This movie is totally different to normal Star Trek people have grown up with. It’s watchable if you but they ignore canon and decide to change the timelines and way to much lens flare

This is a superficially great movie-beautifully shot, great cast, well acted, decent script, and is well paced. But there is something safe and antiseptic about it. It seems to be made by a master movie-maker, a master craftsman, but not a master story-teller or an artist. It lacks great scenes, great quotes, great moments, and though it grazes these at times, one suspects it does through exhuming the greatness of a previous auteurs vision, through mining the sparkling dynamic between Kirk, Spock and their gang. Ironically it lauds Kirks risk-taking maverick qualities, whilst sorely lacking these itself, a movie seemingly made by numbers. It’s an imitation of a great movie, and though a great imitation, not great in itself, only superficially so, ultimately leaving no lasting residue in your soul. Still worth a watch though.

JJ Abrams totally rocked this reboot. Great action, humour and acting. Highly commended for anyone, even if you aren't a Trekkie. Nice work!!!

I wasn't really a star trek fan I mean I did watch the show sometimes. This film was brillant it had a great cast and a great story to it. For everyone who didn't watch star trek give this film a chance I did and I fairly enjoyed it.

One of the best movies I have ever seen... Period!

I have to disagree with some of the reviews here, in the sense that this film does not depart from the original genera. If anything it's a modern interpretation of the original Star Trek with a new,but familiar captain, and new first officer and crew on the Bridge of the Enterprise. Fast paced action with plenty of special effects, the film does well to enlighten us of the original characters, and stays with the original Star Trek in every detail in terms of the cast characters. The cast do more than hold their own, and fans of the genera will not be disappointed. The script has the feel of a modern comedy action adventure, while the plot is a bit thin to say the least, but this is Star Trek and story-lines with great substance have never been the priority. It is nonetheless a great piece of entertainment and takes the audience to where they have been before thank god - to relive and reinvent a timeless classic. It succeeds on many levels and surpassed, by a proverbial mile, my limited and cautious expectations.

When will iTunes get the message... You can buy the film for £5 on bluray, and I hear you say "but I want to watch it on my iPad ect" well there is a program to covert it save your money get the bluray..

Im a big fan of the first made for TV series and have seen many an episode from that era. The blendng of the story line I thought would have been cheap and cheesy but it actually works. The trailer hardly does it justice and its a film to linger long in your memory after seeing it. The humour is excellent and had me chuckling. Credit to the young actor playing Bones or director for doing their homework. He had all his one-liners to perfection. Can't wait to watch the sequel.

Absolutely brilliant , I say with the upmost security. You will not miss a film like this without regretting it for your whole life. It deserves its five star rating, more than any other film. I may be young but I have watched all the "older" Star Trek films and they are brilliant , this cannot be classed as a remake of the "old" one but more of an addition to the "older" ones . I think the plot and write up of this new Star Trek is amazing and the addition of great Hollywood FX and outstanding scenery is a bonus that makes the whole film seem real and flawless. All in all an amazing film , but I do have one thing to say…. Wherever they can put it , and seriously , WHEREVER THEY CAN PUT IT , they will add flipping LENS FLARES….. In every scene theres a big glimpse of light across the whole scene and even when theres little light theres lens flares. But one of my favourite films to date , up there with Monty Python, Top secret, Star Trek into darkness, The lord of the rings trilogy . Seriously Watch it , and I can't believe you read my review , Well Done!

Dipped in and out of a few old Star Trek films....felt like I was cheating on my Princess Leah though.

I watched this film because I'd ran out of films to watch on a long haul flight.

I've told anyone who hasn't watched the first film to watch it, so u can appreciate a sure to be cracking second film.

For all fans of Star Trek they should like this a lot and for all those who never liked or got into it, you should love this film, truly great film with plenty of action, wits, emotions and great acting. Plot is great and you'll want to re watch.

The original Star Trek was comprised of deep, moral questioning and philosophising; this movie contains lots of explosions, people shooting at each other and an incoherent plot.

If you like intelligent, erudite sci-fi to that makes you think, then this isn't for you; if you like movies where people blow stuff up, you'll love it

This feature is more palatable to a wider audience due to the simpler plot and the phenomenal action sequences. You will enjoy this.

