Visionary director J.J. Abrams brings to life the motion picture event of a generation. As Kylo Ren and the sinister First Order rise from the ashes of the Empire, Luke Skywalker is missing when the galaxy needs him most. It's up to Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, a defecting stormtrooper, to join forces with Han Solo and Chewbacca in a desperate search for the one hope of restoring peace to the galaxy.
A lazily plotted film in many ways because it is essentially a remake of A New Hope. What saved this film was the strong characters both old (Han) and new (Rey and Kylo). A cracking lightsaber fight in the snow is simply magical. However, dangling threads have been left to hit the dirt and scum underneath the heavy stomping boots of The Last Jedi. Episode 9 will have done some work to clean the dirt off enough to allow this film to shine again.
wow... just a rip off from a new hope. need some examples?
1.a young person bored to death and a desert planet (luke/rey)
2.finds a droid carrying valuable information (R2-D2/BB-8)
3.escapes in the millennium falcon
4. is given a lightsaber by a force user (obi-wan/maz)
5.blows up a massive base (death star/starkiller)
i could go on...
im not saying it was as bad as last jedi, cos it wasnt. abrams is a great director. the storyline couldve been better. how did maz get lukes lightsaber? who are reys parents? we didnt even get a snoke backstory in the last jedi!
what im trying to point out is disney... cant make a starwars right.
i liked finn though... he was a very new character and i appreciate that idea from abrams.
maz was a cool intro too. a call alien force user with 4 fingers. 👍🏻
rey felt like a repeat of luke so im not to happy about her. also i feel daisy ridley is a terrible actor and a bit too young to have the main role in star wars already.
bad movie. step it up in EP.9 please abrams!
crapiness rating: STAR WARS EP.7 THE FORCE AWAKENS...
💩💩💩 out of 5
My favourite character by far is bb8 he is amazing I just love that droid I like all the other characters as well overall great film
Wow. When I started watching the Star Ears movies for the first time, I got them for Christmas in2014 at the age of 17. Never seen the films, but knew the big twist m. It was common knowledge. First time watching the 6 films. I liked them, but not as much as people hyped them out to be. The second time I rewatched them was before the Force Awakens premiered. Rewatching them, I started to enjoy the films a lot more. Watching documentary and behind the scenes on how Star Wars made an impact truly made me appreciate the films.
Watched Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens in IMAX 3D on the premiere date. It was early in the morning and I was half asleep. The 3D hurt my eyes making it even uncomfortable. But I didn’t care because I was so excited watching the film. It exceeded my expectations m. A thrill ride with great characters, great acting, visuals l, story and direction. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adem Driver and. Oscar Issic were great new additions to the saga. Great seeing the old characters like Harrasion Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Davis, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.
John Williams was also great with the music and J.J Abrams is this generations’s George Lucas. He truly captured the imagination of Star Wars in this great sequal. I have seen the entire saga more than 5 times, including this film and will watch them all over again and again.
Overall, great film. And can’t wait to see Star Wars Episode 8 The Last Jedi.
R.I.P Carrie Fisher and Kenny Baker.😢
I love Star Wars and this one is just great!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Watch rogue one and you will see what difference having the right actors and a great story line makes. It’s an epic film. The force awakens is let down some wrong cast choices and a storyline being to similar to the original. It’s still a good film but you can’t help think Disney made it to appeal to the under 16’s!
It's quite good but some things were off.The cgi snoke and other things.
JJ Abrams didnt take too many risks when making this film, and it shows.
Admittedly, there was no way this film was going to please everyone, but surely fans of the OT should have been on their 'hit' list?
This film carefully retreads the plot of the ANH (and arguably TPM), diveting from it's course just long enough re-introduce the old cast and shoe horn in a nod to the OT before continuing on with its uninspiring plot.
Some of the new characters have immediate depth, and are worthy additions to the canon, and the aesthetics of the SW universe has been faithfully recreated.
Daidy Ridley has the opportunity to be an excellent lead, but her character was let down by being made into a textbook example of a Mary Sue, seemingly a master pilot (of the Millennium Falcon no less), Engineer, Force user and lightsaber duelist, within hours of meeting the rest of the cast.
While the film was really quite heavy handed with the anaolgies to Nazism, the First Order are a fitting replacement for the Empire, and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren a dark and troubled replacement for Vader.
Similar to Rogue One, and perhaps inspiring it, this film took every oportunity to 'elbow you in the ribs' with a nod or tongue-in-cheek reference to the OT, to the point that it became an ongoing irritation (although Rogue One was far worse in this respect).
I lef the cinema feeling let down and cancelled my pre-order, although I did give in and buy the film some weeks later as I felt it deserved a second chance...
I did enjoy the lightsaber duel in the woods though... best one yet!
The cast played their parts well with what they had.... A very poor script JJ Abrams showed no imagination at all. very lazy writing a rehash of A New Hope, and Kylo Ren is more like and whiny little boy than a dark lord not menacing at all, actually quite annoying.
