Description

Dark Sky offers hyperlocal weather information. With down-to-the-minute forecasts, you’ll know exactly when the rain will start or stop — right where you’re standing. (It’s like magic.)
YOUR WEATHER, DOWN TO THE MINUTE
Dark Sky delivers forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-by-minute predictions for the next hour and hour-by-hour forecasts for the next week.
BEAUTIFUL WEATHER ANIMATIONS
The same technology that powers Dark Sky’s predictions also allows us to make beautifully smooth radar animations. These animations show you the path of the storm, including how it moved up to now and where it’s going next.
NOTIFICATIONS
Dark Sky comes with advanced notification options. Receive up-to-the-minute alerts before it starts raining at your exact location, get notified of severe weather alerts (for events such as thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes etc.) or even create your own custom notifications covering the next 24 hours for things such as temperature, wind, precipitation and more. Dark Sky will tell you what you need to know, when you need to know it.
WIDGET
The Dark Sky widget tells you at a glance what’s going to happen in the next hour or the next week, so you don’t even have to unlock your phone to quickly check the weather before going out.
TIME MACHINE
Explore weather in the past or future. Choose a date and see historical weather data or future predictions based on seasonal averages.
APPLE WATCH
Dark Sky looks great on your wrist. Get notifications and view the weather for the next week with the Dark Sky app built for Apple Watch.
Dark Sky is available in the US, UK and Ireland.

The app has a great UI. They visualisations are useful and showcase parameter that are more interesting to the user.
The problem is that the service, which many always boast as being accurate, is not actually so accurate. Not nearly enough to actually rely on it. I use it as a guideline, acknowledging that there’s a good chance the weather will differ.
That being said it is accurate at least most of the times, which makes it handy to have; other weather apps I’ve tried do suffer from the same issue.

So I’ve been in Paris and Scotland over the last few days and the radar was unavailable in both. Still is. This is clearly not a local issue but can’t find any info on it. Good quick way of finding out how the weather’s doing. Find myself disappointed. Got this app because i wanted the time machine feature to see how weather conditions were in the past. There is no time machine on iOS app and if there is, i can’t figure it out. The app description says there is. I wrote to the developer on a few occasions asking them for help as i am a blind person who uses voiceover and may be missing something to be fair. The developer has never got back to me. That’s rude specially when i paid for the app. Would like to know for definite if the time machine is available on the app and if it is, how do i use it. If i could use that feature i wouldn’t hesitate giving this app 5 stars as it’s so accurate. As it is, i give it 3. Hope someone from apple or whoever, sees this review and responds to me to tell me about the time machine feature.

Edit: Now the live precipitation radar is consistently wrong too.
The live precipitation radar is pretty much the only reason I open this app. It is a tedious multitap to work out what the weather is going to be. So much screen real estate is wasted providing a graph of one metric. If you want the weather at a glance, look elsewhere.

Notifications arrive too late.

Version 6.8.6
I have persisted with this app for over a year now. The interface is nice, the local warnings are interesting but sadly the weather information is next to useless. This app may work in the mid west USA or somewhere but on the east coast of the UK it just doesn’t. The forecasts for the days ahead constantly change making any plans based on the weather null and void and when the day in question arrives the forecast is wrong anyway, as I type this it says the weather is ‘clear’ for the next couple of hours when in fact it’s wall to wall cloud cover. Yesterday on another ‘clear’ period it rained. I have constantly supplied weather reports via the app but I now assume these are ignored and I’m wasting my time.
I’m afraid it’s back to the Met Office app for me with all its clunky interfaces.

Version 6.8.6
This is my go-to app for weather forecasts. I am a biker, so I try to prepare for what seems to be in my weather future. I have had this app for a few years. It looks great. It’s easy to use. It has many parameters. It will give you the expectation of an hour-by-hour weather prediction. It’s main problem is that it really cannot accurately predict the UK weather much more than an hour ahead. However, it will give you forensic detail on what is happening now (negating the need for windows at your location). It will do the same for past weather. I still refer to it, but nowadays that’s more in hope than expectation. Probably brilliant for weather geeks. Not so much for bikers.

