General election petition

Version 5.31.1
Almost 600,000 people have signed a petition calling for an immediate general election due to the shocking way the Conservatives have led the UK downhill. According to the BBC, this petition doesn’t even exist.
In unrelated news, the BBC has Conservative Party members as the chairman and on the directors board.
Big protests such as the Enough is Enough campaign aren’t even covered. Absolutely embarrassing. The BBC was once a reliable impartial news source. Now it’s state propaganda run by the government.

Version 5.31.1
There’s been a few annoyances coming into BBC apps. Their continual insistence on needing an ‘account’ and other invasive practices. But I’ve suffered that.
The lad test update though does something really stupefying. It removed the menu in that brings up the submenus that organised all the topics. I’ve spent a bit of time seeing if they just moved this, but I can’t see it anywhere.
It means if you know what you are hunting for (say market data, or science or a regional news), you need to either search in the search bar or waste time setting up customised news interests - that don’t guarantee that it’ll catch all you are interest in nor have a reliable location in the app.
It’s fashion over function - glitz is pointless if finding what I want, over what you want to deliver, is a headache!

Version 5.8.0
I’ve now deleted this app following the introduction of a mandatory log in.
Not only is this pointless as it won’t improve my app experience, it’s also arbitrary. I don’t need to log in to read the news on your desktop site (I’m prompted but can ignore it) but I can access BBC news stories from the Apple News app.
Reuters and Sky do not require any form of log in, so why is it needed here?
Ince this is removed or made optional I will gladly reinstall and use this app again.

Version 5.4.1
Checking against other apps like Sky news I’m appalled how often important stories are missed and breaking stories can take a day or more to appear on this app. Add the well documented bias enforced by government via openly Tory members, chairman and director general, that has led many top journalists to leave the BBC and this is altogether a very unreliable app and source for daily news.

Annoying notifications

 –

2022-09-25
Recent overuse of breaking news notifications has meant I’ve turned this feature off. Maybe it would be better to classify notification levels so only truly news worthy breaking news items could be chosen and the inane celebrity related items could be ignored…e.g Queen dying is breaking news. Family travelling to see her, is not.

OK for basic news, needs better writing/proofreading

 –

2022-09-24
The BBC would like to be thought of as the premier news service for all but the editorial content does not always live up to this. Good for the basics of what's in the news but bedevilled with dumbing down, bad writing, poor proof-reading, and misleading headlines. Far too much football on the local area pages- belongs on sport. Surely other things happen in my area????

No sign in

There is no legitimate reason for compulsory sign in - try Reuters for serious need analysis or ITV or Sky for good news apps that DO NOT require sign in !

Cookie machine

 –

 –
2022-09-23
When you go out of the UK (e.g on holiday) this app will put cookies on your device whilst claiming it gives you the option not to. Clicking on the option against cookies takes you in an endless loop without the ability to confirm your choice and thus forces you to accept all cookies (that option works perfectly!) to get rid of a message taking up nearly half the screen. Disgraceful and dishonest practice BBC!

Too many breaking news notifications

 –
2022-09-18
The app is generally good, and I’ve signed up for the breaking news push notifications to keep up with top news updates. The bbc news app’s definition of a breaking news story is ridiculous though. One breaking news alert regarding the passing of the queen would be sufficient, but I’ve received such an annoying overload of notifications in these 10 days it’s so frustrating.

So many notifications about the Queen

This app can be handy, but nowadays all it does is send me notifications about the Queen, I’m talking 15 a day. Nothing is even happening but it seems there’s still something to notify the entire country about every couple of hours.

Used to like this app, easy to use and received the occasional notification about major world event, never too often. Now I receive constant trivial notifications about the monarchy following the Queen’s passing (“David Beckham in the Queue eating crisps”, “Charles wanting to give the Nation a hug”, “small child gives William a small bear”... I mean?!). Are you aware that actual news is happening all around the world?! You are responsible for killing satire and rendering Black Mirror obsolete. Seek help!

This app works well and I use it most days, several times a day. One very frustrating feature is when you’re scrolling through a news item and you place your finger on a photo by mistake and continue to scroll, it opens the photo instead of allowing you to continue through the story. Opening a photo should require a quick tap and scrolling past a photo should not impact your reading experience.

