Description

The names ricochet through Western lore. Jesse James (Brad Pitt) was the most notorious outlaw of his time, wanted by the law in 10 states yet celebrated as a Robin Hood in newspapers and dime novels. Teenaged Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) idolized Jesse, sought his friendship, rode with him. It wasn’t enough. The up-and-comer wanted his shot at fame. And when he got it, he took it. Pitt gives a volcanic, charismatic performance as Jesse in this saga of celebrity and obsession adapted from Ron Hansen’s historical novel by director Andrew Dominik (Chopper). “They’re all lies,” Jesse says of the stories surrounding him. A deeper, more human truth awaits in this ambitious and stirring epic film.

Well made but hard work.

The acting is fantastic, particularly from Casey Affleck (Robert Ford) and scenes such as the train robbing scene are beautifully and artistically made. But as far as entertainment goes, it's a lot of hard work, particularly during the first 3/4 of the film, after that, it moves at a more captivating pace.

Brilliant and absorbing

What a great movie. I've not a bad thing to say about it. The West as it really was, brilliant acting by entire cast and the narration of a true story (with Hollywood in the mix). Just don't expect it to be a spaghetti western - it's more authentic than that.

brad pitts the man.

Really really really dull, by the end of the first hour you just can't wait for Jesse to die so you can finish the film.

Dragged out too long!

How can this film review such wonderful reviews? Whilst I agree that the cinematography is excellent and there is some just wonderful imagery......2 hours and 40 minutes just makes it drag on somewhat. At times I lost track of who was who, and being that I knew that Bob was going to shoot Jesse...I just wanted him to get on with it in the end! I must question the reviews saying Casey Affleck's performance was outstanding....I just got a tad fed up of his scratchy voice and him looking like he was going to cry.
Yes, the scenery and imagery was beautiful but not a film I would recommend.

The story line is so sad and the cast play their roles so very well. Only one thing left to say:

Brad Pitt has never been better in a film. The music is fantastic and the story is so sad! The photography should've got an oscar, I did feel rather depressed but until the end it is an amazing film!!!!! and a great price.
Get it on Blu-ray!

I like to consider myself a movie-buff of all genres, so at least try to trust my judgement here. It was not until my third viewing of this a couple of weeks ago that I realised just how stunning this film is. The acting, especially from the three main characters (Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell) is absolutely exceptional. Every quiver, sense of desperation, sadness, fear, longing and desire is picked up by the actors, and to be honest I can't really tell you just how great it is. Bear in mind this is not your classic 'western', it is simply set during that time period, so don't expect a fast paced, shoot em' up story-line. It is focused on the downfall of these characters, using themes such as betrayal and greed throughout. The soundtrack is possibly the best I have ever heard, and again, you will need to hear it yourself to understand it's greatness. Basically, the point of this review is to try and get across the perfection I saw in this film. However, this will certainly not appeal to everyone, as it is the opposite of the mainstream movies of today such as Transformers etc. I only recommend this to those who look for more in film than gun fights and explosions, those who appreciate the art of film-making at it's very best, those whom are not looking for a feel-good film, and especially those who like to see a story unrushed.

O.K

Having heard so much about this film, and being a fan of westerns in general, I was expecting to be entertained. Unfortunately, this is a terribly dull, slow film which seems to drag on endlessly without really going anywhere. Technically, it is fine (although the dialog often seems mumbled), but it is very tedious to sit through. I kept watching, in the hope that it would pick up eventually, but it just doesn't and I gave up watching about 2/3 the way through as I just couldn't take any more. The acting, scenery, shooting etc. may be wonderful but the overall film itself had me wondering what the fuss was all about, other than to create something "worthy" in order to grab Oscars. Dreary, slow and frustrating.

This film is one of the few epics that can stand beside films such as ben hur and once upon a time in the west and boast about how good it is.
It captivates it's audience and makes them morn for it's characters. It makes you think about life in a different way, sometimes leaving you with a sense of liberality, even when you know that some deserve to be punished.
The music aids this perfectly, and completes the atmosphere which the film creates.
One of the greatest films of our time, it is definately a must see before you die.

this film is one of the only classic westerns that has come out in the past few decades, brings the genre into this century with stunning cinematography, a beautifully poetic script and a fantastic cast. definitley on a par with no country for old men. i just think this film is an absolute triumph.

I feel so sorry for the reviewer who could only endure 40 minutes of this truly wonderful film. Perhaps it is a sad reflection of a proportion of our cinema going public that films of this stature are deemed boring. The term 'Masterpiece' can often be overused but I think it wholly appropriate on this occasion. This movie could be watched simply for Roger Deakins' vision alone. Don't be put off by the channel hopping generation - this is a magnificent experience.