Quite good, but…

Version 6.8.6
I like the overall feel of the app, but feel it misses the major opportunity to be really useful, but over-focussing on the past & the now, with less emphasis on the next 12 hours, which is surely the most common weather question for most people - not so much will it rain in the next 10 mins, but more this afternoon/tomorrow etc. The rain radar animation is great & seems accurate, but please forecast it further ahead than one hour. Also, the colour scale for rain intensity needs to be simplified - there is red at both ends of the scale making it confused, will it be red as in moderate rain or red as in ‘super’ extreme, beyond white for extreme? Overall, not a bad app & accuracy appears good so far, but could be made better & more user-friendly

Map is bad

Version 6.8.6
The app is great for seeing what the weather will be like, but the map is poor. First you get a timeline that seems to run off the screen, and 80% of it is in the past, so you only see the next hour. If you play it the past bit seems to not work any way. You can see more future if you zoom out a huge amount, and then you get the other extreme time-wise as well, a very coarse scale where a whole day is a few mm. There is no happy medium where you can play a local map for the next few hours. The Weather and Radar app is better for that. Another fault is there are Feels Like buttons but they don’t work.

Accuracy is down the toilet with temp and wind these days. WeatherPro which is pretty much a dead duck is way more accurate.
Old review:
What makes an app great is devs who listen and respond to feedback. So far zero response over a year. 2020 - Always great but can we add Wind Gust to the notification options please for predicting good drone flying weather. Also would still like to see cloud cover notification too for astronomy. Old review: Thank you for this amazing product! One wish. Can custom notifications include Cloud cover. Because sometimes you might want to do some astronomy in the evening and clouds are a huge problem in the UK. Or during the day you want to make a video and clouds ruin it. Would be good to notify if X < > % over next 4 hours. That way you can do an alert for morning or evening. Thanks!

Ah, spring and autumn uk showers. What do you think - Shall I take the dog out? Will I need a brolly and waterproofs? When grey clouds are barrelling in off the Atlantic and it’s chucking it down in one village but dry in the next, Dark Sky is spot on for pinpointing breaks in the rain - the notifications give just enough of a ‘heads up’ to grab boots, coat and dog lead and be ready for the off. Perhaps not the app for forecasting/guessing whether it will be sunny at the weekend (although it might well be good at that) but if, like me, you just need a clear sixty minutes to take a very shaggy dog for a walk, this app is spot on and worth every penny.

Really?

I’m giving only 1 star due to my initial experience with the app. I live in Japan and bought the app due to all of the positive reviews. There were many people saying how good the app worked for their area and that the forecast was extremely accurate, or as the description says ‘hyper local’ weather information. This morning when I first opened the app it said that it was currently overcast with a 25% chance of rain later in the day...it has been snowing here for the last 48 hours non-stop 🤔. Also, there is no radar coverage on the main forecast screen, not sure if this is just because I am in Japan, but either way it’s not exactly what I was expecting.
The app looks nice enough and there is some information that is kind of accurate but £3.99 is a lot of money when windy and snow-forecast apps are free, more accurate and give more information, such as cloud coverage etc (windy not snow-forecast)
I am going to continue using the app and if my opinions change I will update the review but for now I would say don’t waste your money, get something free that is more useful

Doesn’t work in my area

This app is missold. It claims “Dark Sky is able to create hyperlocal forecasts telling you down to the minute when it will rain in your area”, but when I open it, the hyper local forecast is missing and the map which dominates 75% of the main screen area is blank.
I didn’t spend £3.99 on a weather app simply to be told “Next hour:Unavailable (no radar coverage)”. No doubt those who developed this app live in an area with wonderful weather radar coverage and can’t conceive of anyone living somewhere more rural where their app doesn’t work. Developing an app which depends on third party data feeds and which provides an awful user experience if someone is outside a coverage zone is only ok if your marketing makes it clear that it doesn’t work everywhere and provides a coverage checker people can use BEFORE they waste their time and money.
I’m off to get this app refunded, if necessary via a credit card chargeback if Apple will not refund it through the App Store receipt “report a problem” link.

Very Accurate but with a couple of glitches.

I can’t fault the accuracy of rain prediction, it’s absolutely spot on. Plus all the other data relating to the forecast is excellent.
However the notifications system needs more work. The app likes to have access to your location all the time, not just when using the app. For this privilege I would expect it to auto chance my location and also auto change the area for which it is providing notifications (when this is set to “current location”, which it is) . Not on my phone. Was getting notifications fine for the area of my place of work, went home, didn’t open the app and continued to get notifications for my place of work for the rest of the evening up until I physically went into the app.
Something clearly not updating. Can we sort that Dark Sky. Then you can have the last star from me.

Great!