This is by far the best Star Trek film I have seen. Great actors, great story line and funny in parts. Can't wait for into darkness to come out now. Absolute must watch.

The definition of a PERFECT sci fi film

A plot that could have been written by a 5 year old, terrible direction and a lack of an understanding of what makes Star Trek Star Trek. This film is aimed at those that just want to see explosions in space.

Loved, loved, loved this. Reboots the whole ST concept with real style. Chris Pine gives us a Kirk just the perfect side of send up. Zachary Quinto is startling - especially standing next to the original Spock. Karl Urban is almost better than DeForest Kelly. And Chris Hemsworth will break your heart in less than 10 minutes screen time. Best of all it's an effects laden SciFi epic that actually understands structure and pacing. If you missed it, catch it now.

Lens flair. There's a lot of it but it all adds to the first class special effects. The story is all right and the cast does a decent job of carrying it along. A great summer blockbuster.

Cannot fault this film for delivering non-stop action and engagement. Brilliant casting and dialogue. Have seen it twice and enjoyed it even more.

WATCH IT!!!!!!

This is the only star trek film I've ever seen, I've never even seen the TV show. I watched because of the amazing reviews and I wasn't disappointed! This was amazing!

I have never got I into star trek but this is very different, the episodes of star trek always seem to be slow but this was so different , you should really watch this!

ABSOLOUTLY AMAZING!!! Never been interested in star trek before but this was a film with an incredible array of SFX and great acting aswell as an intriguing plot line. Not to be missed at any cost. A MUST SEE.

I have not seen all the star trek films but it doesn't matter if this film is not "exactly" like the originals and it doesn't have to be. It's a good film and a film to relax whilst watching. So what it has little differences from the original. WAKE UP and smell the warp drive !!!! it's the 21st century ! It's great

This. Film. Is. EMENCI !!! it is all about the orignal Startrek series, but minus the cheesy effects (no offence to anybody who happens to like the particular effects in the orginal series) but seriously, this film is full of action from start to finish, and i gaurente you will not find a boring moment in it. also you immedtiatley know this film is about star Trek, and if you do decide to watch it, you'll know what i'm on about! however, at first you may find it lsightly complicated, as the timeline does jump around abit. But overall this film is fantastic! :D

The effects are good but that is to be expected from any Hollywood release nowadays... Plot is awful, full of factual errors, physical impossibilities, character flaws and the ship sets for the re-imagined ship looks, feels and sounds like a toy... As far as I'm concerned I should be compensated for the time that I wasted watching this travesty of a trek movie. Utter waste...

Having been an off/on Star Trek fan over the years, I was keen to see what the new instalment of Star Trek would bring to the new masses. We were not disappointed. From a sentimental perspective, there are all the main characters from the original Star Trek series/films with the added bonus of an intimate insight into how they meet and become the characters we all know and love.

Cannot wait for the second installment of this action packed, heart warming, spine tingling journey.

The great thing about this movie is that it's a really good starting place for people who have never been in to Trek before, another great thing about this movie is that it's also great for long time Treckers who have been watching since they were kids. This movie has lots of little nods to the die hard fans but not at the expence of the plot or to the extent that the film is confusing if you don't get them... in fact you may not even notice them if you're not familiar with the series. If you're a Star Trek fan that for what ever reason hasn't seen this movie before then I'm telling you to buy it (you can thank me later) because you'll love it. If you're not really in to Trek but you enjoy Action/Adventure with a bit of Comedy then again you will love this movie and at the very least it's worth a rent if not a buy.

My new faverouite film!!! Packed full of awesome, spine tingling graphics, an intelligent yet perfectly executed plot and a fantastic re-vitalisong of the franchise, it is a must buy.

The best movie I've ever seen.

Worth every penny!

It is a film of epic proportions, but i couldnt help but notice that some seems are a bit quick with the camera, and the storyline was slightly on the thin side. But in terms of the red matter subject, Ive seen angels and demons. I when i hear anything "matter" i instantly think either a big explosion is going to happen, or that is the climax. great acting and equally great CGI very well made film which I think helps bring an aging TV series and string of movies to the new generation. this is like no other star trek film because its not supposed to be, its supposed to inspire. I think it worked!

