Description

The breathtaking Broadway phenomenon becomes a soaring cinematic event as Tony®, Grammy® and Emmy® Award winner Ben Platt reprises his role as an anxious, isolated high schooler aching for understanding and belonging amid the chaos and cruelty of the social-media age. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Chbosky, Dear Evan Hansen features music and lyrics by the Oscar®, Grammy® and Tony®-winning songwriting team of Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), including two brand new songs and the iconic anthem “You Will Be Found.”

Great songs

Slow to start off with but way more interesting in the second half, even if morally questionable.

Disappointing compared to the live show

A really great production, and great music however characters have been changed and it feels like it’s been softened to be more politically correct – which is completely against the whole point of the musical which used to poke fun at the way everything had to be correct or you would be an outsider. Very, very disappointing to have had the Dads role (Larry Murphy) taken out almost completely, with one of the most pivotal songs regarding the baseball glove and fatherhood completely removed. They also made Larry her stepfather, which was completely unnecessary and adds complexity. Why couldn’t it just have been a normal family like in the stage show? Two extra songs added in for Alana which is a completely miscast role in the movie who is now a skinny popular girl, which makes no sense when (in the live show) the whole motivation for her starting the Connor project was because (like Evan) she was not popular. Still enjoyable, but just so very disappointing compared to the edgy live version.