Too (London snapper) not really sure what you want? The weather is an act of god! Which means it will only predictable up to a point, and as an act of God is not predictable at all..
Even stating weather warnings yourself and stepping into a warning when be warned is amazing, so pretty pointless grumbling over something nobody has any control over!
Your statement is like complaining when a bus or train is late, there response would be it’s approx time not exact time, because again an act of god stoops in for whatever reason so never exact.
Getting back to Darksky “amazing” is all I can say, can’t be as pedantic as some people but reading you are joining Apple and the app will now be short lived didn’t thrill me, and will be VERY SAD, too no longer use or see the app and I applaud all the people who made this app and the great dedication you delivered to us and it’s a shame other Apps don’t follow in your dedication to fact and customer focus you have delivered and you have delivered well thank you..

Have been using Dark Sky with ever increasing frequency so my wife can accurately time when to, or not to put the washing out. Must be saving money as the tumble dryer is now seldom used. Also used for planning BBQs and garden get togethers during lockdown. The easy to understand and quickly assimilate information displays of temperatures, probability of rain, wind speeds etc. really help.
Would be great if local weather conditions data could be collected via all our smart devices to further increase to accuracy. Similar to that achieved for travel information on say Google Maps.

Great, but can we customise just a little?

Have used this app for years and always found it to be pretty much accurate to within minutes. Best weather app out there IMO. Just be brilliant if you could rearrange the blue buttons to show rain/wind/barometer. I need to know the wind direction for the days ahead and have to keep scrolling and selecting for each day.
Perhaps make the buttons sticky so if I click wind direction, it displays that for future days or let us rearrange buttons so it’s easy to click (say) temp/wind/rain% as the first 3 buttons.
Keep up the great work

I have had this app for years now and it WAS incredible...... it would notify me of impending rain, literally minutes before it started and the accuracy was fantastic.
But then, for some reason, Apple got involved..... now it is rubbish - most days it can’t even get the cloud cover right! Today is the hottest day of the year so far - blue skies as far as the eye can see. Yet this app is telling me it’s overcast or cloudy for the whole day!! We got caught in a shower while dog walking the other day - because the app failed to alert us of rain (something it always did with precision before).
So, with Apple involvement this app will sadly be consigned to the bin because it no longer works and repeated emails for help have been ignored.
Such a shame, it used to be brilliant

I really like this app - it’s generally accurate, as good as anything else I’ve used anyway. Their data privacy policy is more robust than other apps out there.
An improvement that could be made is the reporting of cloud cover / clear weather. The app uses shades of grey to report clear/partly cloudy/mostly cloudy skies. Ultimately this means you get a wall of grey throughout the day which seems off when you look outside and you’ve got bright sunshine and almost no cloud cover. When you look at the cloud cover % you can see the app is correct, but it’s colour scheme gives the wrong impression in my opinion.

This is a very informative and accurate weather app and I would rate it a 5* if it just had 2 more features. The 1st one been pollen count for people like myself that have bad hay fever through the year. It would be a nice feature even if it just said low, medium or high as a suggestion. And the 2nd feature would be pollution forecast for the crowded cities like London or Hong-kong as an example it would be a good indication to see what the pollution outside would be for if you need a mask. If these 2 features were preset or to be added I would love to change this from a 3* to a 5* as like I said this app is very powerful and now that Apple has bought it it will be interesting to see where this app goes :)

Inaccurate and imprecise.

Given that it’s £3.99 for this app you’d expect it to be accurate more than 80% of the time given the amount of free information around that IS accurate.
Also there is no cloud cover on the chart, and the grading of the temperature colour (the difference in colour per degree) is so small that you get very little definition outside of global or contextual perspective. Sure, I can see from the colours that it’s colder in the Arctic than it is in the U.K., but across England, there’s no difference in the colour, so it basically useless. I was hoping it would be able to show me on a map of London the different temperatures with a colour map, given the number of micro climates in London this would be a useful feature, and given the data available one that is not hard to implement. A shame this app falls short of a useful mark. Essentially, a waste of memory.

I’ve tried a few (believe me) and this is by far the most easy to use and -more importantly- accurate weather app you can get. On a recent holiday to Florida (where it rains a lot) the rain alerts were accurate to within a couple of minutes and were consistent every time eg “light rain starting in 7 minutes, stopping 15 minutes later”. Even better news is the fact that Apple have recently acquired the company so I’m sure that will bring even greater integration into iOS. Well done devs!

