Description

Valerian and The City Of A Thousand Planets is the visually spectacular new adventure film from Luc Besson, the legendary director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers. In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

Why the 4K downgrade?

When I bought this on iTunes it was available as a 4K film, now that option is no longer available. Any idea why I’ve lost this option?

Loved this. Really great movie - imaginative with two great leads. Much like The Fifth Element, but I prefer it. If you liked that then this is a safe bet. Crazy how it wasn’t more popular really! 👍

Was looking forward to this movie - can anybody try their hand at the movie bussiness these days? Maybe I should try acting - cause believe me, it would be an improvement on these no talent cardboard actors - so so bad - watch it for a laugh!

DeHaan can’t act

No idea how Dane DeHaan landed the lead in this movie. This is the worst film I’ve seen since The Winter Soldier

I will love sci-fi and I wanted to love this movie but aside from intermittently good visuals it is just a very flawed movie. Terrible plot, far too much yap yap yap,, poorly cast, not very enthralling action scenes and while some of the CGI is excellent in other places the CGI (or indeed the character creations) are so poor they really distract from the movie. Apparently it's based on a comic from a long time ago, and this really shines through in this movie, it feels outdated many times. It's hard to get big budget sci-fi wrong (as usually they're just nice to look at anyway) but this movie is so poor in so many ways it's not very watchable.

Epic sensation. MORE!!

Mostly underwhelmed and sniffy reviews for this film on its release... but what a ride. Love Besson’s bonkers non-Hollywood sci-fi. Incredible visuals and creativity all over the show. It’s just great fun.

Very enjoyable film

I liked this film. It is a long film but don’t let that put you off as the effects are great. Story was good and on the whole the acting was ok. I’m not going to take a star off for the acting as I really did like it and that be just petty. I rented this but I may buy it when it’s cheaper.

I enjoyed this movie. It was highly imaginative and full of stunning visuals. Cara Develigne was good but Rihanna stole the show with just a few minutes of amazing dancing and editing. The love story wasn't convincing but this movie deserves to become a family sci-fi classic over time.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Good special effects and world-building. However, there is no chemistry between the two lead actors and that was essential to the film.

First five minutes of the alien utopia is lovely...then meh....terrible terrible film, dialogue cliched and lame, acting poor and stilted, narrative pointless and contrived. Few great visuals, but 90% pants, avoid.

Beautifully made movie as you would expect from this director.. but why not 4K. I can only imagine how much more beautiful this would look!!

No 4k HDR because U.K. Lionsgate too lazy. A good film. Mostly.

Wonderful film visuals wise but I was a bit lost at times. The narrative and plot are somewhat confused. This is mainly due to so many side ventures that do and don’t relate to the plot. It’s one of those you have to keep track of but it doesn’t quite engage enough to make you do that. So the danger is if you drift off a bit you’ll find yourself lost.
4k hdr please.

I am trying so hard to get through this movie 3 weeks and lots attempts. I still have 40 minutes to go. Its slow, not funny, average effects and the acting and script writing is questionable.
Typically a fan of this genre but really not on the same wavelength for this movie.

The opening sequence is easily the strongest part of the movie. The visuals are stunning and the story setup is compelling. Unfortunately it never lives up to the potential shown here.
My biggest complaint is that the dialogue is appaling throughout. A spectacular number of groan-inducing lines. My second biggest is that the central relationship is frankly disgusting to watch. He's a nasty creep who gets the girl. I am so tired of this obnoxious cliche. Thirdly, a large part of the movie appears to be wacky for the sake of being wacky. If you like that, fine, I think it brought the movie down.
There is a decent story here, however, and the central plot is one that I would like to see explored by competent writers. Additionally the perfromances were fine, Rhianna the standout but with woefully little screen time. The leads could have been stronger but they weren't distractingly bad.
Finally the effects work is first class and the action is exciting and memorable.
Definitely a rent not a buy. I probably wouldn't watch this again.

Sadly a waste of time

Massively let down by terrible dialogue and a storyline that just gets completely lost. I’d say the actors were not great as well, but they really didn’t have much to work with I’m afraid. Honestly don’t waste your time watching it, you’ll just be disappointed.

Cos of places like Rotten Tomatoes Flixster or IMDb, thousands of strange people who don't understund or don't like Sci - Fi or Luc Bessone I avoid to go to the cinema for this movie, what now after watching it I am totally regret.
This is very good sci-fi/fantasy movie with very good story and great special effects. I was thinking maybe Cara who is not actress did bad performance but she was excellent ! It was fun all two hours over and I am definitely going to watch this again. Like a Fifth Element this is a great show with great word created for it. No dissapointment at all. People who didnt like it are just too complicated to understund entertiment and good show.

Luc B make amazing films. There's nothing like them and this is a brilliant film full of imagination. If Willy Wonker made films, he'd make these kind of films. Cara was amazing. Hats off, she owned her bit. I will now happily add this to my collection. Sadly regret not seeing it at the Cinema.

You have to have a very low IQ to enjoy this vacuous tosh. No jeopardy, no chemistry and no plot. Lots of goofy aliens and pretty colours.

I really thought this movie would be good viewing despite the panning it received by critics. Remember the John Carter film? That too got bad cinema reviews but it was actually quite watchable at the time. Valerian is woeful. Boring, muddled and confusing storyline and just not a good watch. It looks wonderful on my new UHD HDR TV but even the effects can’t save it.
If you have to watch this then don’t buy it but rent it when it becomes available if you must. Hugely disappointing.

I'm a hug fan of Luc Besson and love his crazy characters and visualizations but the story here is nonexistent. Spy Kids is more complex and exciting. Wooden acting, even from Clive Owen who I usually rate very highly. Currently at the 1hr 8mins mark and simply can't face watching any more. Bought rather than rented too i was so confident Besson had produced another winner #morefoolme

I did not expect this to be as good as it was, this was a visual treat and certainly an entertaining sci-fi / fantasy resulting in a jolly good pop corn movie.
It's not a serious film, it has daft creatures and a mad storyline you would expect with the like of Star Wars and Fifth Element. Ignore the negative reviews from the press, jugde it for yourself.
