October, 1957. Nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes (Eli Marienthal) lives in Rockwell, Maine, a seemingly idyllic town. Hearing stories of a UFO that crashed into the sea, Hogarth, always on the lookout for mutant aliens, finds a huge, metal-eating robot (Vin Diesel) with an insatiable curiosity and equally insatiable appetite. But the extraterrestrial's presence unleashes a wave of Cold War paranoia that threatens to engulf Rockwell unless Hogarth and his 50-foot friend can stop it. Acclaimed animation director and writer Brad Bird brings his creative talents to the big screen in this unique tale of two heroes. This movie is breathtaking. The animation is superb and original. The characters all are fleshed out and all of them have their funny bits. The villain (Kent mansley) is just freaking fantastic and is given a damn right hilarious voice by Christopher McDonald.

Definitely one of the best animated movies of all time

Though iTunes doesn’t offer the Blu-ray’s extras, this is the widescreen restored edition of the special edition release. I put off for ages buying this because incorrect comments on these reviews saying it was a SD transfer. It’s the best this film has looked

The movie itself is a classic. However, this so-called 1080p HD version on iTunes is nothing more than upscaled SD. You can tell this right from the beginning, since the animation — in particular the tell-tale opening graphics — has the characteristic ‘jagged’ edges you associate with not enough pixels being rendered. If it were in the correct HD format, I’d award it five stars.

Pickle_m I watched this movie when I was 4 and I was not scared so kids and parents will love this film. However a second point is how awesome this movie is. It has laugh out loud comedy; striking imagery and is fun from start to finish. What would you expect from the director of "The Incredibles" . However it was only recently when I saw this again I cried my eyes out at the end. It's so moving and heartfelt making this film what it is. I believe this could be the best non-disney hand drawn animation of all time or simply the best.

My 7-year old daughter told me that teachers at school allowed her class to watch the Iron Giant over the course of several days in small chunks before term break and so I was convinced it was an age appropriate film. The "U" rating seem to suggest the same.

However I have to say that my wife and I were very disappointed to discover that the Iron Giant is a little bit too violent for our liking. Don't get me wrong: our 7-year old daughter liked watching the film for the second time, but that doesn't make it necessarily a good film. Our 4-year old was certainly scared.

I would usually rate the film with 2 stars, but give it a third one for the great animations. In my view the film should come with a "U+" rating. In addition, I think there are better animated films available than the Iron Giant.

A very underrated movie; with a strong cast & stylish animation (courtesy of Warner Brothers's rich cartoon heritage). Set in "paranoias-ville" 1950s America, it's one for the over 4's all the way up to 104!... A 'sci-fi' film definitely worth watching with all the family & will eventually touch even the hardest of hearts...

I Havent seen this in TIME!! Love The Story :) It Takes A Hour Download Though And I Want to Go Bed :)! Well Yeah Its A good Film So Yeah Buy it Because I Havent Seen It In the Shops .. Never i Think :) £7 Bit pricey but i suppose.. its ok :)

About 2 years ago i went to the recycling bins behind tesco and i saw a box full of dvd's- most were very old and didnt appeal- but i saw this and decided id have a look- i could always take it back... It is still in my dvd collection.

love the drama between the detective and hogarth. great easy watch- even better when its free though!!! :P

This has to be one of the best animated films i and my two young kids have seen in a very long time, it centres around a young boy (hogarth) who discovers a giant robot(vin diesel) munching on electricity pilons who in turn gets (obviously)electocuted, and hogarth ends up saving the robots life, from then on the robot follows young hogarth all over the place, which leads to the young chap trying to hide the iron giant in his barn!!!, this is an absolute corker of a film whether you have kids or not you WILL not be dissapointed, BRILLIANT