OK but needs to be better.

This is an OK app but is not accurate, I realise the weather is unpredictable but sometimes the ranges (highs to lows for the day are inaccurate especially the 'feels like' as that never really varies from the main temp reading when in reality it is usually MUCH hotter, perhaps some adjustments need to be made for living in huge cities like London, wind factor etc? ). I would also LOVE to see a POLLEN COUNT for even just the local area, and maybe a bit more detailing in the maps even if just again in the local area. I would still recommend it as it seems to be the best of the bunch.
At the moment Dark Sky says it is 24° but my Apple watch and house thermometer both say 27°! Go figure! Now that Apple have nabbed it, wonder how long before the raking in of money starts?!
They have a habit of taking popular apps for EVERYONE and making them for the better off only. Enjoy the cash, developer.

So good, Apple bought the company ...
I have used Dark Sky almost since it started in the UK. It is consistently the most accurate app in a notoriously difficult-to-predict environment. It is only stated that it works in the UK, US and Ireland, so why reviewers mark it down outside those countries is kinda weird. Other apps have the backing of serious computational power (petaflop computers in liquid-cooled data centres) and they never get it right. This has been, consistently, the most accurate app since I loaded it. Love it - even if it does rain a lot. The U.K. Is nearly always wet, it is just nice to know how wet we will get and how warm the rain is in summer.

I recently acquired an iPhone XS, one of the first apps I downloaded on this phone was Dark sky. By far a must have because it’s pretty much dead accurate, has notification settings that can let you know when it’s about to rain, stop raining, etc. I find the rain notifications and next-hour-expectancy are correct 99% of the time and serves me very well. Would recommend to anyone.
As for suggestions perhaps more depth could be put into future weather predictions, because of this I usually tend to have multiple weather apps on my phone with others being used for checking weather weeks in advance. (I’m aware weather predictions change but it’s nice to have the ability to estimate.) Thanks for bringing such a fantastic real-time weather app!

Save yourselves some money and get the Accuweather app. I was a loyal fan of AW, but decided to switch it up a bit and purchased this app. Big mistake. The interface is inferior, I would even say boring, but I was intrigued by the notification options. Switched on the one which was supposed to inform me if it was going to rain during the day. Turns out, it will only notify you at a certain point during the day if it’s going to rain throughout the whole day. What is the point of having a notification option, if it is connected to a specific time of the day that you have to set?? If that’s the case, I could manually open the app and check the weather at, say, 10 am every day, that completely defeats the purpose of the notification option. Not to mention the fact that it gave me the option to notify me minutes before it started raining. Have been using this app for a month, not a single notification has been received. How is this app the editor’s choice is beyond me. Switched back to Accuweather for good today.

Excellent sort term forecast

I love this app for its short term forecast, especially that for rain, which has improved immeasurably over the years I’ve used it. I’ve quite regularly had warnings of rain, looked out the window and thought “not it’s not”, only to go outside and find a light drizzle, and I still can’t quite get used to having a rain warning literally are the first drops hit me.
For the longer term, it’s not bad at telling you ‘what’ weather will arrive, but not great at the ‘when’ bit, something that seems to be shared by most UK weather apps except the Met Office. It’s temperature predictions are often especially fanciful, although sometimes useful as ‘worst case’ predictions.
The interface however is outstanding in my opinion, presenting a staggering range of data with a clarity most apps can barely even aspire to, especially after the new interface from earlier in the year. The rain radar is brilliantly laid out, easy to use, and probably the best short to mid term prediction tool for rain since casting an experienced eye on the sky.
The watch app, however, which got off to a good start, could do with a bit of an update, especially for the newer WatchOS versions.
The developers are always updating and tinkering, mainly it seems for the better, which isn’t always the case with many apps, and should be applauded for doing so without continual demands for cash.
Overall, an excellent app that can be relied on if you know it’s limitations.

I’ve used Dark Sky for many years now and it has been the best app purchase I’ve ever made. The app gives you an up-to-the-minute warning of weather. I was just out walking my dog and got the notification on my Apple Watch warning me it was going to rain in 5 minutes; so I quickly got to shelter and five minutes later it rained, then I pulled out my iPhone and got the detailed forecast (including the exact timing it was predicted to stop: which was correct!). From that little anecdote, I hope you can see the amazing usefulness of this app and why it’s well worth it for the hyperlocal accuracy and the ability to report weather to crowdsource the forecast!

