It was OK...
An unconventional love story set in the near future where single people, according to the rules of The City, are arrested and transferred to The Hotel. There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods. A desperate Man (Colin Farrell) escapes from The Hotel to The Woods where The Loners live and falls in love, although it is against their rules.
I can only beg you not to see this film. I wish someone had done me the same courtesy. There is literally nothing good to say.
This has to be the worst film I've ever seen!! Don't waste you time or money on this rubbish!
It's a bit Marmite - you'll likely either love or hate it. I watched it after a cracking review in The Guardian and thought it was great. The characters and performances are truly grotesque. Tha's where I found much of the humour, as well as in well-known actors playing against type (Colin Farrell brings real warmth to his role, whilst Olivia Coleman is terrifying!).
The Lobster, I'd heard, is a marmite film so it took me a while to see it. As a marmite lover I fell in love with it....every little quirky bit of it, of which there are many, and which come together to make up an astounding film. It's gorgeous, dark, very dark, funny, sad, and it makes you think just a little bit. It was my movie of the year, and I'm hard to please. Haven't yet found another contender to talk about do excitedly.
This film you will watch, then be in a state of confusion, so you will watch again and again and again. Then next thing you know it's your favourite film.
It is neither funny, intelligent or original - lot's of people have made bad films before. It doesn't make you think intelligently about anything other than the resources wasted and opportunities lost. The only thing good about it are the occasional glimpes of the Wicklow hills - beautiful indeed but now temporarily tainted.
My wife and I watched this. It's rubbish. There a handful of jokes that make you smile, but not laugh. It's a bit twisted. I didn't see the funny side of kicking a dog to death. The soundtrack is ghaustly. It drags on and nothing really happens. Then it ends on a cliff hanger. So even if it something did happen, you don't find out about it. The whole film is awkward to say the least. I would best describe this as an episode of Father Ted. Only all the cast have just suffered a bereavement and are trying to soldier on. I really cannot see why people like this film at all.
This is a clever and witty film. I laughed a lot. Ending is controversial and the only bit I felt a bit disappointed with. All in all an interesting, thought provoking film and one worthy watching. Good concept and excellent performances.
This has to be up there with the top 100 films not to watch.
I would have to say this is the worst film I have seen in a very long time. A good cast was the only thing going for it.
This film is original, inspiring and revolutionary... If you've never watched an alternative film before. The ideas are overdone and obtuse throughout the film, never providing an opinion or view on the matters it brings up. The acting is awkward and the lines are so truthful and boring, you wonder if the characters have any charm or wit about their personality. I now know why they can't find a romantic partner, it's because in their world everyone is a sociopath or a psychopath. Uninteresting, unfunny, uninspiring, hated it!
I can't believe how many good actors are in this film yet it is unbelievably rubbish and at times very disturbed.
Great film. Extremely dark. Loved it.
Perhaps a bit artsy and odd ball for me.
Didn't get it, overly violent scene with the dog being killed
Save your £££
It's not a comedy. It's not funny. It's boring and pointless.
I’ve read the good reviews this film has received with a sense of disbelief. Maybe I am missing something but this film, to me, represents a waste of celluloid. A heavyweight cast (which attracted me) but the film was most disappointing on just about every level. I wish I could find something good to say about this film but I can’t.
The trailer makes it look funnier/better than it is. It’s not a comedy - it’s just a dark film with some horrid stuff in it that has some good quality one liners. Shame, because many good actors. They give excellent performances, but the film as a whole is not a good output of their talent.
Quite possibly the worst and weirdest film I've ever seen
Given the idea and the cast quality this film should have been more enjoyable. As it is the story falls away toward the end and, while the performances are good, the going is slow, some of the violence is a little too graphic. The rather simple metaphor is let down by a script that could have been tighter and the black comedy could have been a little more comedic.
This is quite possibly the best mixture of dark and romantic comedy I've seen. I thought the film was perfect. You will either love or hate it. Hopefully love it.
If you like French cinema you will love it. If you like blockbuster Hollywood films you will not.
Excellent casting, wonderful cinematography, and great performances. At times the script is too cerebral, but acting compensates for it.
A black satire on the "rationality" and "rules" of love and relationships ...where everybody HAS to be in a relationship but love is like creativity. It appears and disappears from our lives without our permission, as it pleases.
Immersive and funny as long as you relax and don't take the plot literally!
Coming out of the financial, and cultural crisis of modern Greece it makes this film even more valuable and meaningful, about the power of creative people to maintain their vision in the midst of a storm.
Our true debt is to artists and scientists, not bankers.
well sorry not for me just glad I did not buy this one but as a rented film I just wasted my money on this pile of rubbish
A nice idea, well made and very original but in the end, just a rubbish film and a waste of my time.
Two excruciating, struggling-to-keep-awake hours!
Disturbing. Not sure how this film can be classed as a comedy.
Borderline offensive in its stance on film making, art, relationships, and mental illness. Satire in this film too often gives way to smugness. The film feels like a product of mis-placed entitlement.
