Description

Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. centers on CIA agent Solo (Man of Steel's Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Kuryakin (The Social Network's Armie Hammer). Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo's only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

Its very entertaining and has a really awesome soundtrack.
Its a good plot, script and cast.
The acting is good. The film was “classy”.
The ending was good - I thought.

I went to see this at the cinema with my family. We all loved it and watched it again when it came out on video. Such a shame there will not be a follow up as we got into the characters.
The newspaper critics when it came out were really harsh and put people off which made me think they may have had another agenda against the director but from now on I ignore the reviews. I nearly missed a brilliant family day out. No film is going to please everyone but the style, the sets, the stunts and the characters should have been given credit. There has been a lack of good films and, ironically, many films the critics have loved but have just been way of from good enough.

Best Spy film ever.

Two words. Armie Hammer.
Also Alicia Vikander as gabby who is stylish and sassy and totally in love with llya.
Favourite scene.…
When solo sits in the van eating, drinking and listening to opera. Whilst llya is being shot at.

Faithful to the feel of the original without fawning to it. A well made modernised movie with good attention to detail in the costumes and gadgets, all felt right. Humorous dialog and good casting of the the characters. Well worth a watch especially if you remember the original classic series.

Not sure what people were expecting from this movie, however, it is quirky and the interactions between the actors is great.
Its one to enjoy and remove any pre-concieved ideas about prior to watching.

This film is terrible. My wife walked out of the room after 15 minutes! I wish I turned it if after the opening scene. Generic and formulaic! The only positive is the cinematography. I will not watch again or any sequel. Save the two hours of your life and avoid The Man From UNCLE.

I am not usually given to writing bad reviews but in this case I will make an exception. How this film appears with four stars in the iTunes store is a complete mystery to me. I found it to be both tedious and boring to watch, even though I watched it to the end to see if it would improve - it didn’t! The whole film has no flavour of the original series, none of the charm or originality, and the use of the dreaded “shaky cam” in the action scenes just makes things worse. Very poor indeed.

What a fun film

The first 20 minutes were a little slow, but this film just gets better & better. By the end, I wanted to watch the sequel, straight away. Brilliant characters, great retro feel and smooth sound track. This is going to be a great franchise, as long as they can keep the same actors together. The only film that I have seen, in the last 6 months, that is better than this, is Spectre. This is high praise, indeed...

The marketing sucked

This movie is satire (the opening music is the give away, surely) with a decent budget and beautiful cinematography, paying tribute to the style and sarcasm of European movies of the 60s (think Jules et Jim, The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin, Blowup, The Italian Job, La Dolce Vita). You will either love it or you will hate it. It should have been marketed as a subversive romp like SPY as it has a surprisingly refreshing and fun message; the two competent action stars, however likeable or unlikeable, run around around continually screwing everything up with minimal insight because their different versions of being aggressively macho make them terrible spies (like how how everyone in the world seems to know who Ethan Hunt and James Bond are by now). Shame that it was likely to be one of the few properly-financed action-spy franchises with a non-disposable female lead, played wonderfully by Alicia Vikander, because it would have been really fun to follow the continued development of her character.

If you didn’t like it first time - watch it again!

I don’t like cold war spy or retro style movies and was expecting something like Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy which I hated, so wasn’t really paying attention when my husband put it on.
The day after I put it on again whilst wrapping presents and noticed that it’s very funny and cleverly made in spite of a weak story line. Have now watched it 3 times and it got better every time!
Nicely done, Guy Ritchie!

Typical of a lot of movies today, they have smart unique directing style and amazing cinematography but the story and character development is so non existent that you sometimes forget the actual purpose of the movie.

The acting was good, as was the cinematography.
But the scripting and storytelling was poor.
A tedious film best avoided

Have no doubt this is one of the best movies of 2015. The detail, style, script, sets and locations are perfectly sourced and wonderfully utilised. It brings a whole new meaning to a too long dormant franchise and justifiably deserves lavish praise. The actors are superb, the script lively and entertaining, villains masterful and different. Superbly witty, funny and beautiful to watch. It makes Bond films look dated and trashy. For me this is going first wth The Martian as best film of the year. Please make a sequel!

Yawn. Boring, boring, boring.

Gave up half way through - couldn't finish it I was so bored.
The early scenes of the escape from East Germany were good and left me to hope for much, but after that the fizzle just went out of it. I just found each scene more boring than the last, and didn't feel anything for the characters - it all just felt so wooden and...."meh"
Really disappointing.

Grand entertainment.

What a hoot. Fans of the old series and new viewers alike will love this set-in-the-sixties spy movie. Filled with humour it doesn’t take itself seriously at all and sets up a team that could rival the Mission Impossible franchise should this first movie deliver a commercial success. I really enjoyed it and it kept my family, of all ages, entertained brilliantly on Christmas afternoon. Recommended.

A few negative reviews on here that basically leaves you wondering if the reviewers were watching the same film. I found this a lot of fun, it certainly doesn’t take itself too seriously and there lies the charm. It had all the right ingredients for an old fashioned spy movie. Great locations, good dialogue and good acting. The chemistry between the lead actors was there for all to see. Watch it, buy it, you won’t be disappointed.

Good plot, simple but brilliantly acted - great locations, staging and soundtrack. Pace is on form and movie is over what feels very quick as its so enjoyable to watch. If it spawns a sequel will look forward to it. Makes me want to be living in the swinging sixties - but not in a tacky Austin powers way.

Box office flop? Well yes it was.....so while not the greatest film made; by a long way - I gave 4* 'cause I thoroughly enjoyed it. Pure hokum escapism, fun, some neat car chases and rather stereo typical tongue in cheek likeable characters. It left me wanting to see them again.....alas that will not be happening. Still leave your brain elsewhere get a comfy sofa a beer or a glass of wine or two and enjoy.

Hmmm....it's ok, but I found myself easily distracted whilst watching it. In other words did'nt hold my attention. Not a patch on Spectre. How can it even be compared to Mr Bond and his high jinks? I can understand where Mr Ritchie was going with this, it was different, but average.

Smooth and well acted!

Really liked this film (Arnie hammer was great!)
Saw the negative critic reviews so left this to rental, definitely deserved more life than it got in the cinema. Nicely acted, good script... could've been edgier. Not as good as mission impossible this year. Waaaay better than bland boring bond!!