Have been using dark sky for years but the accuracy just seems to have been lost. I can’t count how many times in the last 6 months it’s not given rain warnings, given a warning 30 minutes after it started, said it’s about to stop raining when it doesn’t. It’s no more accurate than using the Apple weather app and the notifications are nothing more than an annoyance now.
The Apple Watch complication seems pretty buggy too and only displays the temperature in Fahrenheit when the app is set to degrees, maybe I’m missing a setting but it’s not clear how to change the default on the watch.
It’s a shame really as the interface redesign is a huge improvement over the old one, but the accuracy is no better than any of the free weather apps out there.

I’ve been using this app for around 15 months now and it has become the default reference when I’m planning around the weather. I’ve found the local forecasts to be pretty accurate. I really like their widget and I get all the information I need to plan my day or excursions. There is an option to report in weather so they can improve their service if necessary and I like the different notifications and summaries that are produced. The one hour look-ahead for rain is really useful in the UK if you do much in the outdoors. The satellite rain radar is okay but I think the “Home and Dry” app does this aspect a little better and is easier to read; however I’ve noticed the Dark Sky team are regularly improving their offering so I suspect they’ll catch up sometime.
Overall a really useful and informative app and one I expect to use for years to come.

I know changing a design will always cause some kind of backlash; some people just don’t like change. I’m not one of those people.
However, even after giving it quite some time to get used to, I just don’t like this app anymore after it’s been redesigned. It’s become very difficult to understand. No idea where the graph of rain over the next hour has gone, which was the most important bit of information for me. The black circles, in my opinion, don’t do a good job of displaying how likely rain is. I think it’s because they’re all proportioned relative to the highest amount. That makes sense for temperature but for something that’s percentage based it’s easier to understand if the bottom of the scale is 0% and the top is 100%.

Not sure whose idea it was to have a permanent mini map at top of the screen with no option to turn it off. But it is really an eyesore for someone who doesn’t want to see where they are from a satellite. If you have to have it there at least allow us to turn it off if we not like it. I mean why have a mini map when you have already got a whole section dedicated to the map already??
Also it would be nice to know if the updated app has stopped working on Apple Watch Series 0 (original). Not everyone has upgraded to latest watch but sad to see the support has stopped for this watch. The app doesn’t even open and work on the apple watch original anymore.

Disappointed Developer
 –
2018-10-15
While I appreciate all of the hard work this app’s developers have put into overhauling it, a noticeable regression has crept in which makes the app a lot more of a pain to use: instead of defaulting to check the local weather, it looks up some the weather for some address in New York City (Manhattan to be precise), this despite my not even living in the USA and having no interest whatsoever in how the weather might currently be over Manhattan. I would much rather have reported this bug directly through the app, but here again the developers have committed a major oversight, by not providing a convenient means for reporting bugs which have nothing to do with the accuracy of weather forecasts.

Sept 2018 edited review below.
Hate the new UI it looks cheap and nasty why oh why did somebody think this was a good idea, since last update notifications are broken again and the Watch constantly displays a different temp to what’s being displayed on the iPhone app!! Please sort this out!!
————————————————————
So after 3 months of nothing, the app is working again as it used to! Thank you for the fix but I do think 3 months is a Long time.
I have purchased this App 5 times, once for my devices and because I was so impressed with it, I gifted it too 4 other people, they where also effected by the total lack of notifications, I came so close to demanding a refund from iTunes as I felt ripped off.
I would love to give this a full 5 star review and I would if your customer service actually existed, despite several messages over those three months of nothing, that’s exactly what I got, not even a single response from the developer, and that’s pretty poor if you ask me.
1 star review from December 2017 was : Used to be great but the watch complication displays a different temperature to the watch & iPhone app!!
And with the latest update & newest version of iOS my notifications have stopped working completely despite all settings being double checked, App says no rain but it has been raining for five hours now!! NOT HAPPY!
Please fix this!!

I’ve used this app for many years and it was my go to weather app with a fantastic glanceable overview of the day’s weather, focusing on the metrics I was most interested in (namely temperature and precipitation percentage).
A little while ago the app was re-designed with an entirely new interface. My first impression wasn’t great but I understand that such dramatic visual overhauls require some re-familiarisation and so I’ve lived with the new interface for several weeks. My conclusion at the end of those weeks is that this re-design is terrible with no consideration given for UX and the journeys a user takes through the app.
The interface no longer provides information in a quick visually digestible format and instead requires me to spend time reading each line of information to understand what is being presented, and then use fiddly text buttons to flip to other views and get the other information I’m interested in.
Sadly I’ll have to find myself a new weather app as this terrible update has ruined a previously fantastic experience.
P.S. sorry for not leaving a review when the app was great. If you ever sort this hot mess I’ll be sure to come back and give you the glowing review you previously deserved!

