Description

The misadventures begin when Miles (Paul Giamatti), an un-recovered divorcé and would-be novelist with a wine fixation, decides to gift old college buddy and washed-up actor Jack (Thomas Haden Church) with a celebratory trip to the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley the week before Jack's wedding. The two couldn't be an odder couple. Jack is an over-sexed charmer; Miles is a sad-sack worrier. Jack is looking for his "last taste of freedom"; Miles just wants to taste perfection in a bottle. Jack is fine with cheap Merlot; Miles pines for the elusive, perfect Pinot. Indeed, the only thing they seem to share in common is the same heady mix of failed ambitions and fading youth. And yet, as they make their way up the coast, Miles and Jack soon find themselves drowning in wine and women. Both men careen dangerously and comically toward mid-life crises. Now, the wedding approaches and with it the certainty that Miles and Jack won't make it back to Los Angeles unscathed or unchanged...if they get back there at all.

A brilliant movie unless you're humourless or a teenager (or both). Giamatti gets most of the credit but what makes his performance shine so much is the pitch perfect performance of his 'foil', Haden Church. Direction is spot on as well. It is in short a near-perfect film.

Just a great film to enjoy

Watched this film on tv some time ago and loved it. We recorded it so watched it again then I spotted it going cheap in the supermarket so bought it.. We like films which go at a slow pace like this, without the murder and mayhem, so this fits the bill. Enjoy it.

REALLY QUITE BRILLIANT

Without doubt one of the finest American films of the last 10 years. Beautifully written and directed and the cast is perfect. It gets better every time I see it.
Winner of Best Film at the Golden Globes and an Oscar Winner for Best Adapted Screenplay, this film is a masterpiece. Buy it NOW!!!!!!

It was one of the worst films I have ever seen. Boring. No humour and to think I lost 2 hours of my life watching it always thinking it must get better. But alas it wasn't meant to be.

Rather disappointing

This was highly reviewed and not violent . I was pretty disappointed, though
There are some funny moments but the film is not witty - it is basically a sitcom. But most of all the characters are not sympathetic, or indeed even nice. You have to find their incompetence funny and not be put off by their (mostly unsuccessful) efforts to reach a mental age of 12 to stay with it. And they are, for no obvious reason, childishly cruel to one of their mothers and to other major characters. I believe US men are mostly nicer than this - even the unsuccessful ones!
And as a non-US point the characters perennially drive drunk - this will not work in most places.

Mr Giametti's character takes an awfully long time to 'wake up and smell the Pinot' and just as you're running out of patience with him, this witty comedy of manners descends into farce. It's so well-written, you can almost taste the sour grapes but I wish I cared more.

Truly brilliant!

My favourite film, I hate all the big budget explosion filled nonsense that floods our screens these days, Sideways is a fantastic film for adults which follows two middle aged men going on a journey in search of Wine, Women and more importantly them selves, the drama that ensues is pure genius, hilarious but in a very intelligent and adult way. In short it is a wonderful film and a breath of fresh air in the world of big budget cinema that we sadly live in today. 10 out of 10!!!

I'm going to be one of the few to actually stick up for Apple here, and say that it's £2.49 rental charge is good value. Ok, sure, at the moment you can actually buy this film from a well known online store for £2.99. But, I for one am getting really fed up with several hundred dvd's taking up so much room in my cupboard that I watch once or twice and then leave to gather dust, till several months later. At least with iTunes rentals, you get the film more or less instantly, and it takes up no extra room in your house. Plus, if you want to watch it again in the rental period you can.
On to the film, yes, it is great. Not laugh-out-loud hilarious, but funny in places. It is also a good drama, with some great, realistic characters. I love road movies, and this is definitely one of the better ones.

Top film

This film is a brillant road trip comedy and one of my all time favourites, but... you can buy this on DVD for £2.99 from a big online DVD reseller named after a button you press on your DVD player, so do yourself a favour and get it from there instead!
