As a legitimate lover of horror movies, this movie was truly horrific. This has one of the most horrific, sadistic and unnecessarily violent scenes commitment to film. I enjoyed the movie as a whole, but this scene turned my stomach, you have to draw the line somewhere… mine is here.

This film deserves to be watched. It’s a great story and a real change from all the usual western films. The acting is top notch and the film is a stand out and should be viewed. Give it a go. It is violent but it is required viewing.

Not for the squeamish, but the film stands out for it's confidence and poise. Watch out for this director.

It’s inaccurate to refer to this as action packed, it’s not that kind of western, it’s wayyy better than that, it’s a adventure drama horror with occasional dark rye humour. I’m sure in yrs to come it will be considered a unique under the radar masterpiece as more and more ppl become aware of it through tv and other mediums. Top notch cast as well. Seems way to under the radar for the A list cast and production values. 10 /10

Cannot see what all the fuss is about.
Yes it’s kind of a b movie theme, but you only really get a sense of this towards the middle.
Secondly, Kurt Russell was in The Thing which has a similar vibe albeit much more gripping than bone tomahawk (BT) and in my opinion he acted the role in BT brilliantly. Great actor. No shame for taking this role.
Thirdly, the gore ain’t that bad. It’s really quite tame once you get through the first few minutes. I had hoped for more to be honest. Having said that, it is quite realistic which is maybe why some people had a reaction to it.
Fourthly, yes it can be a bit slow, but I didn’t feel this spoiled my enjoyment of the film. I didn’t find myself fast-forwarding through it. It’s really okay.
In conclusion, maybe just don’t take it too seriously, don’t watch it with anyone squeamish and don’t expect fast action. I’m not sure horror westerns are meant to be fast action.
Will I add this to my collection? Not right now, but I can say it’s deffo growing on me.

Long, slow, avoid

About "that scene". Yes, it is horrifically brutal... even if you turn away from the screen (as I had to). But then this is a horror, not a western. The fact that you continually forget this while watching is testament to the directorial and cinematographic craft on display.
That said, I do feel that even for a horror, that scene and another right near the very end are somewhat childish in their extremity. It's as if the filmmakers became "so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should". 97% of the movie is gloriously filmed with incredible performances from the cast. Yet, as the credits roll, I guarantee you'll only have those two scenes in your mind, and for some time afterwards, which is a shame.
On balance then, it's a brilliant film, marred somewhat by lack of restraint.

The director showed very poor judgement in graphically portraying a horrible murder and dismemberment because that's all you remember about the movie. Up to that point it was enjoyable if you like slow burn storytelling. Also, the end is contrived and not a credible outcome. Poor.

Excellent!

A stone cold classic. The fact that it's garnering 5 star and 1 star reviews tells you all you need to know. It's not for everyone - but what's good that is?

Incredibly slow to start, then a bit of gore. Got swayed by the rating on IMDb .... wish I hadn't.

When take the context of the film - which gives some inclination of it's savagery in the opening scenes - the wild wilderness of the mid eighteen hundreds, no doubt such cruel ness existed, so maybe did such creatures too as depicted here.
However, I too was unprepared for the slaughter scene which totally knocked me sideways, the imagery stayed with me for days.
Not sure if that was to add shock value to a - what appears to be a low budget film, with relatively unknown Actors with the exception of Kurt Russell.
But it was a well produced little film, kept you glued to the screen, even if it
did contain was one of the most brutal scenes probably in film history.
Be warned - you will be shocked....

AWESOME!!!

Personally I don't believe the context of the film justified the depiction of such a shocking act in a particular scene. Having said that the film does portray the strength and enduring will of the human spirit. At times it is thrilling and ingenious. To summarise, I didn't feel good watching this movie. I found it quite sickening.

Terrible, don't bother!

Appalling. Can't understand how anyone could give this more than 2 stars. Very slow to get going but doesn't use the time to build the characters. When it does get going it's far fetched and unlikely. Really not worth watching unless you genuinely have nothing else's in the world to do with your time.

It took me a while to figure out how to write a review. There was no way I was going to end the evening without getting on here and leaving this I was so motivated.
What a dreadful film. Seriously, don't spend any money on this garbage or waste your time watching it. Kurt Russell must be embarrassed he had anything to do with this.

Possibly a one off in the putative genre of the western horror. This film contains possibly the most visceral death scene of any film ever made. Not for the faint hearted.
