Description

Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight. From writer/director Ari Aster and starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, and Will Poulter.

Aster is a director to keep an eye on

Loved this - even more than the fantastic Hereditary. If you are missing the extras, you can find the deleted scenes from the DC on YouTube. Yes, would have been nice to get the same version on US iTunes, but let’s not blame Apple, we can put that one down to the distributor in the UK - Entertainment.

Just all a bit odd

Not my type of film, I bought the hype surrounding it was the unfounded - thought it was neither horror nor thriller just some art house hipster wierdo film with a few shocking scenes. Bizarre is what it was’

Don’t waste your time

Saw this film in the cinema and spent the last 30mins trying to control my hysterical laughter.
Starts of with great promise but soon descends into a long monotonous slog of a film, punctuated by bizarre moments of pretentious nonsense and extreme moments of shocking violence.
If you can make it to the end of this film without bursting out laughing or drawing comparisons to grumpy cat in a flower dress, then you’re a better person then me.
Save your money and your time!

Brilliant!!

This film is definitely a artistic masterpiece!! I understand why some people don’t see this film for what it is but I feel you need to see it from a different type of perspective! And the lead actress’s acting is just exceptional!!

Worse film I have honestly ever watched

I am actually livid with fact I’ve wasted over two hours of my life watching this. I can honestly say it is the worse film I ever seen.
How anyone can give this film a good rating is beyond me!

Waste of time and money

Normally I don’t mind horror films, but this one is probably the worst movie of the decade. It’s not just unnecessarily graphicly violent and disturbing, it’s pretentiously boring, despite its beautiful location. I didn’t even watch it to the end.

Went in completely oblivious

Had not even seen a trailer nor read anything about this film before going into the cinema in the spur of the moment.
Just picked Midsommar from the movies that were about to start.
For the 1st act, I was almost giving up on it - the characters were being developed well so I knew something was going to change fairly soon. Plus the continuous hinting that all is not as perfect as the idyllic surroundings. Then everything goes sideways when the main premise kicks in. Not the film ?I was expecting but a masterpiece in writing nonetheless.
A proper modern day horror without needing any over the top gore or random jump-scares to portray the sheer terror the people would have felt when it dawned on them what was in store.
All in all, I’m really glad ?I saw it - more so that I didn’t know what I was going to see.
5 stars for sure. It is a bit of a slow burner to begin with but when it gets going you realise it was needed to build on the suspense of what was to come.
Great acting, great story, great film. And it was good that it was filmed on location in the beautiful country opposed to just a hollywood recreation of another country. Which they could have done easily but glad they didn’t.
Not something I’d watch again in a hurry as the best part of the movie was the suspense and eventually finding out what is going on.

Outstanding

Thought this was superb. Very strange but I much preferred this to Hereditary, great location, very creepy and off beat but good fun. Would want to buy the extended cut really.

Definitely worth watching

An emotionally charged and beautifully shot horror film with a sense of dread that builds slowly throughout until the shocking ending. A truly amazing horror film. It’s a film about relationships crumbling and ending, and it’s about feeling isolated and the need to connect. Florence Pugh is outstanding in this film and you truly go through her character’s journey with her. Yes, it is a lengthy film, but it is definitely worth the time to watch this film. And if you like gore, some scenes won’t leave you disappointed.

Don’t waste hours of your life

I have to say although I watched it to the end and felt it was well shot it was a terrible rip of off Wicker Man. Good acting but awful film and a complete waste of time

Rip Off

Not even the directors cut available on Blu Ray for the same price as this in shops. Looks like I’ll be buying my first BR in years then.

A brilliant film that I saw twice in the cinema but where is the Director’s Cut?

If the Wizard of Oz were a horror movie...

I was apprehensive to watch this. So many “horror” and “thrillers” have little depth to them and rely on jump scares and gore, so for a while I avoided the genre altogether. Ari Aster has definitely piqued my interest in the genre again. The attention to detail, the unsettling feeling throughout. The cinematography! I love the nod to The Shinning as they travel through Sweden.
This will not be everyone’s cup of tea, if you’re looking to be frightened with thrills and jumps, or looking for a typical slasher then I’d honestly don’t bother watching this. If you’re looking for a slow burner, a thriller to make you think and feel out of your comfort zone then give Midsommar a watch.

I just don’t get the appeal...

Having watched both Hereditary and this I can only say that by the end of both films I wish I had been either beheaded or burnt in a pyramid. Both films left me unconnected to the characters (not caring whether they died or not). Both films took me several sittings to get through having to force myself to get to the end... dull, tedious and a waste of time.

Great movie rubbish iTunes release

I pre purchased this fully expecting it to be in 4K and with the directors cut. So getting neither is not only a massive disappointment but a complete rip off for £13.99.

Ok folk horror movie

This is an ok folk horror movie! One thing I say is it is beautifully shot. Very artistic however nothing new has been added to the genre. If you seen the original Wicker Man then you know what to expect. Sweden is beautiful and the main lead is good. I just wish they added something new

This is the worst film ever!

I should have known that a film released to Itunes whilst still showing at the cinema would be bad but I didn’t realise just how bad. The good reviews are taking the mick so you waste your money. Trust me, this is one bad movie. So glad I rented instead of bought - I would be kicking myself now wasting anything more than a fiver! Avoid, avoid avoid!!!!

Colourful, mesmerising, gross, slow-burning, shocking and hilarious

I was privileged to enjoy this film at the cinema and was not disappointed. The director delivers a smorgasbord of emotions, through atmospheric imagery and epic Wagnerian scores, so it would be rude to think that this is a conventional horror film. On the contrary this is a monumental work of art aimed at the open minded and thoroughly deserves a category all of its own. Quite ironic that although the film features a multitude of peasants, irrespective of origin, it does not give the impression that it was aimed to be viewed by them.

No Directors Cut nor 4K

ITunes U.S. includes the directors cut and the Constructing Hälsingland feature. Not to mention it’s also a 4K transfer. Why are none of these features available in the U.K. store? Yet Entertainment Film wants to charge £13.99 for this?

Unsettling..

Loved Hereditary but I have to say that I preferred this. More unsettling than scary, it’s a film that stays with you once the credits have rolled. Definitely recommended if you’re a fan of horror movies...
However, I’ve given a 1 star rating because, unlike the US version, there’s NO extras which, considering it’s retailing at £13 is disgraceful. So, 5 stars for the movie (I can’t recommend it highly enough), 1 star for iTunes (Apple) for seemingly wanting to fleece their UK customers.. Do what I’ll most likely do now and go grab the Blu-ray, which appears to be significantly better value than this..

This title deserves better...

This movie is a real masterpiece and Ari Aster is a true genius in film making. And with his movies being released under Entertainment In Video Distributors, his releases are not getting the real treatment they truly deserve and the company is robbing us of its quality. I hope one day we will have the Directors Cut see the light of day on iTunes platform. Even if it’s a separate upload I would be very happy to pay again just to see the real form of this terrific movie!.