This is an awesome film that will certainly become one to watch for a good few years. The computer graphics are amazing, the acting is brilliant, the storyline inspired and this put to Michael Giacchino's soundtrack makes for an almost unmatched cinematographic experience.

Others have said that the plot to this movie is confusing and senseless but I disagree. I am not a big watcher of films so I cannot comment widely but this had one of the better flows between action and plot. It does flail widely and thus fall into the ever present action-movie trap of being predictable in what will happen next; the deployment of Kirk in a torpedo and subsequent finding of monsters leading to Spock and Scotty is an example. Putting this aside, the story made, to me, perfect sense assuming you pay a decent amount of attention and don't keep crunching on popcorn or slurping drinks as film watchers are liable to do.

The thing that this movie will be mostly praised for are the special effects. These are virtually second to none. Perfection in both standard definition and high definition which is an otherworldly experience (excuse the pun.)

I went to the film thinking I wasn't going to understand any of it because I had never seen a Star Trek episode in my life, but I was wrong.

You do not need to have watched any episodes previously to understand this film.

It has a great story line and is action packed from the very beginning to the very end, £10.99 and it is well worth it, have already watched twice in the 2 days that I have had it, and am watching it again tonight.

Definitely my favourite film of 2009.. and in a completely different league to the Star Trek movies that came before. The end of the film left me wanting to see more!

This film is fantastic, a real must see.

If you've ever sat down after a film and thought 'I wonder what the Hungarian trailer for this is like?' then iTunes Extras are for you; the "Extras" include nine trailers (for the film you've just watched!) in multiple languages, taking 700MB of hard-drive space. You get two videos and some pictures but there's precious little else; the photos and drawings don't even have titles telling you what they are of. Plus there's adverts for other merchandise you can buy which ruins the experience.

The film was quite good; average story but truly excellent visuals. Entertaining.

i truely loved this film it was utterly fantastic!! when i saw the trailer i thought 'oh god star trek, i havent watched the TV series so i wont understand the film so whats the point of seeing it'

but it is not like that at all the brilliant thing is that it doesnt matter if you have watched the series or not you WILL understand this film it may get confusing at times but that is because of the fantastic storyline!! and it all becomes clear at the end anyway so it doesnt matter!! i am so pleased that i bought this film i could watch it again & again.

I am 48 years old. I grew up on original Star Trek and this film for me flooded me with excitement and emotion. The re worked original music at the end had me in floods of tears! No ST film has until now come close to how it should have been. This was a triumph of reinvention - masterful hommage to the original series and paced to entertain. The cast were selected with outstanding care - McCoy was an inspired choice. It had drama action comedy and I loved it so much I have made it film of 2009. And I saw 137 films last year. Wonderful. If you are not in my age group you cannot understand why this film meant so much. Then it was all we had in believable sci-fi. This film brought back and added to a legend.

The best thing about this film is the reverse-nostalgia generated by seeing the famous characters of the original Star-Trek before they were famous (so to speak). Spock, Bones, even Scotty are all present, and played well. Sadly the Kirk character didn't Speak. In. One. Word. Sentences. But you can't have everything. And best of all, Leonard Nimoy!

However, the plot was awful. More narrative and psychological flaws than a piece of n-dimensional swiss cheese. Utter nonsense for the most part; oh, entertaining enough, with lots of stuff blowing up, but (as Spock would say) deeply illogical.

Before seeing this film, I had not seen any previous Star Trek's, but herd about them from my father. Aster watching the movie, I made my father buy me TOS. I got chills down my spine at various points in this film, and loved that they used the original Spock in part of it. I also loved Bones' character, i loved his form of humor. Kirk however slightly disapointed me, don't get me wrong, I loved him too, but nothing can really live up to William Shatners portrayal. Still one of my top five films of the year though :) ♥

I came to the cinema with low expectation about this film but by the end I was blown away. The cast was brilliant and some of the one liners were terrific. Simon pegg was great.

