American Pie came out at the cinema when I was but a schoolboy, I was about 2 years younger than James (the hero) Paul (the intellectual anti-nerd) Chris (the ladies man) Kevin (who?) and Steven (he doesn't care as long as you don't call him Steven), the main characters of the film. So being of a similar age I had trouble getting into the cinema to actually watch it. In fact, I couldn't. It wasn't until about 2002 when I first saw it. When I did eventually see it, the first thing that struck me is that all of the main characters were literally copies of my childhood school friends. Everyone knows a Stiffler and Finch and pretty much all of what happened in the movie happened to me and my friends. I kid you not. Even down to the well intentioned father who buys his son a "risqué" magazine, but managed to cause massive embarrassment and the infamous web cam incident (sources tell me this scene links to American Reunion, the new film)
The thing is, this movie is funny. The performances by Sean William Scott, Jason Biggs and Jim's Dad (yes, he is so epic this will be on his tombstone when he dies) are stuff made of legends. I am glad I waited those extra years to see this movie otherwise I don't think I would have appreciated it as much as I do now. If you happen to be 25 or 26 year old male or a 17 year old who has just left school. This was made for you.
Watch this then American Pie 2 then American Wedding skip everything else in the series and then go to see American Reunion this March!.