Now requires account

 –
timofTheGrey
 –
2022-09-16
This app became completely useless with the latest update as it now requires an account. I have enough accounts across the internet already and certainly don’t like being forced to sign up just to get news on my phone when I could get the same news on my laptop without an account anyway. Used to use the app every single day without fail but until this account nonsense is done away with, I don’t recommend it to anybody.

Notification overload…

Push Notification level has gone overboard

 –
mairie1890
 –
2022-09-15
The level of notifications in recent days has increased to a ridiculous level. I keep bbc notifications on as a trusted source of truth but a notification for every time a member of the royal family releases a statement or travels is completely overboard. The Guardian has done a much better job of highlighting only key milestones in the Queens funeral week and I hope BBC draw lessons from this

Interactive content never works.

Now needs an account to read the news (the website doesn’t). I don’t want to associate the news I read with an account.
Not being able to open the app, I still found the news alerts helpful… until recently, when they started really spamming the alerts for minor rubbish. You can easily get 10 alerts per day.
BBC news used to be a great app, and a great service. They ruined it.

I shouldn’t have to register or sign in to read news on an app the same way we don’t sign in on the web. This is the only reliable source of government funded country’s news, it should be free without having to give any user information.
You also don’t state why we need to login. There is no link as to “what information we collect” which legally as an application you have to do same as with cookies. You have to inform us what you plan to do with our emails. The app needs to have a direct link that explain what you will do with signed in info. What data you plan to collect from my device, cause let’s be honest that’s exactly what you will do. I’ll sign in and register when you cancel the tv licence.

Since mandatory sign in, I have switched over to Sky News & deleted the app. The list of issues I have with this app continue to grow: Major stories totally suppressed that are covered in detail by other news outlets (especially political corruption), worded titles that change the meaning of the story, copy s riddled with mistakes & typos (especially repeated words that spellcheck hasn’t picked up, in most articles, very basic grammatical errors from poor copy writing/editing, slower than other outlets to release breaking news, the totally useless search function which has been a problem since launch is still just as hopeless in spite of much feedback in this respect.

Things changed :(

I don’t understand whey they need me to sign up or make an account now. The app sends drop downs alerts on Iphone about things that have happened but when I click to read news it tells me to make an account, easy enough to do but no clue why I need too now. The app already lets me personalize what news I received and it already sends me updates to my phone without me having an account before so I just don’t understand why it wants me to make an account l, like why do u need my email or anything, the only thing I want from you is news and I already get that, why not make it optional to make an account and explain what benefits come with it and let me decide on whether I want to or not, just feels like if I want to read reliable news I now need to give you something in return and tbh I’d rather just give you money then give you methods of contacting me, giving you money is easy and over quickly, giving you my details means you can contact me whenever, and if it’s optional to not hear anything; again why isn’t it optional just not make an account and continue using it like before?

Generally good but can be frustrating

As reported by another user (more than a year ago), it is really frustrating to click an item only to be taken to another summary page instead of the article.
The main item at the top often gives a headline which you click with the expectation of being able to read the article but it takes you to an update page which just repeats the headline with no further detail.
The latest update has changed the icon which is now far more difficult to identify against other icons on the background. The old solid red icon was so much easier to find. This will be another frustration from now on.

Seems to be asking for re authentication a lot and it’s a bit annoying, also, if I’m signed in, don’t ask me if I have a TV licence.
The New Experience needs to have a settings button, I don’t necessarily want the local news below the headlines. Clicking a story then takes you into the article but what’s with the scrolling sideways for paragraphs? Can we just scroll down like in the previous experience!? Or at least put a setting in there so I can choose.
I’d have chosen scroll up/down for my topics, scroll right/left for stories. Tap to read and scroll down for paragraphs. Swipe right/left for the next story in the topic. Maybe it’s too similar to how the previous version worked but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

It’s ok but with frustrating UX flaws

The app is fine. Or amazing but for a public service… to be expected?! However the fact that if you mistakenly tap on an image in the wish to scroll the image is opened as an image then requires you to close it means it’s not been properly configured for appropriate taps (the same does. Or happen with professionally built apps FB / Insta etc). To make things worse, a horizontal line in a news article, separating the summary and the article body also is treated as an image and thus opens in a black page with just the horizontal ’separator’ line. Poorly built and not properly tested.