This is not a rubish movie if you have not got this then GET IT NOW I love it it's amazing best ever

When I went to see this film I wasn't sure what to expect, whether it was going to be like the original or whether it was going to be a brand new story and set of charactors. To be honest with you it was a bit of both. You feel like you are really there, it's serious and funny at the same time with the perfect amount of both. It's a really good film and I recommend it.

Yawn! So Captain James T Kirk was a rebel in his youth. I use 'rebel' as a byword for stereotypical American idea of a rebel; to any person with more than a dozen or so brain cells this translates as two dimensional tedious jerk. All this prequel manages to do is remove any depth or allure from the six chief protagonists character that has been developed over many years. One for the under 13s!

Great sense of humour missing from ST since William Shatner et al, visuals up there with Star Wars ( thankfully without thousands of awful CGI 'actors'), great direction as ever from JJ Abrams, new Kirk could be this generations Harrison Ford... BUT - story is riddled with plot holes and conveniences...

***SPOILERS***

...Kirk is dumped on a barren planet, coincidentally next to a cave where the old Mr Spock lives, who then explains the plot to him, but are they marooned forever? No because over the next hill is a base where Scotty lives where coincidentally he's just invented a machine that will transport them back on to the Enterprisezzzzzzz... Meanwhile Spocks mother virtually invites death by standing on the edge of a crumbling cliff and looking sad, one minute Kirk is on trial, then at the end everything is conveniently forgotten and they wheel him in to get a medal! Then there's Kirks constant promotions as people conveniently get out of his way until he's in charge I could go on and on - lazy script writing that treats the audience like idiots. A real shame as this could have been a classic but will suffer from age like Independance Day did. Sorry Trekkies, don't be so easily pleased you deserve more than this!

This is one of the best films of the year by far! It's so good!

There's lots of action and a strong story throughout. The acting is great and it's got plenty of funny bits.

And all round great film reccomended to anyone!

Karl Urban as McCoy is great in this film. He pulls off the grouchy voice of reason admirably, whilst everyone else portrays some extreme of emotion & little else. I really hoped we'd see a lot more of him than we do - he's only on screen for about 5 minutes all told, but the scenes he's in have some life beyond a standard sci-fi actioner.

Spock and Kirk are yin and yang. Kirk with his unquenchable always-right persona, tinged with more than a little arrogance is not helped by his portrayal as a bit of a lech - it would seem that our revisited future will still be chocfull of gender stereotypes that mean females will parade around in mini-skirts & comedy Kirk will fall over himself in a sort of Lesley Philips ding-dong 'helllllloooo' sort of a way. Spock is given Uhura as a love interest which I suppose means that Uhura is by default given something to do ie look at Spock meaningfully and touch his face - and safely lets audiences know that Spock does not bat for the other side despite that haircut. For the life of me I do not know why Uhura is shown on the product cover - she does not do anything in the movie.

The other watchable is Nero - again not on screen for long, and a shame.

The leads if unremarkable are eminently sci-fi bearable. The true star of the show being the CGI and action sequences - the drop from the shuttle to the drill platform was exhilarating and some of the other action sequences are almost as good but this one is the best by a long way. Kirk & Spock on the naughty alien's ship I found a tad done-to-death & reminded me of Jean Luc beaming onto the Borg ship! Not what JJ would want methinks.

Perhaps the poorest thing about this excellent sci-fi is the terrible miscasting Simon Pegg represents. Simon cannot do a Scots accent. The one he manages to smuggle past an American audience is excruciatingly poor. Simon seems to agree with me as at various points later on he's almost all but given up on trying to mangle each word in his version of Scots plumping for just the odd stupid vowel with a splash of 'jings' & 'help m'boab'. I could have done without his added brevity quite happily.

It might point the way to a reinvigorated franchise but I'm not so sure - the material here was all done before just with more or less budget/technology. Much of what I viewed had all been served up in previous ones.

Star Trek has to be contender for film of the year, and like Batman The Dark Night last year, this is movie making at its best. If it is not for the brillaint story of the film and the superb acting by all the cast, then it has to be for the action scenes and the cgi, which are spectacular. This is my first Star Trek film i have seen, so i cannot compare it to the other films, but as a huge film fan, i really liked the film.

