Problems

MrsSusanK
 –
2024-03-10
Version 5.4.1.2
I have the following two issues:
1. Automatic download doesn’t work. Occasionally a random edition does download but the majority don’t. I have the correct settings but nothing I do gets it to work.
2. I mainly use the app for the ‘latest’ option because that way the comments section beneath the articles is accessible (which it isn’t in ‘newspaper’ mode). Suddenly the ‘latest’ tab returns only a blank page - and with the recent update, ‘latest’ has changed to ‘home’, again showing nothing but a blank page.
I have the app on two iPhones and the problems are the same on both. These two faults make the app fairly pointless for me.

Love it but

Version 5.3.1.52
I like the telegraph, but unfortunately the standard of journalism along with th way it is presented has deteriorated. With the paper Telegraph, you might have needed long arms, but it was easy to glance at an article and scan through it to get the gist and decide whether it was worth reading thoroughly. Not so with the app. I feel sometimes it is designed to waste my time, with sometimes three or more articles about the same thing.
The careless spelling should be picked up by spellcheck, and a proper editor would also spot the grammatical errors as well; perhaps my comment above has spotted why.
Improvement needed.

Been really happy with the app over the years. But there’s one really frustrating issue. If you read the paper and then dive out to another app, to perhaps research something on the web that you’ve read about (using for in-app ‘Search web’ feature), and then return to the app, it says ‘loading’ and then puts back to an earlier page in the paper, sometime a lot earlier. It’s just annoying, that’s all, and has been like it for quite some time. I am surprised it’s not been fixed.

I stopped reading the Times because it failed to reflect varied viewpoints and seemed merely to pander to establishment versions of events. The establishment is currently failing. The Telegraph is more discerning. I still need alternative sources. For example, I watched the documentary The Fall of Minneapolis on YouTube recently which provided comprehensive evidence that the police officers arresting George Floyd did so completely according to the book and he died from a heart attack brought on by drug abuse and a diseased heart, not asphyxiation from the pressure of a knee to the back. I want the clear, unadulterated facts.

Good App but my goodness the Politics

 –

 –
2023-12-01
I was impressed with the App and the content, particularly the Sport and Travel. It’s expensive, I know it’s less than £1 a day but suddenly having all this content available almost pressurises you to read it to try and justify the cost. I only ever bought the paper edition once or twice a week and it was plenty to read in my busy life.
Now the but that puts me off. Aside from the cost, I didn’t like the insane politics and columnists. The xenophobia and blatant racism were sickening. I realised some of my subscription money was finding these people. I see enough of their bile on Twitter that I don’t need to see again in a paid for platform. And the Royals, on and on and on about them. It’s like Jo Wood telling us that “I’m over Ronnie”. No you’re not because you keep banging on about him. No one cares!!!
Summary. Great App, real content is very good, but Politics is toxic.

Daily Telegraph App Useful but has downsides

 –
Techmolino
 –
2023-10-07
It is great being able to read the full content of the Daily Telegraph wherever you are. I've been doing so for over a year and (though a subscriber to paper and print) rarely read the print version. The app can be frustrating: you often have to launch it 2 to 3 times because it crashes. Once it is stable you have to wait while it finds today's edition and then you have to click READ - why does today's edition not just load? Why can't I just fire up the app, walk away and come back to find my newspaper? I terms of general use you click on sections on the left and get headlines. It feels like selecting teletext/web links. It works but the Wall Street Journal app is much better designed and feels much more like a real newspaper. I suggest that the Telegraph moves over to that style as soon as they can.

Clean and very well laid out but no Dark Theme

 –
d.MLT
 –
2023-09-06
I truly love the app (from a pure technical perspective not talking about the content) as it has a very clean and well laid out design. Most other news apps tent to have to many items and graphics that are in your way, when all you want to do is read the news. Congratulations to the developers for creating such a nice news app and for truly understanding what we as users needs
The only problem I have is not having a dark theme option. People such as myself with light coloured eyes tend to have some sort of light sensitivity one way or another. So having the ability to switch to a dark theme and have less light come in our eyes is really important. I hope the developers implement this soon. If not I can always just read the articles in Apple News (I tend to do that most of the time anyway)

Still too many basic usability issues

 –
GJCLancs
 –
2023-08-20
The core content and writing is excellent as ever but the app still has issues with usability. When you read an article, you should expect to return automatically to that page when you return to the app. Instead, it times out and returns to the homepage within minutes. Given the high turnover of news, the article has often disappeared from the homepage by that point, but it is not guaranteed to be visible under the relevant section, if you can remember which section the article appeared under. The page jumps constantly whilst reading comments if comments are still being added. Too often, an article does not allow for comments if there is a risk that the views of Telegraph readers might prove too salty, but whose sensibilities are being catered for? The app seems to have been designed for a phone screen, as there are large areas of white space on the homepage for the iPad app.