Poor iPad UI

I have an iPad with a lovely 11 inch screen, yet the the top stories tab can only present me with 3 stories before I have to scroll to see other stories. My 6.5 inch iPhone in the other hand can present a list of 8 stories without scrolling. Similarly, the popular tab on iPad only shows 6 articles at once. Not all iPad users have poor eyesight. Use the screen estate to its best advantage and present the information the users have come for. I don’t need half the screen taken up with a photo of what you think is the top story, or have it filled with huge thumbnails. Crazy that I can see more info on my smaller iPhone screen than I can on the iPad.

I have tried on another phone & also reinstalled the app but still have the same issue. If this has been turned off then that is a minus in my book so it would be nice to get a response as to why this has happened & hopefully it is just a glitch.

This app is really informative. At times it can get annoying as you have to scroll down for a while just to not find anything that you wanted. However, I'm more annoyed at the fact that there's no stories about the Muslim concentration camps in China. I want to find out more about it and I've searched up for it yet still cannot find anything about it. Please write about it as, after covid, everyone's suddenly forgotten about what's happening in China. Other than them two problems, it's very useful so I would recommend you getting it!

I use it every day. In general it is very good with clear reporting. However I am maddened by the belief that the most important news from Manchester frequently appears to be football matches that have not been played yet! The first 4 items on that page today are such, and the only content for each is ‘match report to follow’. Might as well have the main headline on the site ‘World Ends’ with the only content being‘Apocalypse to follow’.
Usually one can get to the next story by swiping to the left but if that story has not been formatted for the app then it gets missed out. It seems odd to have 2 separate and apparently mutually incompatible forms of story layout in the one app.

Infuriating...

I want to read the news - not constantly opening picture tiles.
When scrolling down a news article, my thumb might move to a part of an article with the intention of scrolling further on, but instead of getting the continuation of the story - the picture (either a correspondent’s profile or a picture from the article) will open up as an irrelevant pop-up.
Please give us an option to turn this feature off - I want to read the news - not dodge ruddy pictures to scroll.

Disappointing that African news (Africa Live) gets put all on one long page (like a parish notice), rather than webpage per item, like other news. It makes it so difficult to use and almost impossible to share a story. Please fix this - African news is important too. It’s not surprising there are so many people out there who are ignorant about Africa, when the premier news source with world-class writers, displays the news from the continent in such as a difficult to use manner. Please sort this out - it’s frankly embarrassing that in 2020 this is still an issue.
Also, you seem to have news blackouts on certain countries. I never saw a single thing about the Pakistan floods, and I have an Asian news flag in ‘My News’ but yet you report on floods in Philippines. The Armenian/Azerbaijan war took weeks to report. The Sudanese unrest in 2019 was also ignored.

Latest update (Oct 2020) not behaving

Annoyingly American 'nikname'

2020-10-08
Some issues seem to have crept in - I think at least some of these may be to do with the ‘dark’ mode being enabled on the phone.
Newspaper pages are now often shown as just blank grey blocks. When they are displayed they are often with black text on a very dark grey background (instead of white)
General navigation/response seems to be very poor compared to previously - there is a noticeable lag in content being displayed when selected and the navigation seems a bit woolly.

Overall a pretty decent app, but with a few niggles. I frequently find that I go back from an article, and it jumps to the top of the list of stories - annoying to have to scroll down to where you were up to. Is also too easy to swipe right and left to the next story - again annoying, especially when combined with the tendency to jump to the top of the page you were reading a second ago.
And some news articles seem to dump you into a browser-in-app, which works badly. The second that happens I hit the back button as it’s quite annoying and loads slowly.
These have persisted as issues for ages, and are still there in this iteration of the app.

good content, mediocre app

The news content is good, even more valuable in the era of fake news. However, the app could be easily improved in a number of ways:
-When you are scrolling down to read a story and your finger moves 1mm to the side, you jump to another page that you have no interest in. Scrolling back the other side goes to the top of the article.
-You click on the menu hoping to see different news categories and no, you realise the menu is rubbish and only has the settings and feedback form.
-Some news articles only available in video format? Get an intern to write a transcript, not all of us like to sodcast our newsfeed to the rest of the train commuters.