My complaint is that the app does not show any information at all in the watch “complication”. I submitted an earlier review but it seems to have disappeared. Here’s another one. I bought this app on the basis of journalists’ reviews, to replace the Apple weather app which has become useless to me since the very recent disappearance of “time travel”, upon which I relied to scan quickly through forecast weather data, with relevant complications showing the info I wanted. The reviews and screenshots show this app at least displaying current conditions in the complication, and undoubtedly the iphone part of the app is magnificent. But it doesn’t work on the Apple Watch: all it shows is a particularly useless blob which I eventually worked out is the app’s logo. Ugh. I have asked for my money back, but have received no response. Sorry folks: most of my reviews across the board are five-star, but this review route seems to be the only way of providing feedback and I hope getting your attention, hence a zero-star review (well, one star: zero isn’t allowed) for a mis-sold product. (The mis-selling presumably not your fault, you may have simply de-scoped it since the reviews.)

Redesign a let down, location issues

Dark Sky used to be amazing. I recommended it to loads of my friends and family, even gifted it to some of them who were reluctant to part with a few quid. Then the new redesign and update was released. Sigh. I’m all for a redesign, but I just feel this doesn’t hit the spot like it used to. I no longer enjoy using it, finding it less easy to see what I need at a glance. However, I’m sure I’ll adjust over time. What I can’t get over, is the the app thinking I’m at 260 Broadway, New York, NYC. I live in England. Having to refresh the app to get my location is so infuriating. WHY?! I’m sure this’ll be rectified with an update (it hasn’t yet), but as a result, this isn’t a 5 star app anymore. I’ll update my review when things improve.

Downloaded this on the strength of the reviews, and so far I’ve been a little disappointed. Judging from the more recent reviews here the latest redesign seems to have impacted on the app’s quality.
My own experience with it is that it’s a bit frustrating to use. The radar images take a while to load fully, whether I’m on mobile internet or WiFi. There’s often a discrepancy between the radar and the stated forecast – the radar might shown it raining while the forecast below says the chance of precipitation is zero.
Additionally, though I have notifications enabled for rain, it seems to be completely random as to whether they actually appear or not. It’s a neat feature, but largely useless if it doesn’t function reliably. So far its predictions haven’t been great either (certainly no more accurate than other free weather apps), though that might just be the British weather!
Finally, sometimes the app doesn’t update to the current time. On a number of mornings I’ve opened the app to see it still showing me the forecast for the previous evening, and I’ve had to close and reopen it to get it to update.
Overall, I hope that the developers take on board the comments here, because it certainly seems like it was a better app prior to redesign. If the issues above can be ironed out then maybe it’ll improve, but currently I’m considering heading back to the free apps I was using before.

This has become my default weather app and is WELL worth the trivial price.
Seems reasonably accurate but invites criticism BECAUSE one expects it to be VERY accurate BUT can sometimes be slightly off even if more accurate than alternatives would be. Give people the earth and they demand the stars as well.
I am very happy to use the built-in reporting facility to correct the slight mis-forecasts which sometimes occur but there is no feedback as to whether they actually influence the weather model, or how many such “corrections” are needed to have an influence. Also if this does help it could be encouraged by some form of reward score (like Waze) to encourage greater participation.
Minor ?fault? - if one moves from a location with the app in the background its notifications seem to be based on the last place it was opened not on current location until it is re-opened.

Had this app for ages and really loved it. Now the it looks awful, I cannot see easily what is happening and I’m still confused as to what some things mean. Sometimes when I open it after it’s been closed it opens with times form earlier in the day so I have to refresh. Previous version always seemed to be accurate on my location. Now regularly I seem to have moved a quarter of a mile away. Not good, and makes me wonder what else is not accurate that I can’t readily check. Lastly saving of favourites is not good. Please do something about it otherwise I may well be off looking at all the other weather apps out there.

