There are some films that should be required watching, purely because they show the world as it is, not sugar coated or glossed over, but in all its gritty, unpleasant, uplifting, tragic and ultimately hopeful glory. Cry Freedom for me is one such film. I'd heard Peter Gabriel sing about Biko, but had never really truly understood what was happening in South Africa, what the word 'apartheid' really meant, until I watched this film. Its a true story, and I can honestly say that I was moved and changed in the way that I looked at life after seeing it. Both Denzil Washington and Kevin Kline should be very proud of their performances.
