Description

Michael Cimino's controversial epic of corrupted idealism, set during the bloody Johnson County Wars of the 1890s, was detested by a majority of film critics upon its release and is now the subject of the "re-revisionism" that affects the reputation of many films and works of art. Some critics now regard "Heaven's Gate" (the film that almost brought down an American film studio) as a masterpiece...a film ahead of its time. The enormous cast includes Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, Sam Waterston, Isabelle Huppert, John Hurt, Brad Dourif, Joseph Cotten, Jeff Bridges, Geoffrey Lewis, Richard Masur, Terry O'Quinn, Mickey Rourke and Willem Dafoe. The extraordinary cinematography is by Vilmos Zsigmond.

The Movie That Killed Hollywood

I watched this out of curiosity – how could so much talent be part of such a disaster? Well, 4 hours later I got my answer.
There's about 6 pages of silted dialogue in the whole film; far too many musical interludes; and the heavy hand of Cimino crushes every opportunity for elegy or landscape beauty.
Hollywood would never trust a director again, and so here we are now, with unrelenting ordure and endless sequels. Thanks Mike!
Recommendation: best missed.

Just about unwatchable. Turgid, laboured and incoherent - hardly surprising this movie almost broke a studio.

An excellent film, well worth the hype and reputation. I seen this film when it first came out and have tried to buy a copy ever since. I will rent and watch again and again.. Enjoy