The latest update has reintroduced a very annoying occasional bug where the cryptic crossword stops auto advancing as letters are typed, repeats the last letter typed when a square is selected, then locks up. The only cure is to delete and reload the app, with the loss of all puzzle data going back three weeks ... meaning any incorrect entries in the prize crosswords cannot be seen. Also, auto-download has stopped working. At the beginning of the year the Sudoku puzzles were absent for two days and the order of the puzzles keeps changing. This lack of attention to detail takes two stars off the rating. Must try harder.
17 May 2023: I had to delete and reload when the puzzle pages started showing "Loading" but doing nothing.

We have now opted to read just the digital Telegraph rather than the hard copy paper which we had subscribed to for more than 15 years. This was because the subscription was becoming near to one thousand pounds annually. The digital version was for travelll
Img and holidays and occasions.
We are both now getting used to the digital version on our iPhone and iPad. I’ve yet to try out my much heavier laptop for convenience and screen size. The change is still debatable whether the decision was worth the saving.
One definite adavantage is I can read in bed as now! My wife seems to enjoy more the crossword puzzles and even submits her completions! I don’t do the ‘Siduku variety as much as before.
The content is quite easy to navigate. Returning to specific articles.

For a couple of years I have subscribed to the Telegraph, by direct debit, receiving a quarterly supply of vouchers to exchange for the broadsheet. This is at a substantial discount. I give the vouchers to the newsagent each week and the paper is pushed through the letterbox by 07:00 each morning. Excellent. The subscription cost includes the daily delivery of the digital edition of the newspaper. This is easy to read on a tablet or a smartphone. One advantage is my wife can read the digital edition on her tablet while I read the broadsheet, and we can do this while in different places, so neither of us ever miss never anything published by the Telegraph. Other reviewers report difficulty in the automatic download if the digital edition. I have a similar difficulty but this is a tiny issue as the download can be done with a simple click, on waking, and takes a few seconds. Overall I find the subscription service, and the digital edition, exceptional.

I have complained several times over the past couple of months that not only can I no longer access my saved articles, nor am I able to save any articles. After several attempts to help me solve the problem the tech department finally admitted that I was not the only one having this problem, and that they are working on solving it. However, we would not be informed when this problem has been solved, we will just have to keep trying to save articles and hopefully one day one day it will work. For over £100 pa this isn't good enough. I also have a subscription to The Times and when there is a problem with that app they issue an update to subscribers- problem solved. Why can't the the Telegraph do the same?? Very poor customer service indeed, and very poor technical support. It's just not a very good app

The app is a good way to read the Telegraph on your phone or tablet, it can have a few glitches though. The best part of reading the Telegraph on line is looking at the public comments after the articles and contributing your own. I have found though that occasionally the comments can’t be accessed via the app but are ok on the web page version. It’s happened a few times and I haven’t figured out why. The glitch is not down to one device I use, but will repeat on anything I use with the app. It then clears after several days. So I’ve given the app a 4 star rating, because it’s not perfect.

At 75 years old I am undoubtedly not the oldest user of the Telegraph App and there must also be the confession it is also the first time I have employed an iPad. As a consequence of those factors the transition from “hard copy” to the digital format was not without frustrations. However in a short space of time the App has transformed my enjoyment of reading the publication.
Gone is the pile of previous editions and their ultimate. consignment to the recycling sack. No longer are the arms of my favourite chair contaminated by printers ink transferred from newspaper to fabric. Turning on the iPad and activating the Telegraph app is not only easy, it has transformed reading the latest news from page turning to a simple finger - swipe.
Making a decision to embark on vacations no longer requires trying to find a facility which will accept Telegraph tokens, or asking a neighbour to clear the letterbox of numerous copies of the newspaper. All that is needed now is to remember the iPad and my enjoyment of using the Telegraph app can continue without any inconvenience, drama, or reliance on any human interaction by third parties.

