Aside from being a masterpiece of cinematography, scoring and structure, this film is also one of the greatest modern examples of storytelling in any medium. The fact it takes one medium (comic books) and successfully tells the story in film, using clever substitutes for traditional comic book tropes is in itself genius and to be honest I am not sure any other film has pulled that off. They should teach the story telling method in both film school and literature classes as it is a legend, origin story, myth and character driven arc all in one. There is no aspect of this film left to chance and showcases the mastery of the talent involved. It is without question Shyamalan’s finest artistic achievement- the fact that stands 20 years after he made it is testament to that. Oh, and it’s also a cracking movie that anyone can enjoy just as a movie.

On the blurb of this movie said that it was a supernatural thriller. I really liked the look of the sixth sense but was unable to watch it. Because it was the same director and writer I thought it would be a great horror, but guess what: it turned out to be a terrible, slow super hero movie. It was rubbish altogether!

Love this movie, intelligent sad at places especially the way Willis portrays the hero who is in the middle of losing his family. Not like the usual superhero yarn nowadays with endless explosions women in skin tight outfits and pointless and cheesy one liners. Best movies this director has made.

I rate this film very highly it is one of the most entertaining films I have watched for months. The ending is the surprise of the evening.

I have rated this 4 stars as I feel that too many people rate 5 stars just because they have enjoyed it. If it were possible I would give 41/2 as it was better than four.

This is one of those films that's slipped under the radar. As such, not many people have heard of it, or even seen it.

Remedy that! I would seriously recommend watching this, as it was the first film to do something different with the superhero genre. The acting is absolutely superb, the plot is very well written, and there's no other film out there like it. My only criticism is that the ending's a bit anti-climactic. But this isn't an action film; it's a thriller.

This is M Night at his best. I actually liked it better than The 6th Sense.

Shyamalan made a great movie with 6th sense and that film had a strong narrative. I have not seen anything by him since then that is any good. He is a drama-queen who would like you to think that he is a story-teller.

When people talk about super hero movies they always forget about this one!

I dont know why to be honest as I think this is one of the best.

Not many films grip me at all but there are a few scenes in this film that definitely do.

To me (I know this will sound stupid) I think this is the one of most 'realistic' super hero movies of all time (maybe thats why people forget about this one when listing super hero movies)

This has a few things that most super hero movies have- powers and super villains but again, this has given them a kind of realistic twist that makes it strangely believable.

This is an incredibly modest feature as there are no real 'action' or 'good versus evil' scenes

but that definitely dosnt make this film a bore.

Consistently good and one to have as a benchmark when reviewing all other super hero movies.

Very interesting idea, good performances but ultimately a bit slow.

Bruce Willis provides a strong performance as a man with a secret - that he has hidden from himself and others for the majority of his life. His gruff and blunt performance is ideal for an ordinary man with extraordinary abilities.

This is truly a brilliant film. I have to say that my favourite Shyamalan film is Signs but this comes a close second. Yes it is somewhat subtle and slow without over the top fights and explosions which is why some people don't like it, but it is this very fact that makes it so special. I have always loved Bruce WIllis in a more subtle role than Die Hard. The 5th element and 12 monkeys are also great films and he continues that laid back grumpy kind of way that makes him so good in these roles. Everyone should watch it and if you like it I also recommend checking out those other three films mentioned as well as True Romance and V for Vendetta.

This film is not in the same league as The Sixth Sense, which I thought was outstanding . The twist is expected and not that earth shattering and Bruce Willis acts out the characted identically to his character in TSS. Overall hugely dissapointing given the rave reviews it has received above. I am glad I only paid a pound for it, because it was, in my opinion, a resaonable watch but certainly not worth buying.

To get this film you must have imagination in your heart, the ending is fantastic with Samuel L Jacksons final haunting words!! Understated, finely acted and beautifully crafted a film you can watch again and again and appreciate the poignant themes of life it subtly illustrates!!!

This is a really great film with an interesting plot, especially towards the end, it's quite unpredictable. Overall brilliantly done, but not nessesarily everybody's favourite. Personally though I thought it was fantastic

I too rented this based on the reviews here, all but one being full of praise. I was so disappointed. When the end came I just thought 'so that was it?' There is an almost total absence of plot and it feels like it's written by an amateur. Desperately lacking in get up and go, it just made me want to get up and go. I echo the sentiment above; two hours of my life thrown away. It's one of worst films I've seen in a long time. Hard to believe Willis also plays action men. Was he ill at the time?

Just finished watching this film for the first time and I have to say that it was better than the 6th sense. The twist at the end makes this one of the most original superhero films ever. Definately worth renting.

I rented this from iTunes based on the strong reviews even though I thought it looked potentially naff. Well what a pleasant surprise! A really interesting and unusual angle on the superhero theme with a great performance by Bruce Willis. Leaves you wanting more; I would love to see a sequel or even a spin off TV series, lots of potential!

I'm pretty sure this film had poor reviews for years after it first came out...I have loved it forever though so its nice to see it getting some recognition! Just please let us buy it!

The film seems as if it is going to be promising when it starts off, and with both Bruce Willes and Samuel Jackson playing main parts you would expect it to be. But dont be mistaken, this is one of the worst films I have ever seen. It is too drawn out, and doesnt really have a substantial storyline. The film tries to make a rational explanation of how the hero gets his superpowers, which apart from making the film dull, does not work. This film waste almost 2 hours of my life.....

I just finished watching the film. I felt compelled to come here and say this. This film is phenomenal. It achieves on so many levels - though I shall not elaborate on them as that has potential to take away any surprises this film has for you. It surprised me. You owe it to yourself to watch this film.
