Description

A stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie's Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

I read all the above reviews, I watched the youtube reviews, and I wasn't sure to take the chance to get this movie or not as there are so many negative reviews, however taking the plunge I have to say I fully enjoyed this, yes there were lots of long talking scenes, but they were part of the plot, building up the tension to the point the film explodes in blood.
I don't know why Tarantino had to talk mid way through the film to explain what was happening because it seemed quite clear without him - I simply felt that spoilt the film very much and was stupid. That aside, it was brilliantly done! I wish I had not waited and had watched the movie when it first came out, but it is a film you can watch repeatedly, as the actors do great performances, at times beautifully overacted which suited each particular scene. Jennifer Jason Leigh out plays everyone!!! Damn, she deserved an oscar for her part.
I watched Mark Kermode give his review of the film and I must say on this occassion I totally disagree with him. This really is a good film, it did not feel this was merely bits of other films.
I would love to see Tarantino do more westerns, sadly, I doubt that will happen because everyone panned this one.

Great fan of his work but this has got be amongst my worst films ever list. Most scenes are ridiculously dragged out which ends up making the film so long. Mediocre predictable storyline with no shocks, suspense or surprises.

Anyone who gives this movie any less than 5 stars yet claims to be a 'Tarantino fan' is purely impatient. The first half is very slow (yet fascinating), but it's done breathtakingly, all building up to the fantastic second half. One of Quentin Tarantino's best ever.

I don't normally write reviews but was shocked by all the negative ones. I found it to be a beautifully suspensful and gripping film. It is a slow burner. and details are uncovered bit by bit. It's rich in subtext and the characters have such nuanced performances that you never know who's lying and who's telling the truth. People who said the plot was predictable surely are psychic or have just seen a lot of films of this style before. Besides what's exciting about this film isn't what happens, but deciphering why. Rich like a caramel crusted cake on a cold winter's night.

This is Tarantino’s masterpiece. IGNORE the naysayers, they are just wrong. This is Tarantino’s most stunningly visual and firecrackingly lyrical and brutal movie. Just superb. HUGELY entertaining. Yes, it’s a slow-burner but it is all the more deliciously enjoyable for it.

What a shame!

Tarantino has lost the plot. Could have been a great movie but was an hour too long, long drawn out script, and the waste of some decent actors. Avoid.

Over long film with no real substance and no feeling that the director knew what he wanted to do with this story or it's characters. He certainly thinks that we can't get enough of the N word but i say we need a little less of it and make it matter more when it's actually used. There's a germ of a great idea in this screenplay but Tarantino got nowhere near finding it.

I am a huge fan of Tarantino and was expecting something great with this. I think the use of previous actors with new could have set the movie up well. However, it was like watching them play their characters from earlier movies. Mr Tatum popping up at the end did not add anything but I laughed when he had his head blown off. That and hanging the outlaw and dying in a pool of blood, bit too reservoir dogs and not original.

This film is like a child telling you about a dream that they had after watching too many cowboy and horror movies. Don't waste your time on it.
The guitar they destroyed was the real thing as well. A genuine 1870's number on loan from a museum. Morons.

Part western, part suspenseful 'who dunnit' this film is artfully constructed to draw you in. Great fun, a genuine cinematic treat. Unless you're expecting an adrenaline fuelled thrill ride, in which case look elsewhere and stop complaining. Attention span required.

A long film, this needs more at the front end to set the pace. Good storyline, not really predictable as some say, “guessable" but only because of the limited number of actors in it! Loved the last 90 minutes, Tarantino at his best, ruthless. Would rent again.

After a slow star I thought it must get better - it didn't. You expect a gentle preamble from Tarrantino but it just didn't improve. Yes blood and guts and the typical sort of Tarrantino ending but should have been 1 hour 40 and perhaps a better film.

Superb. Part Western, part murder mystery, pulled off with panache, character and vision. Stunning cinematography too. Better than Django and at least on a par with Basterds, Tarantino still has a lot to say.

