Every frame drips with atmosphere and an overwhelming sense of dread. This film is a cinephiles dream but I can understand why it has so many negative reviews as it is not a film for everyone. Story plays a back seat to aesthetic and thematic narrative. If you go into this expecting a ‘typical’ creature feature you will be sorely disappointed.

This film is awful dreadful and boring.i got it free when someone bought the DVD they gave me the uv code from it.honestly I felt like I'd wasted money using electric just downloading it.i sat counting the minutes till it finished,not wanting to knock it off in case I missed something as it was classed as a "top" film.unless it's a list of most boring films ever then this won't top nothing.even the do called big reveal at the end just reminds me of a straight to DVD 99p budget film.just awful attempts at acting and stupid accents.its meant to be suspense but in reality it's just nothing happens ,that's their excuse for an awful film ,just saying it's building on suspense but that usually means building up to something.yeah people die but it's so random and badly acted and lasts seconds.just think of it like American horror story coven but worse,if you like that series then you might like this but if like most people you hated it then you'll hate the witch ,GUARANTEED

this movie is absolutely disgusting, the plot and idea is veryy sickening and the movie was extremeley disturbing. Honestly I am a huge horror and thrill fan but i am completey shocked when i watched this as i am confused how the rating are high on this movie. WAste of my money and my time!!

Just watched 'The Witch' - it won't be everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was fantastic! A really disturbing tale of horror and tragedy that brings home the sheer strength of superstition in the 17th Century.

The forest and the dark are the backdrop for this blend of various English/American folk tales of the period. It is an outstanding mix of beautiful cinematography, especially lighting and soundtrack, and fantastic performances... the young lad who plays Caleb gave an outstanding performance.

It wasn't comfortable viewing in any sense, disturbing from start to finish without the need for any big budget special effects. Recommended.

Despite the poor audio that made listening to the dialogue impossible at times, the story was almost nonexistent, drawn out for an hour and a half and although I'm a fan of the main male actor the resulting production was in simple terms, a total non event.

Not scary, slow, boring, and a pointless waste of time. If you want to watch a good horror movie, this is not for you. And I love all types of film.

No plot. Terrible direction with no affinity with the characters. You can't understand a lot of the dialogue because it's in some kind of fake old English.

The events of the film have no reason or link to an actual storyline. If sitting through all this rubbish waiting for it to get going wasn't enough. Get ready for one of the most stupid and totally bazaar endings to a film ever. Comical! Total waste of money and waist of time. How this can be rated 5 star by some is baffling!

Good acting, perfect simple setting and premise, and scary witches. The film is boring because the plot is boring, and you don't see enough of the witches. Too much focus on the family drama, and it gets exhausting waiting for the next argument to be over. Basically 3 things happen (no spoilers): baby, boy and ending in the whole film, and the rest is the family arguing about it, which is not that scary.

Utter garbage, don't waste your time.

My mum was scarier running round the garden in her bed sheet ghost Halloween costume. This film was absolutely awful. The accent, the storyline, the acting. Don't waste your time. Children scared of a goat or a hare because it's a witch. I've never watched anything so ridiculous

Very eerie and out of the box type of film.

This "horror" is so slow it makes melting glasiers seem positively speedy. There is nothing scary about it, at all. I'm not a big fan of films that purely use jump scares so was glad to start watching and noticed there were none but neither was there phycological horror, gore or anything to class this as a horror.

I must say this film is well acted with authentic dialogue and costumes but that's it. As someone else wrote wait till this comes out on another service for free if you really do want to see it or you could go round a friend's and get them to pay for it though you may lose a friend after watching it. I turned it off about half way through.

Oh, and did I say this was a pile of sh**te?

A good film, spooky, authentic and slightly disturbing. Don't expect thrills and acute horror its more of a folklore of ye olden times kinda story, I enjoyed but only rent not buy.

One of the worst horror movies ever. If you have seen the trailer then you have seen the best of the film. Well written movie but it's no horror. Dreadful.

I really would not waste money (renting or buying) this film. The one positive was the locations and the cinematography was better then expected; in creating a 'slightly' dark feel, but this by no means make it a horror! The fact that so many people say it is a landmark horror film is frankly laughable - who is paying you???? I love horrors, but just because this is set in the 'oldy' world with olde english andhas some references to Black Phillip and Witchcraft (in my opinion an absolute insult to any witch or witchraft as a whole) does not make it in any way a horror. I have no clue as to what genre this film belongs in; but it really should not be classified as a horror. Although they did put the village down as a horror, and i can see alot of similarities in the direction of this film. So maybe a new genre needs to be created for these types of films - the one saving grace for The village was the 'twist' in the end.