I just nearly cancelled my Telegraph trial yet decided to hold off and ask a question. May I ask why the coverage of Rugby is only featuring the Rugby Union version of the sport? I would be interested to know as living in Devon for many years I also suffered at the hands of blinkered teachers who thought league and it’s professionalism was just not ‘Rugby’. I tried to teach them to play more like league and run lines and use the league way of thinking as opposed to the crash and tumble they’d played for a hundred years. The bigotry towards league was extremely surprising to me a young lad. But as time has wore on you can see the changes Union has made becoming a great users of League coaches and plays in the game itself. So back to my point. Is the Telegraph a paper that is blinkered like the old fashioned teachers who disappeared into the woodwork at School who just would change no matter what was needing to change in the outside world? The appetite for Rugby League is huge and to take on the likes of Soccer killing everything and Union just not appealing enough to the youngsters league must be allowed in the column inches and see it thrive (look at Australia with the NRL). In this year of the RL World Cup we need as much coverage in the diverse ranges of sports we have in our great country to ensure we don’t lose the children to video games or soccer. Thanks for listening. I’ll hold off the cancel button for now.

PLUS-It’s useful to be able to download the “newspaper “version so that you can read it later offline. MINUS-If you’re in the middle of a story or the comments and have to leave it till later to read the rest, this app loses your place and you end up back on the homepage. When you read the Telegraph online,in my case using Safari,it takes you back to exactly where you left off last time. Much more convenient! MINUS-No little “bubble “ symbol at the start of an article to indicate you can make comments. The symbol is at the start of the online/Safari version. It’s useful to have it at the beginning so that you can compose your comments from the start of reading the article. MINUS-When you add a comment to someone else’s comment,it’s not clear which comment you’re replying to as there is no @ to make it clear.
MINUS-For me,at least, the text size is too small and can’t be enlarged except in the downloaded newspaper. A bit too small for my 76 year old eyes!
So,to sum up,nowhere near as good as reading it online. The only plus is being able to download the newspaper equivalent to read offline. I’m sticking with my Safari version,thanks-unless all the MINUS points above are addressed.

Telegraph replaced and removed the excellent previous app with the “Latest” section in this app. This is a massive backward step and follows today’s fashion of trying to be distinctive and original by doing exactly the same as everyone else is doing. Previously there were regular intra-day updates in a sensible set of sections, say, the Opinion section and which were ordered chronologically. Easy to see, select, find. Excellent, distinctive, simple. So naturally they’ve stopped that. Now we have a complete mishmash of articles of any random date and infinite categories and sub categories so you will waste much time just trying to find something new or recent or you haven’t already read, days or weeks ago. And it doesn’t get updated with new material as frequently - or I simply can’t find it. If it stays like this I’ll cancel my subscription. Which is a shame because the ‘newspaper’ section is still good.

I am a digital version subscriber. I love having the iPad every morning and devour every article with my breakfast! 90% of the writers express views that are evidenced based and have solid and unbiased opinions. Sometimes you even invite left or right wings views, which offers a good balance. All in all I am
Happy with the quality of DT.
However, what concerns me lately is the inclusion of Paul Nuki, who apparently represents an obscure group called Global Health Security, which seems to follow the lockdown and fear mongering mob’s views. One reader highlighted the connection between this group and Bill Gates and that the DT is funded by Mr Gates. Has DT sold its soul for big pharma money?
This is the only part / direction I am worried about.

Recently switched to the Telegraph app after subscribing to another national newspaper because the Telegraph’s content is better. However, their app isn’t as good as the former one. The former one gave every full page of the entire day’s print edition of the newspaper on which you could then click onto each article to read it. It’s a much better system as it’s like reading the physical edition and you can see at a glance what you want to read. On the Telegraph’s app it’s very easy to miss an article you might want to read because it’s buried away in the paper’s ‘selection’ that is illustrated. I’ll keep persevering but I don’t know for how long...

Bring back the old app - our signal is not that good but it did work! Takes ages to get the crossword to load and after a few clues crashes out and will not reload - just left with a blank page with no instructions as as to what is happening - very frustrating. Why does the app keep taking you back to the previous section when you want to move on to a new part of the paper? Very very close to cancelling!
Got my new air pad now and the whole paper is instantly downloaded.

I have been a Telegraph reader for many years. You have to wonder what the people who used to produce the paper edition are doing now if no longer employed - and you have to sincerely hope they have survived in one way or another.
Mine - and my family’s - only complaint about the paper copy was its sheer bulk, especially at weekends, you just couldn’t get through everything you wanted to read before someone else pinched that section of the paper!
We have retired and downsized, and the digital version of the paper is just perfect for me today. Plenty more time to read as much as I want when I want, and time too to read sections I had to miss previously. I am reading articles that I would not have looked at before, and this means taking more of an interest in new subjects. And nobody can pinch that section of the paper!
As a pensioner I will carry on as long as I can afford it (mustn’t let standards drop!) - so much value for money! Thank you Telegraph!