If you’re into watching grown men run around in tights, wearing capes and saving the day, then jog on, this film isn’t for you… but if you enjoy something different, an original idea, a wonderful cast, beautifully filmed in a gorgeous part of the world, then have a watch. Highly recommended.
Saw it in the cinema. As a struggling film maker I’m not sure if this gives me hope or makes me want to kill myself. The very idea that this was given a green light is worrying!
The interesting concept and storyline (along with cast and trailer) influenced my decision to watch this … I like 'off the wall films’ that show creativity and individuality, but this is not a comedy. It is an eery drama (with dark comedic moments), which is the other side of that category spectrum …
The definition of a marmite movie, but if you can handle something a bit more avant-garde, then I cannot recommend this highly enough, as I think that it's the best film of the decade thus far.
A grotesque maybe. Sorry but any film that features realistic torture can’t be a comedy in my opinion. Interesting concept and a perplexing if interesting start… But… but a good 30 mins too long with nothing new to say in the last hour.
A perfect parallel world. Wonderfully blank characters teetering on the edge of humanity. Fantastically other.
Is this joke? I kept laughing all the way through at how bad it was.. Turned it of finally aftern 1hr and 20. That's time I won't get back. Read the negative reviews and thought it couldn't be that bad.. I was wrong. DEFINATELY STAY AWAY!!!!!!
Sickeningly awful! Awful awful
Very understated in many ways. Very dramatic subjects of the depth people will go when their expectations are not met and their subsequent revengeful cruelty. The “State” also acts in this revengeful manner punishing any wayward behaviour condoning only very limited interpretations of “successful” relationships.
The characters tip-toe around the hazards of relationships using highly stilted contrived conversation pieces in order to convince themselves and others that they match (apparently so that they can just survive.
The films shows that trying to match being the most unrealistic but only socially acceptable method with almost funny consequences. The opposing force of singles drifters living in the woods are also trying to comply with a pack mentality with “opposite” values. In the government “hotel” and loner groups those being tested for compliance to which ever group they belong are tested and punished brutally.
I guess the point in the end would have been that we shouldn’t give in to the tyranny of the force that groups put on individuals to be assimilated and compliant to the norm but then in the final minute you see how the overwhelming conditioning to match has very tragic consequences. Equally ridiculous and unfathomable as the actions of the herd mentality!!
A truly puzzling movie. As it has an ending without a firm conclusion I put this firmly in the "French film noire”. Definitely not a movie for those who need action and “drama” as per the Hollywood style of tell them what you are going to happen, them, them tell them that it has happened, then tell them again until it is stamped over and over and the good guys are the winners and th bad guys are dead or redeemed or punished!
This is the first ever review that I have written - don't waste your time or money and watch something else!!!
I went into see this film in a good mood and came out totally and utterly depressed. This is one of the worst films I've ever seen not one bit of this film did I enjoy apart from the end which was awful too.
Fantastic film, fantastic acting, fantastic idea and the casting was perfect. Anyone hating this film does so because they'd rather be watching Fast and Furious or other such drivel. Film of the year.
I’m sure it’s very ‘clever’ - lots of professional reviewers and critics have said so and they’re obviously always right - but I didn’t find this at all funny or even very interesting. It’s stilted, repetitive, nastily violent (not too many laughs in kicking a dog to death in my book) and the dialogue is unremittingly dreary. One for the luvvies and self-important critics. Not one I’ll ever want to watch again.
Such a fantastic concept and beautifully filmed - intriguing throughout.
I have never gone to the bother of leaving a review on iTunes before… but I felt compelled to here as I have just wasted 2 hours of my life. Not one laugh, not one mind opening moment, not one great scene. I beg you to stay well away from this absolute waste of time. No matter what you read in to it… romance, coupling up, social etiquette… there are far better and thought provoking movies out there. STAY AWAY!!
This film looked interesting but it's so slow, depressing & totally self indulgent. Comedy? I don't see the laughs. What's funny about graphic killing of animals? Wish I hadn't bothered as I feel very morbid after watching this. Now I have to spend another fiver to watch something with some charm, life & vigor to get me out of this fug!
Crazy, surrealist black comedy. Starts off very funny then loses its way towards the end. I mean, if you can't find a partner by the end of your stay at Crazy Towers, you'll be turned into an animal and released into the wild, guys what were you expecting after reading that summary of the plot?
Animals don’t survive long.
People don’t survive long.
My sanity could’t survive long whilst watching this…
You get the idea.
Just too far wayward, in so many ways. It’s a love/hate film. I think you get my view of it.
The one redeeming feature with regards to this film was Colin Farrell's performance. Other than that it was awful self indulgent crap. I wish I could get my £9.99 back.
Terrible, poorly written, boring. Trying too hard to be out there. You have been warned.
A grotesque comedy that really makes you think about our concept of romance and obsession with coupledom. Beautifully shot in Ireland and an exceptional performance from Colin Farrell. A must see if you enjoy original movies.
imho a self-indulgent journey into the writer’s self-referencing preoccupation with strange melancholy sexuality laced with a dollop of self loathing. post-modern, nihilistic navel gazing. ho hum. how do they get the money to do this kind of movie?