Review UPDATE.....
Latest version rotates to landscape but does not rescale the image. This results in a picture which only fills half the screen! And you still can’t scroll between images!!
Get a decent beta tester before issuing these “upgrades”.
This is one of my most used apps but I’ll never understand how you can take something perfectly good and “upgrade” it to be something less. I was pleased to see you’d spotted the image zooming has been accidentally removed but even the update to restore this is only half working. I can now zoom into a single image but not scroll between them. Another update required I think but surely someone tests these things before they’re released.....

I have had this app on my iPhone and iPad for more years than I can remember and I have always used it as my main source of daily news updates. However, with the latest updates he text size no longer increases to match your devices settings. I have my text slightly larger as I find it much more comfortable to read.
I will cope because I love the app so much but my daughter has had to stop using it as the text is far too small for her. She is registered as partially sighted, she was born with congenital idiopathic nystagmus, and such her text size needs to be 18pt at least.
Please can you make sure this is sorted out for your next update.

As the title says, it’s a good app, pretty well laid out and easy to use. But why is it, just like many other web/app designers tend to do the same nowadays, why not have the pinch to zoom ability added to the app, one of a smartphones primary features?
Designers may very well say “we’ve made it so it’s optimal viewing for a smartphone”, but that is not always the case and as every user is different, leave it up to the user to decide if they want or need to use pinch to zoom on a phone or tablet that is designed to do just that!

Shame about the font change

Shame about the font change
 –
2020-08-16
I use this app every day, often frequently, and enjoy the coverage offered by the reporters. My rating is lower simply because of the font change in the most recent update. I can’t find how to revert to the previous, and I just don’t like the look of this one. The article I want to read always seems to take a couple of seconds (in app terms, too long) to open, and then I have to accept this strangely fatuous font, even while reading about some very serious issues. It seems a strange choice to make as a developer, and not one I’d have made. If you can undo the font change and speed up the article loading to their previous versions, my user experience would be greatly enhanced.

Not working as before - a retrograde step

 –
What difference does it make!
 –
2020-08-15
Despite deleting and reloading the App twice to my iPhone yesterday and again this morning, once closed and then reopened the font changes to one that is less comfortable to read and I can no longer click on any image to allow the opportunity to zoom. I have the same problem on my iPad.
I gather this is a purported upgrade but it is a retrograde step. Surely upgrades should build on what works and not undermine the experience of using the App. The font style and size is not easy to read and not being able to zoom in on an image is most definitely unhelpful.
After downloading it performs as I would expect but it is returning to the App after closing it, that I experience these difficulties. It appears to work as expected on my iPad.

I do like like this app and use it a lot. My one main gripe is the that home page articles with the LIVE icon almost never link directly to the story in the thumbnail. On arriving on the LIVE page, the content is always chugging away on it’s own agenda and you are often left at a dead end as far as the story that caught your eye is concerned. Sometimes, if you scroll down, you might find the story. Sometimes if you run the video, it may have the story... but it’s all a bit vague and frankly annoying. Other than that, good job.

Please, please, please stop being so negative and anti Government. We should be supporting the Government during this very difficult time. This is a new disease and the Government have had to deal with it despite the constant attacks from Press and Media. If mistakes have been made we can deal with this through a public enquiry at the appropriate time.
I think questions will be asked about the Press coverage as well. It has been dreadful and a good example of why news 24/7 is not always want people want. Negative, negative and most of the time just rude. The way the Ministers have been spoken to at the the daily briefings is a national disgrace and probably the reason most people have stopped watching.

Generally a good app which I use most mornings. I particularly like the fact that it shows the front pages of each of the national newspapers and that you can either look at the top stories of the day, the most-read stories or tailor the feed to suit your own interests.
Criticisms - the extremely irritating silly music they feel they need to use to accompany their videos, particularly the more light-hearted ones, and the fact that the videos are not updated very regularly. Sometimes the same ones sit there for days.
Also the fact that you cannot contact the reporter of any story to point out any factual errors or poor grammar or offer them further information you may have etc.

It’s taken me a while to adjust to this app: previously there was a lot more news content (that seems a very long time ago) and then the makeover to the current version felt like the beeb was dumming down their articles as they were reduced to video clips and much shorter articles. I’ve adjusted now and accepted I’m in the minority of wanting more detail - that’s really what newspapers are for. Overall, very good and the regular updates mean the news isn’t stale.