I don't know if it's just me, but Tarantino's films seem to get more and more dull.
The western genre clearly doesn't work for him (see django).
Go back to what you're good at.

I can understand why people may not like this movie. I however, was blown away by this masterpiece. If you loved Tarantino’s gritty and intense dialogue scenes such as the Tavern Scene in Inglourious Basterds, then this is the movie for you as there is 3 hours of it.
In my opinion, this is one of Tarantino’s best work!

Not what I expected from him in terms of the story … in fact no real story or point to all the violence … just sick some of it, and adds nothing to the story or characters. Did not enjoy at all and skipped much of it.

Intelligent, well paced, brilliantly acted and fun.
Not a Kill Bill action style film but doesn't suffer for it. Set in post Civil War America, it's more of a whodunit with characters shaped by the brutality of war thrown together.

Was looking forward to this film for a long time, I now feel some what let down, I'd even considered turning it off a couple of times. Not Tarantino's finest moment!

Its very good – *but* it's one mean old loveless hound of a movie.

Most of Tarantino's movies have some characters with a shimmer of something you can root for. I'll grant you the majority of characters are portrayed as inherently evil mofos. However we have some occasionally decent characters (such as in my favourite Jacky Brown). Then we have some within whom you see something better hiding under the grizzled personas and the cold external shells. In this movie, as the title suggests, ALL the key character are cruel, mean mothers. It's a cool movie and very well executed – but I never want to see any of the hateful eight ever again thank you very much. Most of his movies I have revisited several times, but I can't imagine that will happen here. If the film was a dog, it wound be one mean old loveless hound. *But*, it does what it says on the tin, is far from boring unless you have the attention span of a sparrow (it is a slow burner – I love slow burners!), and it is worth getting done with.

Enjoyed it! Especially the pace!

This is the first movie I've seen in a while where you don't feel like you are being rushed through the movie. Lots of time to savour details. The cinematography was impressive and a few details that were shown that are usually just glossed over in other movies. Then there is the logic used by some of the characters that is pleasantly refreshing. Yes there is some extreme gore/situations but overall still a great movie. I've realised Game of Thrones has desensitised us to a lot of stuff that would have been shockingly violent a few years ago. Nonetheless a good watch!

T's latest film had the potential to entertain and deliver an amazing plot, action and thought. But in fact is kind of weak, predictable, laboured and felt a waste of money and viewing time. The Actors are great, excellent cast but I think they were all let down. I wouldn't watch it again and after buying it as I have all of T's films, I wish Apple would great a partial money back system.
If you curious then watch it, don't buy it until you Rent though.

Very disappointed with this, as i'm a big Tarantino fan, but this was not one of his best.
All this hype about the use of 70mm, only for most of the film to be set indoors?????
A waste in my opinion.
The story was irritating, in regards to characters going to great lengths to kill someone, but spend most of the film just talking and taking and eating and waiting....... Yawn
Waaaayyyyy too much dialogue
And Sam Jackson being... Well, Sam Jackson...again!
Kurt Russell was excellent though, and the Ennio morricone score was sublime.

I've been a fan of Tarantino since i first saw Reservoir Dogs back in the 90's. I can't help but think, that something has gone amiss with 'The Hateful Eight'. For starter's it's an hour longer than the film need's to be, even with the input of Tarantino's usual complex script work that we've all come to love, I found it difficult to stay awake for the last hour of the movie! I found the story line to be unusually predictable, and with the exception of Kurt Russell and Samuel L Jackson's role's, i thought that the characters lacked much, if any real substance! I was excited to see Michael Madsen and Tim Roth returning for the 8th Tarantino movie, but was more than disappointed to find them both playing such mediocre role's! An absolute waste of two exceptional actors. Rent this one before you go ahead and buy this movie! unless you've already seen it and found it great watch. Personally I was more than disappointed!
