Description

Four couples plan to reunite for a “marriage intervention” disguised as a fun-filled weekend at a lakeside vacation home. In an attempt to push Ruby (Cobie Smulders) and her husband Peter (Vincent Piazza) toward divorce, Annie (Melanie Lynskey) and her fiancé Matt (Jason Ritter) have gathered family and friends to address their failing marriage. Ruby’s sister Jessie (Clea DuVall), her girlfriend Sarah (Natasha Lyonne), old buddy Jack (Ben Schwartz), and “baby-stranger” Lola (Alia Shawkat) engage in various games while trying to maintain the illusion of a fun weekend together. As it all falls apart, close quarters bring longstanding issues to the surface. As each couple reels from these revelations, they reach out to each other in unexpected ways, struggling to express their devotion and conceding that things may never be perfect. New bonds form and old wounds heal as all see the result when the best of intentions comes out in the most awkward fashion.

Great, enjoyable ensemble piece!

Loved, loved, loved this film! It may not sound appealing given that it's a group of friends coming together to split up two of their friends, but this Clea DuVall has done exceptionally well, making a great film simply by sticking to real life and making such great casting choices. The entire cast are all amazing in various ways but special mentions goes to Melanie Lynskey, Cobie Smulders and Vincent Piazza.
Melanie Lynskey is brilliant. She has such great comedic timing that she (along with her character) provides a good balance especially when there's all that drama going on in the movie with the intervention. Made me chuckle a lot!!
As for Cobie and Vincent, they are amazing!! Little is known about their characters, Ruby & Peter, apart from the fact that they have 3 kids together. Despite the lack of background info and time to know these characters, Cobie and Vincent have managed to make people really root for their characters and their marriage. As an audience you desperately wish that these two can make it through this tough phase and avoid a divorce. They are so, so convincing that I even shed a few tears when their characters had that massive final argument!!
If you are looking for some great acting, this is definitely for you!
