Office Apps 2021 Review

Version 2.49.1
Have used WP, XL, PPoint and Hotmail/Outlook for years, and they are all very good products. But I have some minor criticisms about some aspects - eg. Recovering from password login problems is clumsy, because the various MS msgs do not identify which user-ID/acct it is referring to - is it the problem mail acct or the alternative (assisting) mail? Why not label the intended acct ID as P (problem) and the other as R (recovery) for example. Also, the failing login advises that a code has been sent to the Recovery acct but after exiting the problem to find your recovery code you cannot get back to the exact problem point again, so have to login afresh and loop around again (unless you have 2 devices and leave the problem device at the login stage, whilst using the 2nd device to obtain the code and then returning to the 1st device to enter the Recovery code. Also, in Teams, sometimes have probs in joining a Teams mtg, if setting sound & video tests and then expecting to join the T meeting. The joining step gets lost or delayed?

Good app but fix this...

What’s the point of pinning files but for you to keep unpinning them every few days?! I pin them for a reason. There’s a few files I use all the time for work. I WANT TO KEEP THEM PINNED!!!!!!! 😡 *** Still not fixed the pinning issue. Bloody stupid automatically unpinning them 🤦🏻‍♂️
30/05/21 Update - Any chance pdfs can be searchable? Other apps allow a search function so can’t be hard to implement.
Apart from the above 2 issues, this app is great. Use it all the time to store loads of work information.

Can’t start a doc on one device and then use it on another without having to email the doc and then upload it to OneDrive.
Chatted 3 times now with support and even though I tell them I’ve done what they have asked previously and IT DIDNT WORK.
They ask me to give it a try. Well I did what they asked this morning and NO IT DIDNT WORK!
Sort it out Microsoft or I find another programme that works better and stop paying you to use it! No good for the work I’m in waste of money!!!

Version 2.48
I like having all of the apps integrated into one but it keeps crashing when I flick between apps making the whole process of using it laborious and the experience is poor. Also, with this app it is not possible to have a PowerPoint and a word document open at the same time which makes transferring creating powerpoints from a word document much more difficult.

Version 2.48
That's what my files look like now because of this stupid app. Everytime I edit something I get a message 'can't upload - someone else is editing this file, please save a copy.' Even though I'm the only person who can edit the file. So I get the office app but that's worse. I was doing my work the app froze (I had saved before it froze) so I closed the app and reopened it but it said save I pressed don't save but it still wouldn't open. So I deleted and reinstalled the app and what do I see? Nothing, the app I saved has been deleted. 3 years of work deleted cos of this stupid app. I'm going to use Google sheets from now on

Version 2.47
This is too clever by half and most of the time it gets it wrong. All the little pops are interruptions and distractions. I have found it very difficult to run two business accounts and a personal account on my iPad. There is a serious learning curve to go up to use it even moderately well. Hate the thought of how intrusive the AI data analysis is and the amount of my personal data it is accessing, never mind the amount of energy it must be burning.

Office documents still don’t open for editing on iPad, but do so on my iPhone. Totally frustrating since I also bought the magic keyboard to allow me to replace my laptop. Do not bank fully on office 355 on iPad If you still depend XL or Word documents. each document needs to be opened by the individual Excel or Word App for editing and docx filed aren’t compatible with words on 365 for iPad. Version 2.46
I have a 365 account & use both Excel daily & Word frequently on my 6th gen iPad. I find the Office app just as good as the individual apps were.
My reservation is with the “long press” pop up. Every time I open a file on either iPad or laptop it replaces my pinned favourite documents in the iPad list. That makes the facility useless as a way of getting to my frequently used files. Having the combined Office app just means that there are more recent file names to replace my favourites.

I now have 15 new copies of the same spreadsheet saved, just to save it. If I try to use the spreadsheet on my Mac I get the locked message. It hangs. It’s buggy. Version 2.45
If you had thoughts of using your Ipad Pro as a work machine, then forget this Office App. There is no control of menus which just pop up and down whenever they feel like it. Many of the buttons you’d expect to see just aren’t there (though some are searchable if you can remember their names). You tap on it with your finger, apple pencil or the cursor and you may either drop the cursor to where you want to edit, or just select a whole raft of text for no apparent reason. I have wasted at least 50% of my time this afternoon just trying to get it to do what you expect it to. Hopeless for anyone who is actually at work rather than writing a letter to their granny.

Version 2.44
I decided to get Office on the app, as I had a new device with an update that supported the app. I thought it would be more stable, and just better, than the online version. However, I was wrong. On the App Store, it say that you can use it on IPad and IPhone, but when I opened the app, it said it’s better recommended for the phone? But I logged on, and I thought it wouldn’t be too bad. But you can’t access ANY of the ‘apps’ - Teams, Word, Excel... . I thought it would save storage and trouble if I downloaded them all together, but no. I still would recommend the individual apps, but this app makes no sense.

I have a Microsoft Office 365 account. This app just installed on my iPhone says I do not. To add insult it asks me to go to the Apple store to buy a new subscription. Shocking. I would recommend this app because it has helped me in school a lot or when my parents go to work it would be an amazing app because you can also find excel PowerPoint and word

Great connectivity, bad interface

Version 2.41
Works seamlessly in connection to my microsoft account, and offers practically every document type stored on my pc to be reached remotely. However, actually making changes appears to be terribly formatted, e.g. sluggish typing and movement around the document.

Version 2.40
My organisation has recently introduced Microsoft office 365 for all staff to engage and maximise the potential the system provides. What an experience, the system is loaded with options - how to use the option is what I am learning. My current challenge is bringing online documents/files into office 365 to work with them within 365. If that can be looked into if not done already, that would be great.