Have used the Telegraph app for about 10 years. It has been useful and generally enjoyable to use, but throughout all this time it has never worked properly, particularly with the puzzles. Until recently these hugely drained my iPad's battery, to the extent that it had to be re-charged at least twice a day, but the puzzles still freeze. This means that you either have to go into another puzzle and back to kick start things again, or at worst you have to go back to a previous days edition of the paper and then back to the one you want to pick up where you left. All quite annoying and something you think would have been fixed years ago.

With the latest App, I now realise that it has, without me noticing, taken me over the threshold to become the dominant method of reading The Telegraph. The ease of navigation combined with the quality of design and text display, make it a pleasure to read and use. My only gripe is that when I first come to a new edition, it hasn't automatically downloaded as per the setting - not a problem with a good wi-if connection, but a pain otherwise. So nearly there ................ UPDATE AUGUST 2017 rather concerned the App allows one persistent Chinese company to apparently advertise all the time when I open the App following one visit to its main website

I have subscribed for many years via Apple iTunes. It it not possible to access the new app by simply clicking on the ‘restore subscription’. The Telegraph say that it is Apple's problem and Apple say that the problem lies with those that designed the app for The Telegraph. I’m in the middle and having read many of the poor reviews, I think I will simply stick with the old app for as long as it is available. The Telegraph’s latest communication suggested that I delete my current app and install the new one with a new subscription. Excellent idea, but at a cost of twelve times what I am paying now.
That explains it all.

Very good. I like the format. Easy to navigate for a 72 year old. I paid £1, yes £1, for a 3 months initial subscription! An offer I couldn’t refuse.
I have read the Telegraph for over 50 years, but this digital issue is the best compromise for a number of reasons - firstly, it arrives during the night and is available to read immediately. Not sure when it arrives as it’s there at 5am, 4am and even 3am! Secondly, it is lightweight, only as heavy as your device, I use an iPad. Thirdly, no waste paper.
That leaves the only issue - price!!
If it was a guaranteed price of say £5.99 a month for 3 to 5 years, I’d join tomorrow. Maybe even £7.99. But at£12 or more, it’s simply too much for a poor pensioner who is a veteran with 25 years Army service (maybe the Telegraph should have a veterans price?
Surely the cost of producing and distributing a digital copy has to be substantially lower than a printed copy.
Sadly, I’ll probably cancel after my offer term ends and revert to GB News for my daily information.

Two of possibly the best things have happened to me during the pandemic. The lockdown in England made me first buy an iPad and second subscribe to the digital edition of the Daily Telegraph. As a Finn resident and married here to an Englishman for over 50 years, I have over the years graduated from reading the Morning Star (sic) to the Guardian and then to the Times and wisely after growing up to the Daily Telegraph and the indomitable Spectator, I battled long and hard to read the broadsheet version of the paper, especially after my journalist husband has molested it, often even cutting out articles before I managed to get my hands on the copy. Thus the digital edition was a must to get all out of my favourite paper. I read almost cover to cover daily and try my hand at the crossword, but my favourite is the codeword puzzle, which I crack in seconds. Thank you for a cracking, fair newspaper!

The Telegraph app is so easy to use. It’s a doddle to find articles quickly, see previous editions and now that they have combined it with live news articles as they come in it is practically perfect. Compared with apps from other news publications it is a pleasure to read articles here. There are no rolling ads interrupting articles, no painfully slow-loading pictures holding up pages or, in the worst cases whole pages from the actual newspaper reproduced which are almost as hard to read as microfiche. Instead you get individual articles with print you can enlarge if your eyesight requires it and easy navigation. The app was good before but is a whole lot better now. I’m almost tempted to give up my hard copy.

At the moment the news as presented by you is good, clear and factual, but an overwhelming amount is taken up by controversy regarding the rights and wrongs of the way in which the Covid pandemic is being treated by the government.
This is just accentuating the hiatus it has caused to the country, if not to the world, and is fast ceasing to be News in the accepted sense of the word. Much of the detail escapes one, as it is impossible to absorb all the information on offer, and maintain one’s own home, family, business matters at the same time. This morning for example you note 212 items of separate ‘news’ items. Therefore much is not merely objective but opinion of reporting staff, rather than FACT.
This could do with being addressed. Cartoons, Michael Deacon’s individual take on things remains a constant, and so often provides a balance to the actions of many folk which we could easily dispense with. It is essential to maintain a sense of humour in the world situation.

