Well, one thing I can say with a 100% certainty that Joaquin Phoenix is simply transcendent in the role and if he doesn’t get a nomination at least for this than there is no justice in the universe. He is magnetic and simply mesmerising to watch.
The film itself is good, not great. My first thought coming out of the cinema was that this story did not have to be told. But they made it and it is basically Scorseese’s The king of comedy, Taxi Driver, Fincher’s Fight Club, Schumacher’s Fallen Down, and Polanski’s The tenant all rolled into one.
It’s not very subtle with it’s themes and messages (although it doesn’t have to be, it could be though). It systematically pushes certain elements and beats that are very relevant today (and provoke a response), therefore is much less honest and more calculating than the aforementioned films that did not have such agendas.
And finally, as I suspected from the very beginning: this did not have to be called Joker. What probably happened here, is that Philips and his writing partners had an idea, but they couldn’t get the funding, so someone at WB in their eternal wisdom said: make it as a Joker origin story. And here we are. Which is quite genius if you think about it as it brings in a completely different layer of movie goers also who would not have watched this otherwise.
Anyway, the film is good, and if for nothing else for Phoenix’s performance alone must be watched. But to me it is not the best representation of the mythos, and the character.
Well, those are my thoughts. You guys enjoy it.