I paid £13.99 for this, but it won't download.
It's a great movie though!
TFA is a fantastic addition to the starwars story.
Its been over a year now and should really be up for rental and not just to buy!!
I like the new cgi, the characters (most of them) seem good but the whole film seemed rushed and unoriginal. Being a big Star Wars fan I just felt like I was watching a remake of the first film but done not as well.
I did like the character interaction as the comedy value was good. I also liked some interesting new takes on how to use the force.
I assume it's a film for the younger and newer generation but for us older fans that have grown up with Star Wars it's just a touch boring.
It is already a brilliant modern version of the Star Wars world, but what I loved more is the extras included in this, which just really broaden out the whole experience. 5 stars :)
Yes, it's more of a movie for fans than for Lucas -that's the point and JJ is both respectful and masterful in his execution of, this, almost impossible task of continuing the most hallowed franchise. Brilliant.
As a seasoned Star Wars fan, this film felt overly familiar from the off. While the events of the movie were well handled and not overly telegraphed, the fact that they follow so closely to A New Hope means that fans will see the major plot points coming, even if they have avoided all trailers and spoliers.
That you are reading this review now, still undecided about whether or not to see this movie means that you are either a) a fan that has been put off by the prequels or b) a newcomer. Watch this movie. Seriously, it is artfully and lovingly made. The story, visuals and new characters are all top-notch. The film s well paced and blends humour and nostalgia with action and suspense.
The best Star Wars Film of the last 20 years, easily. The only drawback is the overly extensive reliance on the original trilogy.
"Star Wars : The Force Awakens" was the the best blockbuster of the year! However, some elements of it were very disappointing...
The film had a memorable and good opening scene, very similar to "A New Hope"'s opening sequence. Some of the new characters were brilliant : Poe Daromen was slick and humorous(very similar to Han Solo), Finn was cool and likeable (very similar to Luke Skywalker) BB-8 was original (similar to R2-D2) and Kylo Ren was cold and evil (very similar to Darth Vader)
The character of Kylo Ren was especially well drawn. He may of been evil and dark and a bad man but you felt sympathy for him because you have feeling that he has had a tough life and he has used the dark side of the force and helped the First Order to get through his sad life and take out his anger on innocent lives and the Jedi
Props, set, costume and fx, it was all 100%.. Most of all, however, what really made the film in terms of how the move was made was J.J Abrahams's beautiful directing. If J.J wasn't directing the movie would not of had the "power of the force". Out of all the seven films, this one had the best director. Sadly, Abrahams will not be directing the next film...
Having said all this, the film didn't have an original plot. The whole point of Star Wars is originality and creativity. This film's story had none of that. The first half was ok (plot wise), however the second half's story was almost the same as "A New Hope" Two key characters were not well drawn: Supreme Leader Snoke (he was meant to be like The Emperor), was completely CGI and looked like the BFG, you couldn't take him seriously and the character Rey (meant to be like Leia) was wooden and disappointing. Additionally the very last scene was very weak and underwhelming.
Apart from all that the film was enjoyable and well made! It had good action, humour(Chewbaca, Finn, Poe and Han Solo were very funny!) evil, kind and slick new characters and brilliant cinematography and directing!
"The Force Awakens" has opened many doors to prequels, sequels and spinoffs in the Star Wars Galaxy. However, the question is, will all these doors lead to the dark side, or the light...
I love Star Wars but this film is S.H.@.T
I am a fan of George Lucas and I am a fan of Star Wars and even more fan of video games of Star Wars but this one don't get me wrong it's good from start to finish but times watching it again I realised it takes little things from new hope, empire strikes back and return of the Jedi... a lot of people won't like it because George didn't write or directed the film and see it as a reboot of the franchise it's been given to Disney to finish the whole story of Star Wars tbh it bugged me a little when I heard the news but people did say George Lucas thought it was good and I think the fans will love it because people love it how it captures the retro feeling of the old films which it does but I wish they kept some concepts and stories that George Lucas did wrote before they tossed it and made their own story of the new films upcoming... Star Wars is a cult classic and a fantastic movie from the originals to the prequels and I did like and enjoy this movie I wouldn't say I love it but I did enjoy it I see it more of an fan film of the people who loved watching George Lucas original movies but all we can do is see that if George Lucas will work back with Disney to finish the story if he chooses to do that or see what Disney will do to the Star Wars story and if they will keep its legacy... George Lucas is a brill man but let's see what he thinks about the new stories coming from Disney or we will see if he will finish it himself....
I was 9 in 1977, I can't remember whether I saw the first Star Wars film (I don't call it A New Hope, it was Star Wars in 1977 and will always remain so) in late 1977 or early 1978, living Bletchley we got films later than most big towns. That film sparked my love of movies that has carried on today. This new edition to the Star Wars universe worried a lot of fans but, I think, their fears have been quelled. A really wonderful film full of nods to the past and hints to the future. Perhaps in 10 years time my love for this film will be tempered (A fate Ep.4&5 haven't suffered from) I don't know. But for now JJ Abrahams has got my undivided attention, roll Spring 2017 for the Star Wars Episode XIII.