Far too much repetitive coronavirus news and information and simple repetition ad nauseum of simplistic government propaganda slogans . Are none of your investigative reporters asking why the UK seems worse hit and more poorly prepared than many neighbouring countries and apportioning blame and calling politicians to account - they and the editors of your news seem just to report human interest stories and “happy clapping” success rates. The standard is very poor and I’d give you nil stars if I could. As for tv, overexposed Huw Edwards putting on his “dead voice” as if he cares makes John Macdonald (see Falklands War bulletins) look positively charismatic!
Keep this standard up and I’ll gladly vote to abolish the licence fee as there seems to be no difference between your standards and the rest!

Sensationalism is the key word. Frightening the public , twisting the story to make things worse than they are , changing attitude to stories from for to against and vice versa . Always happy to find someone who will criticise how things are being done. Having people give there own story and accepting that they are experts when they know nothing. Skewing questions you have a disadvantage how twist time them. This is a crisis you should be leading the way all pulling together. Not trying to find fault with everyone and everything. We have more than our share of bad press from other news channels and newspapers who are only interested in a scoop no matter if it be true or false. Stick to supporting your country not trying to pull it apart.

Good but frustrating at times

 –
Normally pleased with apps
 –
2020-04-21
My biggest frustration is clicking on a story which is of interest by its title and finding it only takes me to a general page where I have to scroll down for ages to try (and sometimes fail) to find the article I'm interested in.
Another is leaving stories for many days or even weeks so that they block fresher news.
When an existing news item is updated, often repeatedly and as indicated by the time under the title, you have no idea whether there's been a small change or major additions without re-reading it.
Finally there are too many typos and similar; it makes me worry if the articles are sufficiently checked.
I still score it with four stars, and I use the site a lot, but for the reasons I give it is frustrating.

Unfortunately getting worse

2020-04-21
For years this has been my ‘go to’ app. Unfortunately in the last 18 months it’s moved away from being matter-of-fact towards a list of articles showing too much of the writers’ personality.
Previously, articles would be a quick read to bring you up to speed. Now they seem on a par with well known social media apps, with continual scrolling, both in terms of length and in number.
In addition there’s been a distinct move towards ‘click bait’ and an obvious promotion of programmes. For example, headlines through the day that happen to have an associated episode of panorama that evening.

IOS 13.4 stops swiping left to page through articles

It is perhaps telling that the info about the info on App appears to have been last updated in 2017!
The primary reason for the feedback is that the App behaviour seems to have changed with iOS 13.4 (both phone and iPad versions) and swiping either doesn’t work anymore (looks like this on iPad) or is slow and delayed on iPhone to the point that it mostly selects text rather than changing page.
While I am here, I want to agree with other comments. The content is just too mixed up. I want to be able to page through articles like a newspaper. I don’t want ‘My News’ to be a whole mix of articles, videos, podcasts etc. Just give me material to read!

I am sorry to say but the level and quality of the news coverage has deteriorated. When it was first revamped a while back, I thought yes , this is good. However it has gone down hill since then. It is as if you cannot be bothered to find new stories. Quite a few items remain there for days and days and in some cases weeks. Finally I have to say you are no longer my trusted source for news. Your left wing bias comes through time and time again when you either fail to report important happenings and if you do there is always a left wing bias put on the way it’s reported. Your job as our national news agency funded by the people should reflect a fair and even unbiased reporting. This you have been failing to do on all fronts.

Videos don't respect screen rotation anymore so the image is squeezed into width of device making it hard to read captions and subtitles. AirPlay however works correctly, but we can't carry our appleTV and screen around with us!
There's also the issue of not being able to tell which articles require further content download or not, which are video stories and which are text. The bulk of text stories are held in a cache for offline viewing. Really good for use on train and tube where coverage is sketchy, but increasingly articles need an active connection and whilst you can tell some stories require that by the reversed out text, many don't and it's frustrating to click but not get the story due to connection status. It wastes time and battery.

Please can it be investigated why images do not work correctly with smart invert on the iPhone. My iPhone 7 Plus using the most up-to-date software and smart invert as I am severely visually impaired does not correctly display the images or photographs because these too are inverted like text. The app ought to be able to work with the iPhone smart invert and ensure that the the text is inverted but images are not and therefore photos and videos are correctly displayed and don’t display like ‘negatives’ when using smart invert. Needing to turn smart invert on and off repeatedly to view photographs and videos is a real nuisance when using the app.