So useful

I love this app, so useful to have the office suite in one single app.
It would be great to have one note too.
I wish we had the same app for the Ipad pro.

One week in and this is starting to look quietly impressive.
Early days so will keep it under review, but there are some excellent improvement on all the Office tips and they are brought together well in o life a tiny bit simpler.

I have a MacBook Air and I would really prefer to have an Office app for my Mac as well. As a student I would need a whole actual office app not all separate apps. I hope this can be made as soon as possible. Hope you read this message microsoft. Thanks 🙏

Not YET compatible with iPad. Works great on iPhone, but on the iPad it displays the same size screen as an iPhone would.
Any update on when an iPad friendly version will be devolved?

Version 2.37
When first downloaded it offers to help download office apps but each time you download one, you will need to close the app and go back in to download the next one, as there is no apparent way to go back to that screen. It is also not designed for an iPad screen and has to scale itself up from an iPhone design? Come on MS sort your act out!

Notes is practically broken

Version 2.37
I use Sticky Notes a lot. I use the native app on Windows 10, the web app on Google Chrome, and this app on iOS. This app's note synchronization is practically broken - the app needs to be constantly force-quitted to get it to sync, when it does sync it doesn't sync all notes and some of them not properly, crashes with certain content, etc. Comparing to the other two apps confirms this. Really needs to be sorted.

Version 2.36.1
Great at first glance, one place for all office but it’s missing key features and software. This can only be used a a file viewer and for annotations and document signing. This gets more confusing when you find it is not supported on iPad it’s just a scaled up terrible looking iPhone app with no Apple Pencil support. Why have an annotation app and document signing app that isn’t supported on iPad and pencil.

Great app however not on iPad

A great app on my iPhone however I use my iPad to work with documents and spreadsheets and the functionality of how it brings all documents together would really benefit on the iPad. Can this be looked into please

Paste special has stopped working

Version 2.36
The latest update (13 April 2020) has caused paste special to stop working. You click the "paste special..." option, and where before it would bring up a second set of options for values, formats etc, now it does nothing.
My spreadsheet is saved in the iCloud drive of the Files app. I closed it on iPad and opened it on iPhone, where it opened an old copy. It then proceeded to upload the old copy to iCloud drive where it overwrote the newer version that had been saved from the iPad.

Needs work...

Version 2.35
Good app overall but still missing some core features to be really productive. The app doesn’t support iOS 13’s 3rd party fonts. I use fonts from Adobe in documents for our business so have to use my Mac for these.
Also, excel and word seem incredibly basic on the iPad considering it’s power and push to be a ‘pro’ machine. This app is a HUGE step back from the desktop versions in terms of functionality and UI. With the new iOS support for google docs on the web it’s hard to justify using these apps for anything really productive.

Alright but I wish you could see emails from the app too. Also I’m confused why you have to pay. I have not yet been asked so I’m confused. Do you just take the money from us at a random point? Does everyone have to pay? Pls help.

Version 2.35
Seems odd that Google Drive is missing when all other cloud storage options are available. My docs are all on Google Drive so I can’t use this.
Update: After the developers got in touch below, I tried the steps they suggested and I can see my files now. Updated to 2 stars.

Better experience!

Version 2.34.1
Wanted to update my previous review but that option isn’t appearing on my iPhone for some reason.
Anyway, I previously reported that I could open password protected Excel files just fine in the new app, however I am then unable to open them in Excel on any desktop. I keep getting a ‘file is corrupted’ response. The ‘open and repair’ fix doesn’t work. I received a developer response asking me to send an email to support. Email sent 2 days ago, but no reply. Not even an auto response.
Now, since the most recent update which supposedly fixes the issue I can’t open the files in the app (encryption error) or on the desktop (corruption error)!!
What a shambles!! I hope help is on the way otherwise that’s 3 huge and complex Excel sheets that need recreating from scratch!!

When it was released a few days ago it was fine. The latest release yesterday said it was to fix an issue with opening password protected files. However, this feature used to work but now no longer works after the fix.

Version 2.34
I store all my files in Dropbox. The Dropbox iOS app acts as a file manager / viewer and when I want to edit a Word document for example it will open in Word from the Dropbox app and then save back to Dropbox. This works fine for me.
With the new Office app installed on my iPhone, if I ask to open a Word document from Dropbox it opens the new Office app instead. This is great since surely I can save space by removing the standalone Word / Excel / PowerPoint apps right??
No.
Without the standalone apps, asking to open a Word document from Dropbox simply prompts me to download the Word app!!!
I don’t get it.
So to save space and get everything in one place etc I’m now using more space than before! Yes I could start with the Office app and browse my Dropbox content but it takes more “clicks” and only compatible content is shown, meaning I have to know the file type of what I’m after in advance.
Which means I need to use the Dropbox app instead. I’m confused.

Needs Apps.

Version 2.34
Great to be able to access all projects in one App but how do you launch & create a new project? Nothing available to allow this. Would’ve expected all Office Apps to be listed on the Home page. Even eventually locating the Apps section, it’s a Get option, not open or launch. Yet, the information & support stated, all existing Apps can be removed (if you choose) to save space. Yet after removal, the user can not create any new project. So not really an all singing, all dancing, space saving all in one service. Which is what’s needed. Also missing is Touch ID for security. Looking forward to the next release, with excitement if these areas are addressed, otherwise it’s not much use.

This new app combines Word, PowerPoint and Excel all in one app and it is amazing. It saves lots of space by only having one app, you can scan documents with ease and it’s useful not having to switch between different apps for different documents! Much better than using different apps, definitely recommend for anyone!