First off - ignore ANY 1* review for this film. I can absolutely guarantee that anyone leaving these have ZERO appreciation of cinema and wouldn't recognise a good film if it bit then on the a***. Uneducated morons shouldn't go to see films if you ask me.

Anyway, for those of you can actually appreciate superb cinema - absolutely see this. It's a genre-defying piece of brilliance that will creep you out and awe you with the skill of first time director Robert Eggers. Bl**dy brilliant, I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

So I don't think this can be classed as a 'bad' movie but it's definitely not for everyone. It's one of those movies where there's silent scenes and the camera just stares at someone's face for 3 minutes (I'm assuming trying to capture the emotion or something?). Artistic I think is a good word but I wasn't feeling it and neither were the people I was watching it with. Scare factor: low, suspense: low, atmosphere: pretty good, acting: moderate and the script was difficult to understand I thought. Not a cheap thrill Friday night movie in my opinion.

No matter what others have said here, this is a film that has been exceptionally well crafted, acted and photographed. It avoids many of the devices used by modern horror fims and in doing so has clealry split opinion.

If I had any criticism it would be that the film could have been longer!

Immersing ourselves into the cultural and religious landscape of those early pioneers in the American wilderness was a historical treat. The use of language gave the film an authenticty that adds to the suspense and overall story. The audience have to use their intelligence and imagination to string together some of the events, something else which added to the film's appeal for me.

This is definitely one to watch again and again. It would be even better if we could see more of the same type of film being made - the creeping uncertainty of the known unknown drives the narrative and plays on our superstitions and fears - an excellent addition to the collection of the connoisseur! Baa Baa!

One of the most unique horror films I have seen in a long time

needlessly dragged out, simple times but the folks were not just simple they were stupid and the plot held too much from that to keep moving. I like a slow build but it was very slow with a very short snap at the end. Then it was over. Could have been first half build and second half more horror.

Just did not work, too one paced.

The old english was fine, added to it if anything? nothing else going on.

Impossible to look away - and you will want to - a slow burn horror which has virtually no boo! moments and grips like a vice. You have to watch every frame to get the most out of it. It is slow and crammed with incident at the same time, rewarding patient viewing. Only the last few minutes feel like a slight let down, but up to then you almost have to remember to breathe. Rcommended.Reminded me of The Shining in places.

This is horror how the used to make it, like The Wicker Man and good Hammer. Just fantastic.

Overhyped rubbish, great actors just has nothing about it of any interest. Not scary, not jumpy, not tense, it is however a waste of money. If you really want to see it, wait until it is free on Netflix as you will be as upset as I was if you pay for it.

At least if you're going to make a film, at least make it accessible. They've used such old English that none of the film actually makes any sense. Slow moving and I was totally giving up by 45mins in.

I saw the trailer and it looked good, the reviews said the "scariest film ever". It wasn't scary, it was a simple film based in the 1930, old english and based in a forest. No gore, no jumpy bits and no story... All I can say is a waste of money, if you like you a good taim film to bypass an hour it's a good buy other than that... I wouldn't pay £5 for it if I knew it was like that.

Brilliant start, very promising, the tension builds fantastically and it was gripping for a good 40-50 minutes, but then it loses direction and runs out of steam up until the all too common clumsy, slightly silly ending. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this film and it is definitely worth a watch for a different sort of horror.

This Movie is not even worth a 1 star , take no notice of the 5 star reviews this is really the worst movie I have ever seen and I have watched virtually all genres , and so my advice is buy it !

And of course waste your money!

This is a world apart from most horror.

Intelligent, considered and not afraid to take its time and let tension slowly build.

The dialogue is stunning, and the acting brilliant. The cinematography, using natural lighting, is stunning.

That said, the star of the show is undoubtedly Black Philip.

Well acted, and interesting themes. I enjoyed the folklore and certainly a well told story of how superstition forces families to turn on their own. Scary though, this film is not.

... but to dismiss this as 1 star is criminal. Discerning horror fans, if you haven't seen this then put it at the top of your list. One of the most clever, unsettling releases in years. Superb acting from the entire cast and deliciously dark. Another fine example of what you can achieve when you don't resort to tired route one jump scares. Very impressive and looking forward to a second view.

Like so many people i got sucked into the hype and advertising of this movie, at last i thought, an old school horror that's sure to deliver. Boy was i wrong, the story start's of well but soon teeters off! The acting is good, but is wasted on a thin story line. The jump factor is non existent and it's about as scary as 'Malificent' was! Screenwriters these days seem to have real trouble keeping the story going and never seem to be able to come up with a decent ending! Just watch the advert, it shows all the best bit's! Don't waste your money on this crap!
