Just saw this at the pictures today. Gary Oldman is excellent in this. The prosthetic makeup aside, which is exceptional btw, Oldman’s take on Churchill is very well observed. He doesn’t overdo Winston’s speech impediment, and has taken his time to study the man. Set over a few weeks in May 1940, as the Wehrmacht blitzkriegs over France and Belgium, the film follows the events in parliament as Neville Chamberlain is forced to resign as Prime Minister. Who to take over? Well, it wasn’t such a ‘done deal’ as most would think. The political machinations behind the public view were as toxic then as they are today. The result of course, is a matter of history, but it is really good to see this done so well, and exciting to see the story play out. Even though I must have heard it a score of times, when Gary Oldman, in the Commons, strikes up with “...we shall fight them in the fields...”, it’s the man himself speaking. A powerful playing of Winston Churchill, the best yet. The supporting cast is all very good, not a wrong note amongst them. Kristin Scott-Thomas was very good as Winston’s wife, Clemmie; again, the best I’ve seen. Realistic sets, uniform and clothing, though I did spot a rogue 1953 Ford Popular in a 1940 street! Ha! But I can forgive them that. A fantastic film, with a superlative performance from Gary Oldman .
