For me personally I absolutely loved everything about this movie, from the acting, music score, set design, sweeping visuals and a very thoughtful pacing that allows the audience to take it all in. Can’t wait for it’s sequel’s.

Probably the most incredible looking film I have ever seen. The book has finally been realised on film. I’m a big fan of the David Lynch film, but this is in a different league. It is slow at times and the dialogue can be occasionally lost, but the sheer spectacle takes your breath away.

I’ve not read the book, nor seen any previous attempts at bringing it to screen, so I didn’t know what it was about or what the story was. I still didn’t when the credits rolled and had to basically look it up online.
Visually spectacular, decent enough performances. Slow and honestly quite boring for anyone not already a fan prior to seeing it.

The young actors playing Paul and Chani really nail the roles and the rest of the cast are excellent. The ornithopters are the first time I have seen a believable rendition. I have watched it 4 times now just soaking up the visuals. I like the David Lynch and the TV versions as well, as all 3 bring out different understandings of the book.

The slowest storytelling. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be a trilogy, as is the norm today. I understand that the novels are complex, but Lynch didn't do that bad a job in compressing the narrative into 2'15". At 2'35", we are not halfway through yet... The party of friends who watched this with me are not in the least interested in continuing with the sequel(s).

I have been reading and rereading the Dune books for years and years, and this film has brought to life what I pictured in my minds eye on my first page turn. I love the way the film brings the immensity of the Guild liners, and how the wings of the ornithopters are like giant dragonflies. In fact I don’t think there is anything in this retelling of an epic tale that I dislike. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but personally I can’t wait for part two! This blasts the 1984 David Lynch version, and anything since out the water!

I loved this movie and is a beautiful example of technical excellence. From the cinematography, editing, sounds and customs this film doesn’t fail. The acting is beautiful and the special effects are flawless. The director knows his Sci-Fi and I can’t wait for part II next year.

this film for me was really boring and slow even worse than eternals and that is saying something - really poor - seen more action from a snail - the music / score was incredibly annoying continuous screeching - i cant understand anyone who rates this highly unless they are paid to give good reviews - this is my opinion only up to others to make theirs

Slow

Not for everyone and certainly not the big epic piece it’s being made out to be. Acting is not great and the story moves at a snails pace. Strictly for readers of the books only.
Save your time and money.

This 're-make' lacks the dynamics, characters and storyline to the original movie, so be prepared for disappointment. Then wait for the second half many months later? I don't think so.

Interesting visuals, but lack lister story and dialogue

For such a great classic, both book and film, the writers and directors had a lot of reference to use but somehow fell short of actually paying any attention. The dialogue was ok, but not well developed, with some key points glossed over. The acting was in a similar boat, it was fine with pretty good fight scenes, but most of the time the cast whispered, and when set against a background of booming music, it was almost lost. The visuals are the primary selling point, with wonderful cgi and landscapes. However, for a nearly three hour movie, I would expect to have had the whole story told, and not as a part one teaser. To think of having to sit through another three hours to complete the plot does not excite me for this.

I’ll tell you straight, I was going to wait until part 2 was made, but thought - ‘What the heck, I’m on holiday…’. and so I watched it. Now just to note, I actually love the wacky 80’s version by David Lynch, and enjoyed the tv mini-series. But is this version any good? The answer is simply “yes!” Of course in my very own opinion. The big question though… is this something you could re-watch - knowing it’s only part one? The answer: “Yes”. 2.5 hrs shot by, didn’t even notice the time passing. This is a flippin’ ace sci-fi, which is serious, and well structured. So, undecided? Just friggin’ watch it. That’s all I have to say.

Prefer the original but…

It’s a good film but lacks the acting talent of the original. It’s a good story. Let’s see if it follows the book with the next film.
The sleeper doesn’t seem to want to awaken and it can be a bit of a snorefest at times.

If you have read or watched any 'DUNE' you will likly enjoy this film, the soundscape may be difficult or jarring for some, but this was made for 'Cinema', that said if you have seen it in the cinema you will no doubt enjoy watching at home.

Bit pricey, but a good file nonetheless.

This remains reasonably faithful to the original film whilst being less rushed as its split into 2. Can’t wait for part two. It does feel a little bit bleaker or less colourful than the original but somehow feels more real for it. The visuals are good, the music is fantastic and the acting is solid. As the first part to deserve 4 or 5 stars but I can understand those who disagree as the point at which it stops is anti-climactic.

A masterpiece

I loved the first three books as a child and enjoyed, in part, both the adaptations by David Lynch and John Harrison.
However, the swift running time and overly camp acting by one particular actor (!) was David Lynch’s downfall and the limited budget and, in part, poor acting results in a slightly (particularly now) disappointing experience watching John Harrison’s version.
This new version replicates or improves on that imagery given in my mind’s eye when reading the original book. The acting is almost flawless.
I think that Timothy Chamalet inhabits the role of the boy learning the skills to become a leader almost perfectly and the supporting cast contains some of the greatest living actors around today. Any minor issues I had with Timothy are buffed out thanks to sterling performances from Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac and Jason Mamoa.
The music perfectly compliments the action and the budget on the special effects is well spent. For me, the pace was propulsive and the script was well honed. I am thoroughly looking forward to the 2bd part. I am confident that the film is in the right hands. Roll on 2023!

Main character has a series of vision about saving dune by the time the visions start to happen the film then ends think it would have been a better as a series defiantly not worth the price tag

It was good, but a bit flat like the monotone sets. Preferred the drama and colourful rendition by David Lynch who brought it all to life in a vibrant way.
But kind of expected this from Villeneuve, who seems to like things low key and brooding, rather than baroque and exciting.

I didn’t get the chance to see this on the big screen and I really wish I had! The visuals bring the Dune universe wonderfully to life and the sound design is fantastic. As some others have pointed out there are times when the score can be a bit heavy against some of the character’s dialogue but this is forgivable IMO as you totally get swept away with the music anyway. For those new to the Dune universe there’s probably a lot to take in, but you’ll also enjoy what’s to come - bring on part 2!

As dry as the sands of Arakis.

Very disappointed. The 1989s version was far better. Built story and characters quickly and told whole thing in one movie.
This was an expensive, filmed in the dark load of worm cast. Somebody let the directors sway with the shock of going from dark cave to bright desert just that little too often.
Maybe the second film will get more right? My fear is that it doesn’t.
There again, fear is a the mind killer ………..

This film is visually stunning and has great atmosphere and world building. I found the story a little boring and I feel like things could have moved along more quickly.
This isn’t something I usually complain about and I can usually deal with quiet talking and music playing, but this film seems especially bad for actors mumbling quietly while music plays and I just couldn’t make out some of what was said. This isn’t really acceptable when you’re expected to understand the world you’re being dropped into.

First there will be normal version of part 1. Then an extended director’s cut. Then there will be normal part 2. Then a normal box set of both parts. Then an extended director’s cut of part 2. Then a director’s cut extended edition of both parts. Then an anniversary deluxe edition with 2 extra comments from the cinematographer…
I will probably wait 3 years and buy the extended edition boxset… 🤨

Yeah. Same here. Like all great movie adaptations, it knows its source material well, and reframes it so it works flawlessly as a film. A brilliant imagining of Herbert’s world and half of the first book.