Pretty update at expense of usability.
Latest update presents an empty view, requiring the user to poke about with UI to get some update and actually present data.
I’m sure the high fidelity design treatments looked great on a Mac or zoomed in during a presentation, but not on a 7+ and certainly not in a 5s.
Specifically, the stroke and size and colour of font, white on black, make the single most important data on the screen the single hardest data on the screen to read.
Sideways scrolling the data field text selectors is a bit rubbish too. Not very discoverable and target area feels fiddly.
Also wasting space with the tabs at bottom of the screen. It hides data on screen all the time. So it’s usefulness should match its permanency- but it doesn’t. These nav options simply don’t hold as much value as the data they’re hiding.
I also don’t care about the map at the top. Never use it, so for me, it’s a waste of space parking it there with no option to switch it off.
Adding searched locations is overlong in user steps. You need to find the location (which uses some confusing alternates - type in London and it just gives you England, Great Britain), select it, be brought back out of search to actually view data for that location, then go back into search and drag from recent searches into saved locations.
For me, this release is an example of “pretty” by designer trumping the needs of the user.

Serious problem with new app

2018-08-28
There’s a huge issue with the new app. It doesn’t show when it’s loading information. That means it really often looks broken, has a blank screen or says try again unless you have a fast WiFi connection. The new design is clean and putting more information on the screen is a good idea as it was a nuisance paging back and forth last time. Last comment is the buttons to change section “precipitation, cloud cover, etc. are too hard to use and it’s annoying and fiddly having to scroll to reach cloud cover (for instance). One or two rows of traditional thumb sized buttons with icons and text and no scrolling would be much easier to use and clearer.

Issues with units...again.

UPDATE:
The bug fixes seem to have addressed the units issue I raised. But it still shouldn’t have happened, so four stars for now.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
The new update (6.0) makes some great changes. Colour icons, one inclusive forecast screen and the map is now actually useful. Finally!
However, we’re once again faced with problems concerning units. Granted, you can change the units to suit your region, and they work fine on the iPhone app, but the Watch app always shows Fahrenheit. Again. Just like with the Watch app of old at first launch. These people clearly don’t learn from past mistakes.
You guys do realise that people live outside of the U.S.A. right? And even if you do, how did that get past the testers? It’s a basic function to be able to use the units that you prefer, whether it be on the iPhone or the Watch.
My rating will improve once this is fixed, but given that this isn’t the first time this has happened, I’m beginning to lose trust in the app, so I’m increasingly reluctant to offer a five star rating these days.

I have trusted this app for a long while and it does not disappoint but the sudden, new interface has me looking for an alternative. From a simple, elegant and efficient look that did the job I now have a clip art driven interface no better than any mediocre weather app out there.
The change of interface was unexpected and unannounced to me, did my cyclical ‘update all’ and found it when I first ran the app this morning. The new version did not even had a preamble ‘we made changes, here is what’s new’ screen.
Dislike the new look, dislike that to me there was no warning of change, miss the rain forecast for the next hour. Please hire a proper UX designer, no proud UX person would allow a clip art like icon set to drive one of the most elegant and popular weather apps out there.

This app used to be a great complimentary app to the baked in weather one from apple or other App Store weather app. It’s quick horizontal visual representation of when rain was coming was of fantastic use. This new update has just changed it into another generic weather app of which to be honest there are others just as good or better, it’s lost its uniqueness in one fell update. I think the developers have fallen for thinking that all customer feedback should be listened too or in a possible focus group in rewriting the app they have asked the wrong questions and ended up with a standard weather app. Sticking to the uniqueness of their original vision would have been better I think

I’ve used a number of weather forecasting apps over time with varying degrees of success but the outright winner in terms of accuracy, ease of use and reliability is Dark Sky. I love the way it reports hour by hour from the current time and will give a more general forecast for the coming week.
I also like the way it uses phones to collect data in order to improve accuracy and gives the option to report the status of your local weather conditions to improve things further for others.
I would like the use of a little more colour if desired with blue being cold and red being very hot. Just a thought for possible improvement.