As a whole, the actual app is fine, I find it easy to navigate and personalise etc. And I can read the news, which is what I want from this app. What I don’t want is constant push notifications despite all of the notification options being turned off. Stop forcing me to see human interest story headlines! Unless there’s an animal involved, I’m not gonna read it. Personal taste aside, I’ve specifically set most apps to not give me notifications so this is very frustrating.

Along with my below comments from previously I would like to add that the search function is practically useless. I can only search for a topic like “Science” or “Sport” and not for the actual article, like “Mars Rover” or “Rugby six nations”. Surely this would be a more useful feature!?
We are almost there. Being taken to the top of the page when scrolling through articles has almost stopped now. However, when I go into an article, read it, and then go back out I will sometimes be taken to the very top of the list again. This means I have to scroll and scroll and scroll, trying to remember what I have and haven’t yet read. Like a web browser it should be intelligent enough to work out where you are at all times. I don’t mind it going back to the top if it asks first or sends a note saying page has updated. I just don’t want to be taken to the top without me invoking it.

I have tried every way to turn it off - turned off notifications altogether but they keep coming (with sound), turned them back on with sound turned off but they keep beeping. I know several people who have also mentioned this and expected to find these reviews full of that comment, surprised there are not others. If not fixed to how it used to be I will need to delete.

Losing user friendliness with each major new interface update

It might sound lazy or stubborn, but I stopped swiping through videos ever since the interface started requiring an extra click to go into videos. Just so they could tease trailer the videos on a preview carousel; ironic!
“My News” used to be separate tabs mixed in with the main tabs along the top - now it’s another click into "My News" and then scroll through them within a subset of tabs. Why, for what gain?
I wonder if the developers / product managers would benefit from real ‘consumer’ input, rather than self validating their own new design ideas.
It’s still my favourite go to app for news and other reading. Not in depth articles, but that’s what I want from a mobile news app.
Offline viewing could be more intuitive and easier to kick off when you only have limited time before you go underground. Unless I’m missing something I find having to open each story in order to ‘cache’ item locally, but any sniff of the weakest signal and it won’t let you even open the cached page. Ho hum.
I’ve decided to give it an extra star - 3 was too harsh :)

New Layout More Difficult To Use, Videos Playback Still Terrible

Having the My News and Top Stories at the bottom makes it very difficult to use and increases the chance of you dropping your phone. You can barely reach the buttons using your thumb now, which makes this updates’ focus on making navigation easier a joke.
Who thought this was a good idea? Did you actually test it on an iPhone X? Because using this app without a lower bezel is a nightmare. You’ve just made the app terrible to use on Apple’s flagship, plus increased the risk of people smashing their phones. Nice job! Not.
In addition, and a more long standing problem... every time I play a video, without fail, it begins playing and like clockwork, after a few seconds, it restarts! Then other times the videos just won’t load “this content is not available” etc. Poor.

Go Forward or Backward

 –

 –
2018-10-02
Sorry but the previous version was better than this latest revision. Now there is so much news available but not properly categorised or is out of date, you can be forgiven to miss something important. It also wastes time - reviewing old items that certainly should not appear on “My News”. It may have a categorised place though.... How about a category for “old news” or “ Updates”
To help with all of this, it would be good if at the end of each item, both in picture format or detailed text, you add the date and time the item was first broadcast. You can also add an update date / time, but keep you first broadcast date / time as well. The date / time of your informative news incidents is important to everyone so this is a very worthy consideration.
Thank you for reading and considering this.

The app I currently like using. However it could be even better with the addition of 3D Touch capabilities. the last few days there have been many blank slots, grey rectangles where news items should be dated 1 Jan 1970, even the main top slot in some cases. further, Cornwall region has only one item which keeps changing so there is obviously developing news which is not storing in the subsequent news area below, and in the Liverpool region news, the "Live" news is actually west midlands and the black country. Get a grip. Otherwise I use it every cat throughout the day and like it, but these bugs are annoying.

