Loved the film! Ryan and Russell were great and the humor was fantastic.

Like so many American movies decent dialogue replaced by the F word. Shame really, otherwise a very good movie.

A film that is just good fun. Got the feeling the cast had fun making it.

I loved this film! Don't watch it expecting it to be at all serious or clever, it's just a good and really fun watch! I think Crowe and Gosling played their characters perfectly. It does require a kind of humour that probably isn't to everyone's taste.

Dreadful plot, Ryan Gosling was dreadful. They succeeded in emulating some of the worst '70s twaddle. Really dreadful film

It's not Oscar material but it is fun, doesn't test your brain too hard and is entertaining. Rent it and do not fret that you will be wasting your money.

All the actors did a great job in a comedy/thriller/adventure version of la confidential. Finally a decent buddy movie to come out the woodwork to boot!

You could really see there being a sequel because the two main characters portrayed by Gosling and Crowe are so well played and work well together making this, for me, a genuine laugh out loud comedy/action film

The film itself is very light hearted and shouldn't be taken too seriously though I cannot imagine anyone doing so if they watched the trailer

Watched it 3-4 times now and enjoy it every time. A keeper!

I had such high hopes for this film and was left utterly disappointed. We did find it hard to hear the actors speak as they seem to mumble pretty much throughout the film. Sure, there are a few comedic bits but they are few and far between! Even at the special price bought I wish I hadn't bothered.

From the reviews on iTunes this is clearly a love it or hate it film. I loved it - it was quintessential Shane Black and had me laughing throughout. Ryan Gosling trying to cover his bits in the toilet cubicle while threatening Russell Crowe was an outstanding piece of physical comedy.

Can you put a price on someone else's rubbish?? Load of badly written gags and a story from supermarket commercial....

Awful movie. Do not waste your money or time like I did. Terrible plot...all about a girl you have no idea who she is so you literally don't care they are trying to save her. Then she gets killed anyway in the end! Just the worst movie I have seen in a long time.

I could not understand the plot in this film, at one point a wasp was in the back of the car. waste of money !

It's a weird one this as it has all the potential states mapped out- but like a low state electron can't get the energy (writing) to give it the quantum leap to reach them.

All the chemistry in Crowe and Gosling - which never reacts - so no photon shower!

I had high hopes for this film but it was really boring. I also found some of the acting to be cringe worthy. It dragged on and on until I just turned it off. Glad I only payed 99p to rent it....

Anyone that gives this film 5 Stars must be on crack ! Two Stars at best, average in every way, not gut busting funny. Not boring but only worth watching once. You pays your money you makes your choice!

I very rarely if have ever written a review before however this was really disappointing and feel obliged to warn others not to waste their hard earned Saturday evening on this film… meandering and boring… avoid.

A very puerile film with unconvincing acting and with an hour still to go it was such a boring pointless story I just switched off. The 2 minute preview used up all the good bits. Don't waste your money.

It's a waste of nearly two hours of your life. I'm at a loss to explain why anybody would fund such rubbish.

I'm not sure I would put this in the thriller category, it's definitely a great comedy.

I didn't get bored which is good for me.

It started to feel a bit scooby do esk midway through but that added to the fun.

I don't get the bad reviews! I get everything is subjective but this film is a fantastic well written, well acted and directed picture.

It has two fantastic central performances with great supporting performances, from Matt Bomer and new comer Angourie Rice.

The film is funny but not in your Bad Neighbours, Pineapple Express kind of way. It's a more subtle sarcastic humour with random bouts of perverse humour.

The film is well built up with great character development and character diversity. Each character has a role to play with none feeling underdeveloped. Even minor characters like a hotel barmen gets good development in a couple of seconds.

The film knows LA it's a character within itself, it's a massive part of the tone.

The film is overall fantastic. It's well built up, intense when needed. And beautifully written with Shane Black proving he's one of thee best writers out there.

This film blows, seriously. Film noir, it ain't. These two (Crowe and Clown Boy) are about as hard-boiled as eggs benedict. Bogart's probably spinning in his grave by now . . . just avoid this tiresome mess.

Its a badly written , badly delivered story that makes you wonder whether these two stars have any self respect . For about 15 minutes it felt like it might be great because I trust both actors but then like mist, the gravitas, honesty and integrity was gone and straight into a typical meaningless factory line production to try and milk the public of a few dollars.

We watched this all the way through waiting for some big laughs or a plot twist, but the movie fizzled out after a bizarre and lazy story line that went nowhere. A shame, given the actors in it, but definitely one to skip.

The viewers who have slated this film (eg. "Absolute tosh" etc.) must prefer their films less complex, perhaps with more action and shorter words. Because this is in fact a cracker of a film. It really surprised me actually, because while I fully expected it to be entertaining, I didn't expect the sparkling and original wit that this script has, or the classy performances pulled off by Crowe and Gosling (as good as they are, particularly Crowe). It was almost like a modern day Pink Panther, dare I say it?? Entertaining throughout, it put a smile on my face all the way through and had me cracking up several times. Totally brilliant and highly recommended - you'd be mad to miss it. And as for those naysayers' reviews, well, what a load of "Tosh" indeed! Love it, love it, love it.

Great film, both Ryan and Russell work well together, plenty of laugh out loud moments.

Don't be fooled by the negative reviews. Not sure what these viewers were expecting — it's not a Bourne film, or a CGI-stuffed Michael Bay extravaganza. This is a nice movie with cool, imperfect and flawed characters that stumble their way through a conspriricy involving murder and corruption. But talk about a 21st Century take on the private eye flick — i!n the end the bad guys win!! So sort of a weird negative end, but great fun to follow the 'Nice Guys' antics. Nice interaction between the main characters and well written dialogue. I hope this partnership makes a return.

Well worth renting.

Really terrible and I really like both the actors too and wanted to like this but I just fast forwarded most of it and was thankful I did not go to the cinema and spend more to see it. Oh dear

What a great film. A must see

About three hours longer than it needs to be. Self indulgent "knowing plot" takes itself way too seriously but doesn't really have anything to say. I guess it is well shot.

The story has promise but in favour of 'attempted comedy' unfortunately the only bits I found funny were literally in the trailer for the film. Very irritating.

Man did this go on and on and on.

This is dire. Zzzzz-worthy, unimaginative, dull script plus two performances from Gosling and Crowe that seemed like they were phoned in from a place that doesn't even have phones. Avoid, avoid and then avoid some more.

Film of the year so far.

This is thin, very thin. Which might be okay if it was more funny, or had a better story, or the chemistry was irresistible, or any combination therein. But it isn't. It's just thin, and, as much as I wanted to like it, it's just not there.

Whilst is not up there with his strongest material, see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for that, this is neverthless a solid intro to the work of Shane Black if you've never seen his work before. The leads are solid enough but lack the real comic timing of people who have acted with his other scripts - Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr in Kiss Bang Bang, Bruce Willis and Damon Wayons in The Last Boy Scout and Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson in The Long Kiss Goodnight - get those down you first!!!

I have not seen a classic feeling film like this for ages. I'm young and I enjoy these tent pole films and franchises like Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc but these are the kind of movies, why I fell in love with cinema. They include an original story with cliché elements mixed in to the formula in clever ways.

I want more films like this but it's like asking to score gold every time you see a movie. So once in a while you'll get a diamond like this.