I heard of this app on numerous occasions but I was very sceptical of the feedback as it was getting rather good reviews which is very rare especially when the price is above the norm for weather apps. However I was eventually sold when i noticed a news story about this app also giving it very good reviews, the iOS App Store also showed it as an “Editors Choice” app so I decided to purchase it. I can honestly say it seriously works and on two occasions within an hour of purchasing the app i saw that the weather app was showing participation in a certain amount of time, and sure enough on the two occasions it rained within 10 seconds and it stopped at the time it was suggesting, I’m always with my family doing outside activity days at weekends and this app will probably take over my life so to speak but in a positive way. So trust me its MONEY WELL SPENT

The deal breaking omission for me is that the widget part of the app doesn't display your location - just temperature and weather stats. It's a pretty odd thing to leave out and it hits the app hard in terms of usability. When traveling by train, for example, you can't easily view the name of the town/region you are passing through. More importantly, you can't check that the widget is updating the temperature. I'm guessing that the app doesn't lookup location according to conventional weather station sites but rather uses Apple Maps GPS address location. In terms of other functionality, the notifications are nice. Accuracy is certainly no better than many of the free apps and the satellite predictions project ahead less hours than some other free apps. Had I tried before I bought it, I probably would have passed.

Great app.

I have had this app on 2 devices for a few years now and overall it has been excellent. I use it about 2 or 3 times a day. The hourly forecast is really good and accurate with just the occasional hic-up. We were once in Miami pure wall to wall blue sky and it said rain in 30 mins. We laughed this off then got soaked! There could be improvements on the graphics and maybe the colour coded signs of cloud etc. Sometimes the graph says overcast and the hourly one says rain in 30 mins ! But overall I have not found a better app. Go on download it and see for yourselves I don't think you will be disappointed.

Cons: satellite prediction like so many other weather apps show useless animation of what the weather WAS like.. please someone enlighten me on the usefulness of that? What is the point? The predictive animation only shows 1 hour into the future: again this has very little value especially when considering the met app shows you a good 10hrs of predicted satellite cloud track.
Secondly weather data is only shown on shown at intervals.. for a hyper-local boasting weather tracking app I find this rather hypercritical! Again, other apps can show 1 hr intervals, why can’t this one?
Pros: data, generally is fairly accurate with timely notifications. A simplified UI makes for an easy assessment of the weather situation.

A little embarrassing at times when trying to convince friends and family that this app is reliable... I am mostly referring to the use on my Apple Watch 3.
I’m going to stick with this a little longer to give it more of a chance, however when using the Apple Watch the screen can stay static (if use on watch face / home screen) and stay on ‘rain starting soon’, it can do this with being clear but then it rains....
The watch part of this app needs sharpening up, I did try to email the developer before Christmas but I haven’t heard back (5th January 2018 today’s date).
Otherwise the app on my iPhone works well, but still not spot on, as for instance it said ‘possible rain for 1pm, but 76% chance of rain for 3pm’, there was no rain until late evening around 10pm. But hey ho, sometimes the weather reporter gets this wrong.
So all in all, it’s been good with the iPhone but sluggish with the Apple Watch, I will give it a bit of a chance as the Apple Watch 3 is still fairly new and it may be down to software adjustments... (probably).
But still would like to hear back from Dark Sky via email.

Best Weather App I’ve ever used

‘Dark Sky’ is a fully featured weather App with a very clean User Interface(UI). I like the precipitation alerts which are invariably accurate and the facility to add alerts via editable presets. The graphical displays of precipitation and temperature are excellent but sometimes a little ‘glitchy’ displaying nothing initially but following a few cycles become populated. I would like a predicted animated maps showing weather pattern up to 24 hours in advance (may not be ‘right’ but useful to be able to check a 24 forecast to get a feel for the next day’s expected weather as a picture than as numbers). Good Job!

Really useful App

Only had this app for a week, but it's already proved invaluable. When deciding when to have a BBQ, it predicted rain on the Sunday, which happened, and warm and sunny on the Monday, which also was correct. Our decision, in advance, to have our BBQ on the Monday rather than the Sunday, was therefore perfect. So far the warnings of rain or even drizzle have been spot on. I have had a couple of Met Office weather apps for years, but this is by far the best I have seen so far. Time will tell whether such accuracy will continue over a full year, but so far, so good.
Well, I’ve now used this app for the best part of a year and it has not disappointed at all. Really useful prediction tool, and I can definitely recommend it.

Why has it gone wrong

This app has been amazingly accurate - and useful - for the year or more information have had it (iPhone and iPad).
Then last week it seems like a switch was turned off. The app now doesn't even know what the current weather is doing - still less the hourly forecast I have got so used to.
I'm not talking small differences - the app said unbroken sun all morning: the sky is actually so overcast I don't where the sun is!
This alarming problem has been apparent for quite a few days. I wonder if the source of the data has changed? (Or maybe he/she has gone on holiday?)
It was such a good app - please fix it.
