had iCloud save for iPad/iPhone to share progress.
2. Some of the UI on iPhone is tiny. I wonder if the buttons along the top, and relics maybe, could be slightly increased in size. And even the main menu could do with a fat-finger-friendly redesign.
But I mean these are small things. It’s Slay the Spire on your phone. Can’t recommend this game enough.

Love it!

It’s basically an exact copy of the PC version with all the characters to date (June 2020) including the Watcher.
It’s an absolute bargain at £10 with many 100s (1000s ?!) of hours of gameplay to be had as no two runs are ever the same.
Just buy it!

I love this game, i have it on 3 different platforms (PC, nintendo switch and IOS).
The only issues i have with it is that it crashes way too often and i’m forced to start long fights again and again because of it, and it seems really slow if you’re used to the 60fps+ that nintendo and PC give you. Other than those main things i’ll still always enjoy playing this game and i’m glad Megacrit decided to bring it to our phones.

I held off buying Slay the Spire for other platforms but had heard a lot of good things. Nothing could prepare me for the addictive gameplay it offers! It’s the very epitome of the one more turn game. Beautifully polished app with great art and runs like a dream even on older devices.

What can I say that hasn’t been said already?

A fantastic game, and a must buy for any fans of roguelikes, card games and anything in between. However, it’s only 4 stars for me because of the delay and lack of transparency regarding the release, although thankfully they made it premium and not free with IAP.

A brilliant single player card game that deserves its universal appreciation from gamers across the multiverse of platforms. This game has inspired so many good and bad copycats but I’m so glad this is finally on mobile. It feels right at home on touchscreen so dust off those climbing boots adventurer - the tower awaits!

This is the cheapest version of Slay The Spire, yet it is far from the worst version. My only complaint is the lack of graphics settings to be able to play the game at a higher frame rate. Sadly, this port runs at 30FPS, but that isn’t the worst thing considering it’s a turn-based card game! This is a must buy for anyone who loves great games.
