Description

Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science-fiction, Spielberg-ian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template – and the high-water mark – with his debut feature, Donnie Darko. Initially beset with distribution problems, it would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium. Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking and in possession of an imaginary friend, a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days 06 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds. During that time he will navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death in the form of a falling jet engine, follow Frank’s maladjusted instructions and try to maintain the space-time continuum. Described by its director as “The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick”, Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast – pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katherine Ross, and television favourite Noah Wyle – and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran. This brand-new restoration, carried out exclusively for this release by Arrow Films, allows a modern classic to finally receive the home video treatment it deserves.

Proper 4k upgrade handled by Arrow. This is how it should be done. An example for Warner bros, Entertainment one, Momentum Pictures etc who always seem to bungle it.
Existing purchase upgraded to 4k. Directors cut available alongside the theatrical via iTunes extras, and loads of extras, commentaries and Q&As.

This film is the most best movie I’ve ever seen, I can even watch it again and again. At first it left me puzzled when I was younger, but now I have my own interpretation of the movie, which is amazing! I know the characters names, and when you remember the characters names it shows you enjoy the film and are captured in its creativeness and it entertainment. I actually am only 15, but to me this movie explains a lot of things to me on how I should see life in its self. Like should we be considering a parallel universe? Or should we just class it as amazing work from a talented young director? Congratulations to the director Kelly, who managed to pull together a movie that is interesting, intelligent and a credit to their future career.

I don’t understand, the description states this is 4K?

Thought provoking and extremely well acted. You can't watch once needs to be seen multiple times to appreciate. To me it's a masterpiece

Great film, but yet again the Director's Cut is consigned to the special features

The title just about says it all: 'Great film, but yet again the Director's Cut is consigned to the special features.'
I don't know why this has become de rigeur for UK iTunes, but it's darned inconvenient if you want to download for later. As it stands, I don't like the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko as much as the Theatrical Cut, but iTunes really need to sort this out. Batman v Superman had similar issues. So, five stars for the film, minus one star for the annoying presentation.
Donnie Darko is a terrific, eerie movie, beautifully shot on a very low budget. Its mysteries provoke discussion to this day. It's notable for kickstarting the careers of the Gyllenhaal siblings and Daveigh Chase. Sadly, Richard Kelly, the writer/director hasn't ever really followed up the movie with anything that's drawn as big a cult following, but if there's only one cinema film you could have made in your life and be remembered for, you could do a lot worse than Donnie Darko! Arrow's restoration is great – I actually pre-ordered the Blu-ray set, forgot about it and planned to send it back and just get the iTunes version. As it turns out Blu-ray set is too gorgeous not keep, but an extra tenner on top for the iTunes version's portability is well worth it. If you can't get the Blu-ray, this version is well worth the money.

Anniversary special Edition on sd as well.... but no special features? Makes no sense. I get it's not really fair to give the film itself a 3 star; one of the best features of that generation and I've gone for the full hd if anything for the music video that I haven't seen done that way.
The rating is more directed at itunes itself, seems a bit of a scam to label something across both platforms... when it is not.

I can't wait to carry this around in my pocket, it's such an unique and special film. It's perfect for people who are going through a tough time and are searching for ways to experience it from a third person perspective. Its surreal style displays that of mental illness, but may not agree with everyone.

Incredible Film. Incredible Extras

One of my all time faves - a great cult classic. I think this is just a 4K Restoration but in 1080p HD like it was done for the Blu-ray. Went to the BFI screening of it recently, looked incredible. Can't wait to watch it and a lot of the extra stuff as well.
