Description
Brooklyn is the story of a young woman, Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, NY where, unlike home, she has the opportunity for work and for a future - and love, in the form of Italian-American Tony (Emory Cohen). When a family tragedy brings her back to Ireland, she finds herself absorbed into her old community, but now with eligible Jim (Domhnall Gleeson) courting her. As she repeatedly postpones her return to America, Eilis finds herself confronting a terrible dilemma - a heart-breaking choice between two men and two countries.

I really thought this movie was overrated. It certainly didn’t warrant all the Oscar talk. It is mawkish & sentimental.

What a stunning film, incredibly good acting and a captivating and beautiful story.

One of the very best
It would be hard to praise this film too much.
The acting is excellent, and the principal character has a mixture of determination and reserve which brings to life her struggle for self-determination. Very highly recommended.

Beautifully shot, some great casting and with a terrific Nick Hornby screenplay. Worthy of the many awards nominations it received yet somehow didn't win.