I made the mistake of taking up the free 1 month digital subscription offer when browsing an article. I say mistake because it is not clear how to then manage the subscription or cancel it if required. I wanted to cancel my trial after reading my first edition as it wasn’t for me and the instructions lead you to believe you can cancel the subscription from the settings in your iPad. The free trial does not show up as a subscription (I kept checking throughout the month) then auto-renews and charges your payment method without ever giving you the ability to cancel. There is no email sent to advise your free trial is coming to an end and when you go on the app or website there is no information on how to cancel - just a load of online contact forms. I tried phoning but following the options for a digital subscription just forces you back on to the website - they simply will not speak to you by phone which is unacceptable - you are stuck in a digital catch 22. I finally found a way to manage my account and cancel through their website but only after realising that the method they tell you to use via Apple subscriptions was never going to materialise. It still didn’t show up after they had notified me they were taking payment. I have no idea if I have managed to cancel in time or am going to be sneakily charged for a minimum 6 month subscription which is buried in their small print. Incredibly frustrating and misleading offer.

Yet again a new version of this app has been launched without being tested. When on the puzzle pages the app gobbles up the ipad battery power like no tomorrow. How they have managed this is beyond me. It is making the cpu race. The ipad gets really hot. Then when you go to settings to report the issue, none of the ways to report issues work. If you do manage to finish the crossword in the ten minutes it takes for the app to drain your ipad battery, you cannot submit it. Submitting often now seems to have disappeared as well. That has not worked for some months in the previous version. Please employ some competent developers and testers. After all this time, it is now end August 2020, all these issues still persist. The ipad gets baking hot, the battery drains in minutes and you still cannot report an issue or leave feedback. Update: Now 9th December 2020, app deleted and reinstalled. All the above issues still there and now the crossword pages are completely messed up. Is there anyone out there?

I have recently switched to the digital Telegraph, having had the voucher system on the paper for most of the time it has been running. I am enjoying this version, because I can easily select the articles I want to read and skip around just as easily as with the paper, in fact in some ways it is easier. I don’t have masses of paper in which I have little interest, particularly on Saturday with all the separate papers and magazine - I always felt it was a waste of paper for me. I like doing the crossword, because I don’t need an eraser to make corrections, and it tells me immediately I finish, whether I have the right answers. I am really happy with it.

There appears to be a bug in the latest version which does not seem to be able to authenticate against valid iTunes Telegraph subscriptions, rendering the app inoperable. (Subscriptions to other apps / news services are fine). In my instance Apple have confirmed a valid subscription and an issue with the Telegraph app. The support from the tech team at the Telegraph suggest it is Apple’s issue. The justification for this conclusion is that apparently no one else has reported this issue. The only support offered from the Telegraph team is to delete and reinstall the app, which makes no difference. There appears to be no tech diagnostics capability at the Telegraph end (to see if an attempt to authenticate is made - nor does there appear to be any desire to follow this through); the end result is that I have to cancel my subscription. Very disappointing outcome...

Enjoy the daily reads and when COVID is over will enjoy the Saturday/Sunday hard copies. Living in Scotland the Scottish edition often has things on the front page I don’t see on the app so a Scottish section covering these articles. Also the crossword always seems to freeze and we have to go back to editions then back to the crossword to unfreeze it. Still on the crossword. It would be helpful if there was a stop bar at the end of the words, helps with formulation and rhythm. Also an identified space to key in a word would be useful. I have mentioned this before but it has always been ignored. Can you help or say why that wouldn’t work. You often see this on other crosswords. Thank you, Bob Fowler.

I start my day by reading the Telegraph on an iPad, and doing as many of the crosswords and other puzzles as I can in the time available.
It is easy to read and navigate on an iPad, with a clean layout.
The Telegraph is traditionalist and to the political right, so it will not appeal to everyone. It does provide alternate views from different correspondents. I generally find its reporting reliable, and analysis interesting. It does not hold back from criticising a Conservative government if it disagrees with policies or actions.
Sports coverage is good, but like all papers wastes far too many column inches on the round ball game. The “lifestyle”, culture and travel sections provide good information and ideas, but also too many links to hideously expensive items outside the budget of mere mortals.
I like saving some articles to Evernote for action or future reference. That used to be simple with two clicks on the “share” button. Since the revised design, this has not worked. I can still save, but it has become a tedious, multi-step process. I have considered giving up my subscription until that feature is repaired.

Both my wife and I read the digital edition of the Daily Telegraph between waking and breakfast. I will devour News and Comment sections, she the Features and one of the puzzles.
On retiring in the evening we both do at least one puzzle.
It’s a splendid read, with (usually) balanced and informative pieces by the country’s foremost journalists.
The latest reformatting of the digital version is very good. Well laid out, pleasant font, easy to navigate.
One small irritation remains. Saturday’s Pub Quiz - something we enjoyed immensely in the physical version of the paper (many years ago now) is not included in the digital version. Although Sunday’s two quizzes are good (and included in digital) we always preferred Saturday’s, and would be thrilled we’re it ever to be carried over to the excellent digital version.