This movie felt more like a documentary. It had no story and no dramatic drive. It was a series of small stories, strung together, working up to the death of Jesse James. Most westerns such as the brilliant Christian Bale/Russell Crowe recent outing- 3.10 to Yuma, concentrate on giving the audience what it wants; a right good story, action, with some decent characterisation.
Here we're left to fend for ourselves, this movie was more concerned with giving it's big star a meaty part to play, and whilst Pitt is desperate to prove himself as a viable, younger Clooney (his chum) he can't- we the viewer are asked too much of. We're led to believe that JJ gets away with what he does through his sheer charisma & charm. You'll struggle with that element here.
There's references to this being a classic, I'm not quite sure what is meant- sure it's shot and conceived & slow and pondering enough to give you that feel- that this wants to be one of those classics. Perhaps it's a classic documentary?
The sign of a bad 'movie' is where you switch off a third of the way through in order to watch Die Hard 4.0 for some much needed light relief, before finishing JJ off. Classic Westerns are not the stuff of this. (The film is pardoned slightly by the actor playing Charlie Ford, he's good, but it certainly is not enough. A western with no proper shoot-outs!

JESSE JAMES IS TRULY AN EXTRAORDINARY CHARACTER PLAYED SPECTACULARLY BY BRAD PITT, HOWEVER HIS ACTING IS NEARLY MATCHED BY SUPER NEWCOMER CASEY AFFLECK, WHO PLAY ROBERT FORD JESSE JAMES' KILLER. THIS FILM IS THE BEST I HAVE EVER WATCHED BUT BUY IT ON DVD RATHER THAN WATCHING IT ON THE LITTLE IPOD SCREEN.YOU NEED A BIG SCREEN TO BE FULLY IMMERSED IN THIS MASTERPIECE.....

Remarkable!

Great story with some excellent peices of acting. However, unfortunately, Mr. Pitt forgot to act out his 'granulated eye lids' that were mentioned just as he was shown staring into the distance... ooops.

Please can I pay double the price I pay in the US to see this because I love being ripped off

I guess this was alright, it just dragged on a bit. Great acting and the action was not bad but ut was heavily interlaced with slow scenes, too often for my liking, but overall a good film. Worth a watch.

Just rented this movie. i have read lot of reviews about this movie. most of them saying its rubbish and some saying its amazing. personally i agreed with both. It didnt need to be over 2 hours long, the past was dragging at times, it was very details but detailed to jesse's life we will never no. Brad and the cast r great it was shot well, and felt the music of the film could have been more. and personal if there did a remake of this movie i'm sure another screen writer could have done a better job. But over all a good film, im so glad rented and didnt buy.

Haven't felt so bored and irritated by a film for many years.
Struggled to endure 30-40 minutes after which I turned it off.
Little to hold my interest and an extrememly annoying, intrusive and patronising narrator who tended to state the obvious all the time. You couldn't help feeling a few extra lines of dialogue would have been far more enjoyable.
There's also a repetitive visual effect with a vignetted/blurred periphery which just looks extremely naff and was probably computer generated.
This is obviously a love it or hate it film, but while I can often waste time doing trivial things I wasn't prepared to waste another 2 hours of my life to see it through.
On the plus side the HD rental via AppleTV was of reasonably high quality.

As good as No Country / There Will Be Blood Etc

I dont get what other reviewers are saying, this is a wonderful film - a masterpiece as someone else stated.
also i thought the pacing was brilliant and leant well to the existential nature of its plot
This is a must watch film, as good as No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood, i will definitely be buying the DVD and a biography of Jesse and the James gang!
Buy this movie, rent on here or on DVD you have to see it

This film is a true modern masterpiece. The first thing you will notice in it is the stunning scenery; we've seen some good locations in westerns, yes, but nothing on the same level is this! The next thing you will notice is the perfect casting and acting. Much has been said about Casey Affleck's marvellous performance (and deservedly so) but Brad Pitt also excels in bringing a complex and believable Jesse James to life. Thankfully it doesn't end there, strong supporting roles create a memorable set of characters. The ending is powerful and perfectly paced - for once you won't be disappointed by a bodged "hollywood" finale'. Oh, and don't forget the awesome music and a great script. The film clocks in at 2 hours 40 minutes, not the shortest of films, but there is so much to appreciate here that you won't mind a bit.
