Experimenter is based on the true story of famed social psychologist Stanley Milgram, who in 1961, conducted a series of behaviour experiments that tested ordinary people's willingness to obey by using electric shock.

Having read Milgram's book. ‘obedience to authority' many years ago, this is the first time that a film deals not only with the experiment itself and the conclusions it reaches about the willingness of human beings to obey a perceived authority, the film usefully deals with the controversy that attended the experiment leaving the impression that the true source of the controversy was an unwillingness to accept empirical evidence of an unpalatable aspect of human nature. Those unfamiliar with Milgram’s work would, I think, find this film both informative and entertaining.