I signed up to the “e -Telegraph” when I was waiting for eye operation and found the font of printed newspapers too small to be legible. I had intended this to be short term and to return to a print subscription post op recovery.
I am now hooked on the App and won’t return to print. I can enlarge the font as required, I don’t have piles of paper to recycle and the house is much tidier.
The only thing missing is the tv listing each day but the positives outweigh this. I often share an article with my daughters, particularly if it relates to education and this is so much easier than cutting out an article and remembering to give it to them.
Thank you for being a lifesaver when eye sight problems meant reading was almost impossible.

When using the puzzle pages, since the arrival of iPadOS I have found that although at first all is ok but quickly there is a distinct lag between pressing the keypad and seeing the screen refresh. I hope the developers will soon address this matter. Have to open a different puzzle and return to the one I was on. Seems to clear the problem for a short while.
Problem is particularly noticeable on the crosswords. As you move around the crossword the clues scroll to display the current clue. Once the lag has set in the I find myself unable to do anything until the scrolling has settled down.
I had hoped that with updates this issue would have been addressed. I would imagine that it is a memory management problem. Additionally the app uses up battery at an alarming rate, typically simply doing the sudoku will take battery from 100% tp less than 50%.

This new version is terrible. There are always glitches when you update, but this is the worst yet. And you've inflicted it on us during a lock down when people are reliant on the online version. Do none of your millennial tech team read their own paper? Know about the pandemic? I am constantly having to help an elderly relative that is self isolating to get it to work. At a time when they cannot get their subscribed paper version. And I can't go around and help. It takes forever to download. And the puzzles section just never does. You were warning of an update for weeks - warning being the best word. Why would you do now, this despite everything. Did it never occur to you to delay until a better time. That people would be be relying on this app to help lessen their feelings of isolation and enable them continue life as normally as possible. And you have the cheek to prevent a no-star rating - which is what you deserve.

I have to confess to having given this app a rather scathing 1-star review but now - I’m amending it to 4 stars.
Instead of being frustrated by the appalling deterioration in the presentation of my favourite newspaper app (which had become virtually unusable) I am now able to appreciate its considerable improvements.
Why the change of heart? It’s because my iPad was becoming increasingly unreliable and no longer supported with iOS software updates, so I splashed out and bought a new one.
Without the change of device my poor review of the app would have stood and I’d have given up using the Telegraph app. Arguably, I should not have had to do that to enjoy the same level of service that I pay for with my print and digital subscription, but should I blame the Telegraph or Apple?
The only thing that I wish had been retained from the old app is the facility to highlight a word or phrase and seek a definition or further information - upon occasion I found that to be very useful and my rating would then have been 5 stars.

I find the new version of the Daily Telegraph app much less reliable than the previous version. It keeps closing unexpectedly, does not automatically download and the crossword puzzle suddenly crashes and will not load. Previously downloaded issues of the newspaper suddenly disappear from the library and have to be re-downloaded, which takes ages. Very disappointing. When it does work, the features of the new app are no better than the old version. A big publication like the Daily Telegraph should debug their app before launch, rather than expect subscribers to help do it for them.
Update: Since writing the above a couple of weeks ago, I have lost count of the number of times that I have had to load and re-load editions of the newspaper, which keep disappearing from the archive (they have all just disappeared again!). The crossword puzzle rarely works and almost always crashes while I am doing it, displaying a message saying something about error loading.... The only good news is that my subscription is about to end, though I do feel sorry for all the excellent journalists who’s work is let down by this flaky app.
Update 2: 2 April 2020. My favourite part of the newspaper, the quick crossword, still keeps crashing to the point where it is unusable. Other than that most of the other bugs seem to have been fixed at last.

The early versions of the app were 5*. The last version had problems on the iPad. The puzzles would get slow to respond to touch and the only way to clear it was to exit the puzzle, open another page and then return. It started to use a lot of battery too.
The latest version is even worse. The same slow response problem occurs much more frequently and the work around requires closing the puzzles section, going to the paper and returning. The power drain is now frightening, only attempt puzzles with the charger connected and the tablet on full charge. Attention to detail is abysmal. For the past 2 days the Reveal button on the Quick Crossword has been the Prize button. The Prize button should only appear on the Cryptic on the Weekend editions. It looks like this latest version was only tested on the news sections!
Must try harder DT
The rest of the app is much as before. The Gallery has been removed, which is a shame. Otherwise the changes seem cosmetic.

