Firstly the bad news, this ain't The Terminator or Judgement Day!
Secondly the good news! This goes some way to redeem the franchise. Sure it's a little messy in places, there are some questionable plot lines, however it is the best sequel to the first two....by miles.
My advice, watch T1 and T2 then skip the others and watch this, leave your brain in neutral and enjoy.
Not as bad as some would have you believe.

Hits and misses, but still the best Terminator in 25 years

If I could give this a, 3.5 I would.
At the time of writing this, I've only seen this film once, (when it was in cinemas) so I'm going to go on the sort of impression that specific viewing gave me. The worst aspects of this film lie in things such as cliches, lazy acting and vague/unresolved plot points. However, this film did do a lot of things right too, unlike the other more recent entries in the saga. It pays far more respect to the original two movies (instead of just using them as a starting point for more mindless robot v robot action scenes), and sets up a new and unique storyline of its own which deviates from the source material - (once again, unlike T3 and TS, which were just rehashes of "terminators attempt to kill John Connor"). The CGI feats are phenomally well done, and Arnie is as good as can be expected. I could go on, but I'll just leave you with the main pros and cons:
Good: Tries to be unique, visibly more effort put into the plot, great fights scenes and CGI, classic callbacks, just the right amount of humour, and of course, the Governator.
Bad: Still quite cheesy despite redeeming traits, plot points muddied with vague time travel jargon, shabby acting on behalf of our TWO MAIN CHARACTERS (Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney), lack of likeness between the previous and newcoming cast (Yep, looking at you, Emilia and Jai!), sets the ending up for the sequel - which may never be made.

What A Breathtaking Sequel !

I watched the 1st Terminator movie back in the days when I was a kid and have been a fan since then. The 2nd Terminator movie was a jump in technology back then and I loved it too. Since then it was a hard job to watch a better sequel to the Terminator or at least a similar level. I played Terminator games and only liked the iPad latest version. I came across the Terminator Genisys with the 2015 technology and that sounded terrific but I wasn't convinced, and finally the hope beat me to watch it and WOW it worked ! The Terminator Genisys is unbelievably the perfect sequel to the Terminator movie with flying colours I ever imagined ! I recommend this great film to all the Terminator fans ! Watch and enjoy the ride :)

After being disappointed with the recent reboots of Star Wars and Jurassic World, I wasn't holding out much hope for this new Terminator film, especially based on the not so good reviews by the critics. In fact I enjoyed very much - it's fast-paced action, great cast, good plot twists, clever special effects with just the right amount of humour thrown in by Arnie. It you like the alternate timeline plots of the Back to the Future movies, you will love this - really gets you thinking! Watch out for a key part played by Matt Smith (Dr Who!)

I enjoyed it, I did!

Really great Terminator film. Don't read all the bad reviews... I loved all the references to the old films, and the twists and turns. The special effects are cutting edge, and the story line is better than you might think!

A bit boring, actually

Some new special effects and action sequences helped make this film very enjoyable. Decent plot made it far from the poor relative I was worried it might be. Some funny lines from an in form Arnie. So pleased we watched it.

Brilliant movie with Arnie young and older!

An enjoyable movie - albeit a kind of remake of the original first two Terminator movies. Plenty of action with plenty of twists in the story.

When I got home from my grandparents house my parents decided to put Terminator Geniysis on. I'm not really a terminator fan but enjoy watching the films. I watched it and I was amazed by how good this film was and that Kyle Reece had lived 2 lives (or he just remembered his childhood) and that Sarah Connor and Reece Kyle had given birth to John Connor. It did confuse me a little bit but I enjoyed it. If you haven't watched this film I definitely recommend this film

in retreading the franchise they came up with something surprisingly mature. perhaps more subtle than lovers of the earlier episodes would expect. nice though. like it; more of the same and a little bit of something extra.

As a fan of the Terminator series right from the start, I can say this is worthy sequel and a brilliant film in its own right. The effects are amazing and the complex timeline is held together brilliantly.
After the disaster that was terminator salvation, the series is back with a bang and back to its original values. One of the best films I've seen in ages!