1. Too often "stories" that are thinly veiled corporate product placements have been featured as news. Typically these so called "news items" purport be championing a cause and are often seeded with deliberately controversial subject matter or individual to ensure a follow up story, thus guaranteeing even further publicity for any brands mentioned. An example is the recent L'Oreal placement, a completely contrived and not at all newsworthy story about a hijabi wearing shampoo model, it is then "discovered" that she made controversial political tweets.
2. Many video links fail, content is unavailable

Distracting Sign Language during morning news and weather

I watch the morning news and especially the weather at :15 and :45 minutes past the hour.
The new weather graphics means that the whole map of the UK is shown, and not zoomed to show individual regions anymore.
With a person signing the weather as it is presented, the full image itself is also reduced in size to make room for the person signing. This means that on my iPhone, the details are now very difficult to see.
According to statistics, only .001% of the population use BSL...
Can’t you give the option of turning this sign language off? Can’t you provide subtitles? I’ll have to go to another network to get my morning news and weather otherwise.

As a, more than daily, user of the app I’m astonished that the new version has been released. Up until this week the app has been fantastic.
Before it was always possible to switch to UK news, Business, Tech easily and check out different stories. I generally read one article in a section, then using a link go to the next and another. When I do this now and then want to go to a new section I have to click back through each of the articles I have read to get the little bar at the bottom to reappear. It is ludicrous. Please return the quick menu option to select a different section or at the very least a home button.

My previous review - “This is a free app linking to the best news organisation in the world presented through an intelligent interface, so I can't understand folks who complain. Let them learn coding and do better or shut up whining! Having said that once 'my news' has been selected it would be handy if the other tabs could be switched off.”
The last version of this App was absolutely perfect, defaulting to the multiple tabs view. It took me a couple of minutes to discover that this was achieved by clicking on the ‘My news’ tab at the bottom. I may be wrong but I think the typography has been changed for the tabs too. Why mess with perfection?

New tab system is less user friendly than the old compact view.

My old review is below - the new tab system has removed the compact view and carousel feature as far as I can tell. This makes it harder to navigate on an iPhone 6s as I now have to select feeds rather than having my chosen few on the grid style my news. I appreciate that the new design may be better for the newest phones but we can’t all afford to upgrade - any chance we can have the old design back?
As it is, the new view has meant I’ve knocked a couple of stars off as it’s less user friendly (the content is still five star).
I’ve left the old review below to illustrate the difference with the new design.
———
Old review:
The latest update which introduces 'compact view' greatly improved my user experience on an iPhone.
The 'carousel' feature completes the user friendly experience for me as I can now access my preferred news feed at one time making scanning stories easier.
Huge thanks to the developers for listening to the feedback - this is particularly appreciated when other major app developers churn out fortnightly 'updates' without any noticeable changes. Clearly this is a company that values the opinions of it's user base and this is very much appreciated.
I've upgraded my rating to five stars - well deserved.
Thanks again!

Awful UI change, making it harder and more cumbersome to use. Swiping was essential to the input use of this app and has been removed to attempt to make it over simplified.
Poor HCI research and no thought to what the user impact of this change would be. Absolutely awful update for useless reasons.
Also why waste all that space on a search button, zero or less people will use it and it’s wasted valuable screen estate. Adding more white has made this ‘reading based*) app blinding to look at. Either dark mode or back to black!

Update Nov 17:
The app could be better. I have not set up any personal settings on the home screen but the main headline says, ‘In a hurry, here’s what you need to know this morning.’ I would prefer not to see this heading but to see the main news headline here instead. Seems a bit of a wasted space, I just want to see the news not a headline telling me what I ‘need to know’ thanks.
=====================
Update: I like this version much more than the last. A good layout of information and channels. Hasn't crashed at all. Well done dev for persevering.
======================
I preferred the layout of the old one. I would simply like rows of small news squares scrolling from left to right, with each of the categories I am interested in on each row. I do not want the big square at the top. Why can't I customise the screen to make this all happen? Let's hope someone is listening as this app could be so good.

I have used this app for several years but lately it has become so ... so .... bad !!!!
I expect a news app to be up-to-date but lately this app is so slow in updating the news.
You can see stories on the app that have been there for days and do you honestly think that by changing the timeline on the story makes it more current ? ... it doesn’t.
I live in Lancashire and I have to wait for days for that section to update and can someone explain why nothing seems to happen over the weekend !!! you are lucky to get a news update over the weekend and when you do, it stays there for several days.
This is a really poor app which used to be good but now, it’s time to delete and find my news somewhere else