Earlier message :- (Finding it VERY frustrating trying to do the puzzles. It seems to want to do its own thing! Very slow at responding; often scrolls on its own; if I exit the app and then return, the puzzle is often either set up in one corner, with only a quarter of it showing, or is miniaturized! Not impressed at all. Plus there is no option any more to engage night vision, which is my preference to view the paper.)
Despite your assurance today (16th Mar) that all is now well, it is not! I deleted and reinstalled the app, and nothing has changed! The puzzles completely seize up if I try to access the help menu.

Although you appear to be able to “download” the paper to read offline, it has a habit of deleting downloads randomly. A download performed at home will quite likely not be available during a morning commute.
Infuriatingly, hours of work on a crossword can suddenly vanish. Last week I did previous Saturday’s crossword from scratch - Four times.
I completed half of today’s crossword after work. When I reopened it after returning home... the box beneath the icon said “download” instead of “read” and sure enough, after downloading it, my answers had vanished.
This is not an “issue” to be “addressed “. It is a major problem which needs to be solved. Quickly, please.

I have read the Telegraph for 61 years and relied on it to give me a global view of the world. Now the Editor seems to be totally in the hands of the Brexiteers and seems to have forgotten the readership that I represent.
I still read it to try to understand what the Brexiteer faction are trying to achieve- to no avail.
The bias is becoming less subtle and more extreme right wing as the time approaches Brexit on 31/10.
I can only imagine it is still owned by the Barclay Brothers who are obviously controlling Telegraph content and direction but seem to be living a life of European Tax efficiency in Monaco and Guernsey. So they are Globalists but working against the UK interests and are probably going to bet and hedge on the collapse of sterling and come in , buy all the bargains , and then encourage a new EU ( Northern Europe countries) and make huge profit on the new regained value of the bankrupt stocks when the dust settles. Meanwhile the normal man in the UK street has had another recession nightmare! Not even wondering what the man same man in the EU will have endured!
We are in the calm before the storm!

We have tried each method available of reading the Telegraph over the years. We have settled quite happily for the time being on subscription to the digital addition plus puzzles. This works out cheaper then buying the paper even with the vouchers. The experience of the digital newspaper is easy to adjust to fairly swiftly and is distinct from flicking through physical pages with some benefits and losses by comparison. My dear wife tells me she prefers the sudoku and the crossword is fine digitally, but please include the general knowledge on a Saturday!
We miss having plenty of newspapers to light fires and wrap broken glass, but taking the recycling out is a breeze now. We are about to have a fortnight in Umbria and hope that the digital edition will follow us there smoothly even if we switch to WTO terms while we are in an Osteria.

IPad Pro plus Apple keyboard Users Beware

The iPad Pro is designed to work with an attached Apple keyboard that also acts as a stand. This only works in landscape mode. Sadly in this mode this app has a very annoying bug. From time to time it becomes very difficult or impossible to scroll down through an article - particularly one with a photograph at the top. Instead it translates the gesture into horizontal scrolling. When scrolling back to the article being read it starts again at the top - necessitating more vertical scrolling and more unintended horizontal scrolling. The frustration mounts quickly. I asked for support and received reassurance they were listening, however the app still behaves in this way for me. Reloading the app made no difference. App seems to be OK for me in portrait orientation - scrolling is normal then. But detaching the keyboard just to use the app is annoying - particularly as some other solution is required for a stand.

When it’s good, it’s very, very etc.

Trouble is, it develops quirks - just had one where, when doing the puzzles, switching pages caused, as found on switching back, completed answers to disappear - only fixed by deleting the app and reinstalling; also, losing login details and demanding a fresh login to continue.
While I know that advertising pays most of the costs of the paper/app, in the paper version, the same advert isn’t repeated, page after page. It is in the app! If the developers think that increases the chance of the adverts being effective, it seems to me that the actual effect is the very opposite. It simply increases the annoyance factor!
That has now changed! While the small, in page ads remain, after the first full download, when the show in full, the full page ads don't load and there's just a message saying that the ad is only available online! While I don't long for ads, that is ridiculous. If I'm not online, just how am I supposed to download the paper? Also, if I am not online after downloading it, I find that it isn't really readable much of the time, anyway. Pages refuse to scroll, freeze, until nearly finished reading with a connection.
There is no search facility. In my household, this would be of immense value, when my wife, reading the paper version refers to an article it is usually difficult to find in the app, with its very different (by necessity) layout.

Much improved..still some scaling issues.