I watched this after watching the previous ones back to back. It feels a bit disjointed, almost as if written by someone working of an IMDB description of the previous films. However the acting was good and action sequences worth watching so not as bad for me as some other comments.

I’m a huge Terminator fan. I can also watch the worst movies and actually enjoy them. Never written a review on a movie before but I had to. This was just awful. Terrible storyline. Too much cheesy dialogue. The terminators were crap. If the people who did Scary Movie made a terminator movie, this would be it.

Treat it for what it is, and enjoy.

Thoroughly enjoyed this piece of sic-fi hokum; treat it as entertainment and you won’t be disappointed. Come to it wanting high cinema or a profound message, and you will not find it. The ageing Terminator is dealt with with a certain humour, and Arnie does not pretend to be the action hero.
The flipping bus is the only real howler, but no worse that the flipping truck in The Dark Knight Rises. Amazing how vehicles in the US seem to take to the air so easily.

As a Terminator fan, I was very disappointed. As others have pointed out, the script and plot have been very lazily written. I appreciate this is meant to be a reboot but there are so many errors in the story it's quite farcical.

Just poor in so many ways. I looked up the screenwriting credits to find the writers had no pedigree - it showed in the scenes, stories, plot holes and dialogue. A wasted opportunity. Plain acting, mediocre direction. But the fault lies at the door of the screenplay.

Really bad, Jai Courtney is such a dreadful actor, Arnie is good as usual. Sanfrancisco setting, Golden gate bridge getting trashed - just like San Andreas, Godzilla, blah blah !! Yawn ! If you’ve nothing better to do then worth a rent I guess.

Didn't know what to expect but I was amazed. Arnie's role was just right and the story had a lot of novel elements (as opposed to Terminator 3 which was just a poor replica of #2).

Went into this knowing the last few films in the series were quite frankly rubbish. So didn't expect too much.
Came away from the movie feeling the total opposite! It was enjoyable, and the story was not too bad, in fact it was quite a clever story, a couple rubbish points but hey ho. Ignore what others have been saying it really isn't that bad!!

I couldn’t watch all of it, turned it off less than half way through. I found it very dull. The cast do a good job, no faults there. The only slightly good bits I saw were the bits borrowed from the first two films. I wanted to like this but I value my free time and felt I could be doing something more interesting.

Not brilliant or a complete lemon, in the context of the other Films and TV series, which it more or less respects There is the feeling that they could keep looping through time with further plot twists, forever, but I hope they don’t.

i thought it was a good film and liked it very much . its a shame people put a film down just because they do not like it why rent or buy it then no one forcing you to watch it . if you just want to sit back and watch a good action film with out thinking to much into it then rent it .

The film makes no sense at all. Spoiler alert, the very second Sarah Conner steps foot into the time machine, the future John Conner they spend the whole film fighting... Would not exist!!! Not unless judgement day was postponed the 33 years she just time traveled!!! And Arni at the end?!?! Come on... I hope the writers were fired for that one.

Watched this on a flight and boy was I disappointed. Terrible film....really, really terrible. Plot line poor, acting in places laughable and all the time travel thrown in because they can't spin a good yarn without it. Good to see some hat tips to the older, better movies in the franchise but seriously do not waste your time with this, even if stuck on a plane for 11:30.

Attempts to get clever around time travel produces a film that's difficult to comprehend. Key to the success of the previous films was that there was a direct line to and from the future. What lets this film down is the mish mash of multiple timelines, possible pasts and futures with subtle overlaps that leaves the movie goer scratching their head. In addition, all of the previous films delivered a new cgi experience that was jaw dropping, nothing new here. So with only the plot to work with, a plot that was difficult to follow, the film floundered for me. Worse still was the totally anonymous soundtrack by Hans Zimmer - I thought I was watching Crimson Tide half way through. Hollywood can do a lot lot better than this.

Forget the critics… they just don’t get it.

I heard that this film was confusing, that it wasn’t very good, that the acting was terrible… All lies. I LOVE Emilia Clarke in this film, and her acting is spot on, and I think she is fantastic. The film and it’s plot is something you do have to follow closely, sure, but is not overly complicated if you know the basics of The Terminator story, and is exciting, fast paced, with great twists!
