I Like Benicito Del Toro so I always try to see his movies. This one it doesn't dissappoint in terms of atrezzo and atmosphere.... viaully is great to watch. The rest, story, plot and so is just ok. Good enough for not to be bored, not the greatest plot ever but overall is a good movie.
I enjoyed it.

gorgeous sets and clothes. Preposterous setting; no coherent story and living in a house in Cumbria in the middle of winter with a large hole in the roof and not freezing - what?
Not scary in the least
Mining for red clay in Cumberland and then having vats of the stuff in the basement?
not economically viable to mine stuff for which there is no market and no way of getting it to market!
Perhaps Americans think this is how people live in Cumberland

I wanted to watch the film for the mystery and horror it shows in the trailer. Some intricate CGI, and amazing setting, and I loved the addition of red clay like blood. There were a few 'cover-your-ears' moments and some very unexpected violent scenes, and all this saved my rating from one-star review.
The movie itself is what let me down. There was no mystery or true meaning behind what happened, and it seemed very rushed. It was less like a film and more 'look, a haunted house!' A good film can't be summarised in a few words, but this one can: He died, scary house, crazy people.

Absolute Rubbish

This is a massive disappointment - horribly designed and written and performed and directed and more than anything it is utterly boring. No idea what Del Toro or anyone else involved in this film were thinking. I honestly recommend that you avoid this film. It is a waste of time. And I say that as a massive horror fan and a fan of Del Toro. This really is terrible.

If you thought a horror, I use this term loosely with this film, couldn't be beautiful you need to watch this film. Wonderfully shot, amazing sets and costumes. Great story. Highly recommended

The trailer makes it look scarey and exciting, however the actual film is slow, drawn out, poorly acted and just dull. Really wouldn't rent this film had I known, since it is definitely made for TV.

This is exactly the sort of film that can destroy even successful actors’ careers. Linda Wasikowska is the best thing in it, next to the bouncing red ball, but even she is not safe. The references to Bluebeard’s Castle and Elektra are especially cringe-worthy. This really is a horror fan’s Heaven’s Gate… I have to give it one star, but it really deserves ten black holes...

Although impeccably made and visually impressive, I found this movie quite slow and predictable. I was waiting for the stunning revelation at the end, but there was none. Could have been much better.

It looks good (the CGI does let it down) but it seems all in vain? The plot was limp, the twists were obvious, the ending was flat and there was no real atmosphere, character development or tension at all - for what tries to pass off as a ghost film it's a real flop. Or is it a romance? Drama? Horror? Just a confused mess - Sadly disappointed as I hoped for more!

Disturbing and haunting

If the purpose of a film is to make you think about the themes long past the end credits, then this succeeds. Yes there's ghosts and everything else you could want in the Gothic Horror genre; but the increasingly unsettling storyline leaves you with a number of things, that are disturbing on a number of levels.
Hiddleston and Chastain do a fantastic job on their characters, and Wasikowska makes the best of hers. The CGI is excellent, and the horror scenes (while appropriately gory) are not gratuitous, and are sparingly applied.
Each scene is a masterpiece in cinematography and as a result, the film is beautifully atmospheric and worth watching on the strength of this alone.

Beautiful but wheres the…...

Beautiful cinematography and characters but wheres that certain something. Not a bad film but could have been so much more just missing that vital spark and not really sure what genre it wants to be.

This is a great classic Gothic horror film - but be warned, the depictions of violent injury are horribly realistic!

A curious and beautifully constructed horror film. The artwork, costumes and cinematography are stunningly beautiful and the mysterious story builds gradually.
I actually saw this at the cinema and the the use of costume, colour and detail was moving and breathtaking, this film is a work of art.
I would buy this on blu ray as you have to see and feel the impact of the visual artwork in hd: the colour and detail; to really appreciate this film.
Some horror films nowadays go for constant jumps and bad, cheap cgi to scare you. This builds creepily, with subtle use of high quality cgi and "real" special effects and scares you with a build up of tension, although there are some jumps and surprising twists.
If you appreciate beautiful cinematography and gothic horror this is for you.

Gorgeous visuals and not much else

I'd like to start my Crimson Peak review by saying that I love Guillermo del Toro. I love the man with a passion. I think he has very interesting ideas especially when it comes to creatures and monsters. But that's that. Don't get me wrong Crimson Peak once again shows off del Toro's talent for art direction the movie is gorgeous to look at and in general very atmospheric. I was really looking forward to this feature and was extremely disappointed to see that the Master making the same mistakes over and over again when he works on his personal projects namely he cannot make up his mind what is the movie he actually want to make. The madly over hyped Pan's labyrinth is a great example. If you remove the fantasy element from the story the movie still works. There is absolutely no reason for the ghosts or monsters to be at present within the movie apart from del Toro's love for them. To be fair if you have seen one of del Toro's movies (I mean his personal work) you have seen them all.
Tom Hiddleston is amazing as usual and Jessica Chastain is absolutely fantastic in her role. Mia Wasikowska is okay but she has not much to work with. Her character has no ark she doesn't go anywhere she I guess just represents the audience. And finally the weakest link is without a doubt Charlie Hunnam. Why are they keep hiring this guy? He is one of the most untalented actors that ever disgraced the silver screen with his presence. Period. All in all the film is very underwhelming, I'm really sad because this could have been something really special. And for certain level it is, but we have seen this before dozens of times, even from del Toro and we have seen it done better.