They have clearly been working hard on the reliability. A good bandwidth is necessary for optimum performance. Non-loading advertisements can interrupt the smooth functioning of the app. Latest update introduced an odd scaling issue on the Sudoku and maybe other pages where the header has fallen slightly and the numbers are partially off the bottom of the screen. The sport coverage is excellent, the politics sometimes lack unbiased or deeper critical comment making reading some articles pointless as the news, at the level reported, has often moved on by the time you get to read it here. Perhaps adding more “context” around a story will improve the journalism and a give better longevity as this cannot be reproduced in the short duration of TV or Radio morning slots. For me a “must read” in the mornings and evenings despite my well meant comments.

Missing pieces from the application

Efforts have been made to improve cross referencing, but it is still not good. Other improvements;
1. Page swiping could be more reliable. There is a need to do nothing for a few seconds to allow the swipe to reset.
2. It would be nice to have an index to show which pages one has already read.
3. A back button would be nice particularly after using a link.
4. Review formating text when a larger font is selected. The lists of items on the left always exceeds the space available and does not scroll.
5. A search function should be implemented. There is nothing more annoying than knowing that you have read an article, want to show it to your partner and not being able to find it again.
6. Sometimes a page has a missing section. In order to reload it is necessary to go to another page and back then usually the whole page can be read - still occurs after reinstall (see 8 below).
7. The app takes too much power. To read the whole paper would consume more than the whole battery.
8. The app is not immune from locking up and causing the iPad to have to be restarted - this has gone away since a complete wipe clean of my iPad and reinstall everything from scratch. The problem still exists. On slower iPads it is necessary to wait up to 30 secs before scrolling a complex page.

Do the adverts irate you?

The latest version introduced full screen video advertisements that appear unprompted when reading an article. These seem to be linked to a static advert further down the page.
Turn on Flight Mode (or disable WiFi) to avoid adverts whilst reading articles in the Telegraph app. Adverts seem to be dynamic content that is read from the internet immediately before it is displayed. This makes the app slow to respond when you have poor network access. It consumes your mobile data bandwidth. And it interferes with your use of the app to read and absorb the news content you have paid for.
I have written to The Telegraph about this. The appear to be trialling the behaviour and monitoring feedback. I will be using Flight Mode from now on.

Absolutely Terrible

I have had and paid for a subscription on this app for years. Since the last update it has been virtually unusable. It shows a contempt for its readers that I do not understand. The stuttering appears to be a result of advertising. How can this be necessary in the electronic version which has minimal distribution cost when the paper version is free of such advertising? I have cancelled my subscription and I doubt anything could change my mind. What are you people playing at? If you continue down this road the paper will fold. Why not reduce advertising, increase quality and reward those who take up the minimal cost version with a decent rag. Trying to jump on the advertising bandwagon will kill it. Reduce distribution overheads, pay writers more and go to the highest denominator that your readership share. That is excellent reporting, at a cost. Failing which you join the general melee which so far you have against all odds avoided.

It’s fine, when it works...

I thought I would try this out using the free 30-day subscription. I like the content, the format and the overall translation from a printed page to a screen.
However, there are problems. I’m amazed that annoying self-advertising ads appear in the middle of the articles. They are even more annoying because of the use of basic animation which drags your eye away from what you are reading. Why do we need these? If you’re paying to read this surely you should be able to turn these off as they distract from the primary purpose of the app. Then of course, there is the performance. I have an iPad Pro, and this app will start to slow down and become sluggish whilst using it, usually as a prelude to a crash. Ironically, you can see the crash coming as the annoying ads slow down themselves!
Quite often the app will simply crash with no warning at all, so clearly something isn’t right.
Overall I would consider paying to use this. Not at the moment, though. The countdown to the end of my free subscription has begun...

Great when it works as it should

I have had this app from the beginning and have experienced the odd annoyance on occasions, anything from not downloading automatically to having missing photographs that then cause it to crash before re downloading correctly. Even with the various updates these can still happen. On the bright side it's great to be able to read the paper first thing in the morning in bed without either getting dirty hands from newsprint or needing a light on should my husband still be sleeping. It is disappointing that not all stories are online. I especially like the photo galleries and being able to go back and re read news of interest again without the need to look through paper!
Since the last update the paper has crashed at least once every day. I'm also getting corrupted pages, writing appears over pictures, and some articles are impossible to read at all, on the bright side some of the adverts don't load either.
It’s now February 2018 and this app has got to the point where women the paper does automatically download it then crashes repeatedly, up to six times a day, I’ve tried deleting and reloading but nothing helps, I’m wondering if I’m the only person experiencing this problem, I keep waiting for an update.
