Description

After a long period in a mental institution - the result of a traumatic childhood - he returns to the streets of the East End of London where he grew up. The sights, sounds and the smells of those streets begin to awaken the deeply buried memories of his childhood. At the centre of these memories is the great trauma of losing his mother, a trauma which occurred, he believes, because his plumber father, Bill Cleg, murdered her in order to move a prostitute into the house in her place. As Spider claws through the falsehoods he has woven around himself, he begins to arrive at the truth about his life and about his mother's death. The truth, which will take him to the very limits of his faltering sanity.

spider...

This film was a superb portrayal of mental illness, Ralph Fiennes played his part brilliantly and the cinematography gave the film a real feeling of confusion and paranoia. Well worth a watch but don't expect thrills all the way, it is a quiet shambling affair that nonetheless has you glued to your seat. I agree with the other comment about when she pays the plumber. gross.

Mike

Although not as spectacular as many films, even many of Cronembergs own, Spider is an engaging insight into the human mind. Some people, used to big bangs, car crashes, "laugh a minute" comedies, love stories and brutal visceration may find Spider dull or unintresting. The repetition and seeming mundanity of the piece in the first act are however setting the stage, in a sense one can view the progression of the film as a painting, with a backdrop being set and as the film continues, further textures are added, followed by finer details, eventually presenting a portrait of the personal horror of a paranoid schitzophrenic.
The cast are suberb in their roles, no nods to camera, loss of character or breaks of the 4th wall, needless to say I think this is a fantastic film.
