Description

The tension and terror that is present-day South Africa is powerfully portrayed in director Richard Attenborough's sweeping story of black activist Stephen Biko (Denzel Washington) and a liberal white newspaper editor who risks his own life to bring Biko's message to the world. After learning of apartheid's true horrors through Biko's eyes, editor Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) discovers that his friend has been silenced by the police. Determined not to let Biko's message go unheard, Woods undertakes a perilous quest to escape South Africa and bring Biko's remarkable tale of courage to the world. The riveting, true story offers a stirring account of man at his most evil and most heroic.

Stunning

This film will hit you hard. Next time you think something's not fair, just imagine what is was like in South Africa and what Biko had to endure. What an incredible man, an incredible story. Everyone should watch this.

Soundtrack needed please

Brilliant Film, inspiring. Yes, please, soundtrack please. I knew someone who had it on CD but they were limited availability. We need the soundtrack on itunes, my favourite tunes of course are the end titles and Shebeen Queen, the score was done by George Fenton and Jonas Gwangwa. Jonas has a CD, A Temporary Inconvenience (really good too) with a version of Shebeen Queen on it but not as catchy as the film version.

Originally released in 1987 in UK

I saw this many years ago (Early 1990's) and it blew me away. Just thinking about its contents and knowing what has happened in that country brings me to tears. Educational and heartbreakingly factual - a must see for understanding a part of history. glad to see it on here.

Cry Freedom - Everyone should watch it.

There are some films that should be required watching, purely because they show the world as it is, not sugar coated or glossed over, but in all its gritty, unpleasant, uplifting, tragic and ultimately hopeful glory. Cry Freedom for me is one such film. I'd heard Peter Gabriel sing about Biko, but had never really truly understood what was happening in South Africa, what the word 'apartheid' really meant, until I watched this film. Its a true story, and I can honestly say that I was moved and changed in the way that I looked at life after seeing it. Both Denzil Washington and Kevin Kline should be very proud of their performances.