How much did mark hamil get paid for his timely performance? Lol. This gets 9 stars for having original cast
Seen the film twice.
First was on Boxing Day the week it came out, I was so super pschyed that i didn't notice the massive "Mary Sue".
Second viewing wasin mid-feb 2016, and it was then that it confirmed my worries that had built up after my first viewing thoughts.
Luke knew about Jedi's and the force but was not able to use it correctly and with any degree of success until EpVI...that is 10 years!! but "Mary Rey Sue" can use every part of the force straight away...COBBLERS!!!
For me the "Saga" ended with Episode VI.
This abomination does not exist in my Star Wars Universe.
Love Star Wars
If you've seen their first movie this will just seem like more of the same without the punch the first release carried. Like watching one of the latest James Bond films compared with a good classic Sean Connery version
Yes it's just like a new hope but it is still enjoyable
Where you read "pays homage to the original" read, an incredibly unimaginative copy. Ergo, what was amazing then is luke warm now. Rent and skim if you must.
Not my words, the words of Shakin' Stevens.
it’s one of the best films i’ve ever seen.
The Force Awakens lived up to everything I hoped the continuation of the franchise would deliver. It keeps close to the original trilogy (some think too close but I disagree) whilst introducing us to an entirely new direction moving forward.
A film that will please enthusiasts and new comers to the franchise alike, the force awakens features incredible visuals, loveable characters and a tried and tested story that for me hits the sweet spot.
So this is how personal expression dies, with thunderous applause to the completely plagiarised story, full of plot holes that seems to have been written by a Computer more than someone who has a story to tell. The prequels for all their faults are far better, Dooku is a far more effective villain, Christopher Lee is far more 3 dimensional a character than Kylo Ren could ever hope to be, the character of Rey progresses far to quickly for the film timeline, JJ should have looked at previous Jedi in training when he plotted the story, she should not have been able to do half the thing she did in this film, neither Anakin nor Luke were able to. Compared to the other films the soundtrack seems bland and unappealing, nothing of the standards of 'Duel of the fates', 'Far across the Stars' or 'Battle of Heroes'
love the special effects good job! but i m not suprising by the film... disney just took lucas's scripts...
I downloaded as there wasn't much else to watch.
Whilst enjoyable, I couldn't give it more then 3*'s.
I guess you have to be a Star Wars fan to get it perhaps?
Not bad though
Abrams reboot of Star Trek was captured the spirit of the original, this falls short of that mark. Nicely shot and good new characters but more rehash that reboot.
A re hash of the original with nothing interesting
so with the SD version you wont get the extras but with the HD version you can? great! oh wait.... i cant play it on my pc because apparently its not compatible to view HD versions.... nice one.
Sorry, but this was a rip off repeat of the very first Star Wars movie. So they took the original script, changed a few names and tinkered slightly with the characters, but it was the same movie all over again that I watched all those decades ago. Down to attacking the big death star…really? Lame, really lame.
This film is only worth renting it's not as good as I thought it would be it has a good story and it's good to see the old crew in the film but I was left with wanting the film to be better and It had 2 many computer effects that made it look like a Star Wars computer game So that's my take
This was actually a good movie. All the good parts you would want from a Star Wars movie were there plus a bit of modernisation. I would happily watch this again and will do!
I'm not going to write a long winded review, I just want to say it's beautifully directed, acted and has a great story which is a worthy addition to the saga.
Loved all the Star Wars films since I was a kid and this film was great update for the modern era superb 👍😉
Weak, repetitive and ultimately an inferior copy of the original. What the film makers gain with modern CGI they loose with casting and performances; nobody shines out. And why Harrison Ford would want to rehash the Han Solo character is anyone's guess? Even the plot seems puerile in the extreme. Lucas milked this cash cow until shrivelled. Strictly a movie for little kids.
Loved it. Great movie - looking forward for more.
sadly have to say and agree with most people who gave this a 2-3 star its based on the very first 1977 release unorignal and lack luster good effects i suppose but thats it sorry
Through out the Force Awakens I was in awe, it just builds and builds. It was amazing! Thought it had a lot of old references to keep it familiar and new characters taking leading roles to make it fresh. Enjoyable from start to end.
Saw it a few times at the cinema and I don't usually do that. Hugely entertaining and that's the main thing. Compares favourably to the OT and made the prequels look second rate. But I grew up with the OT, so..
Looking forward to seeing the next ones..
The detractors were obviously expecting this film to be the second coming of the messiah, or something. Meh.. There's no pleasing some people.. Or maybe they think it's 'hipster cool' to bash on a deservedly popular film..
what a dreadful film
Good film when I was in this film it was good to be a part of . Big John 👍