The action scenes are perfect, and the CGI is incredible. For example the scenes where three of the star ship enterprise plunge from outer space to the platform of the drilling machine on the Volcan planet, another great scene is the destruction of the planet by the blackhole. There are also plenty of fight scenes and drama, with the death of Kirks father in the opening scenes.

As well as all the action and drama in the film, there is also a spot of comedy, with the likes of Simon Peggs character Scotty, and the pre-fight banter in the bar with Chris Pine's performance of Kirk. The character are brilliantly performed by all cast members, and the stroy is great. After seeing this film, i am going to venture out and watch the previous films.

Definitely a must see film!

This is unlike any other Star Trek film but is superb. The plot is rather bold and I really want to see more of this world. The iTunes Extras are very nice too.

Great film, hence the four stars. Thought it would be rubbish, but it was great from start to finish. I'm not a nutty star trek fan, I am a guy who loves good, gripping films with a story. More than pleasently suprised with the modern day adaptation of a classic. It could of gone so wrong, but it didn't. I highly recommend.

This film is fantastic and is one of the best of '09. Even if you hate star trek, i suggest you give this film its chance. With its great acting, stunning effects and sound plot: this film gives new life to what was a stale and dieing franchise.

I have friends who can't stand Star Trek films or the Serries, but loved this film. And as a Star Trek fan this film blew me away!

Wow!!! Takes the Star Trek franchise to a whole new level

I wasn't sure to see this or not in the cinema, since I wasn't a fan of the old series. Thankfully, the day before, I had seen "Bring Back... Star Trek" which gave ne a few hints on the show. I went to see this film and... OMG. I loved every minute. You don't even have to be a fan of the old series. They've made it so its a new universe in the Star Trek era, where time is changed. Like a before-the-series film. And since time changes in this... this means anything can now happen in the film series.

Truely amazing. The storyline is extremely easy to understand for non fans. I'm a fan now and you can expect me to buy this ;)

Before i go any further, I loved this movie! but a star trek movie it AINT. I know i sound REALLY sad right now but please bear me out!. Dont get me wrong, the SFX are fantastic, the cast are awsome and work well together and its sooo worth watching but it also has some horrendously irritating aspects. For one, you dont get to enjoy the 'new look' sets and the multi million dolar SFX as the bloody camera spins around at break neck speeds all the time and that makes it really hard to follow. Two, the script is so incredibly, criminaly weak... It breaks the cardinal rule of all other star trek movies... it doesnt make ANY SENSE!!. The movie revolves around a previously unheard of substance "red matter"?.. something that we are apparently supposed to know what it is and never gets explained. It also has some REALLY REALLY silly bits. At the start of the movie kirk is a cadet within minutes of getting expelled from a training academy and lo and behold not 12 hours later he's the captain of the flagship of the fleet. This after the title of 'captain' gets handed around between cast members that often that the ships cat coulda had a go if it had had, and been able to, raise its hand and said "hi, how about me?"... It just ruins any credibility or any sense of realism that you might get in that starfleet is supposed to be a military 'esq' style service. Basically, its childish!. Next, Kirk starts to irritate Spock so Spock shoots him out of a torpeado tube onto an Ice planet full of lethal creatures where he just happens to find Spock and then Scotty in an ice cave?... I mean.. REALLY?!!!!. Its funny as hell,sure but does that sound a little 'wrong' to anybody?..

For the more 'Trekkie' devout among us as a result of this movie the timeline gets changed and basically every other thing you may have ever seen of star trek NO LONGER HAPPENS.

Dont get me wrong though, despite my ranting, it is a really good movie. Theres some hillarious interactions between the cast and the action sequences (if you can keep up with the camera) are the best you'll see this year. Its just that this is a lighter hearted, 'dont take seriously' kinda movie where your just supposed to enjoy the brainless action and not pay any attention to the rather 'light' storyline. I went into this expecting too much and as a result was dissapointed. Dont think star trek and think STARSHIP TROOPERS instead as this movie is far more in that ilk than Star Trek.

Although a good film, why is the best plot they can come up with is time travel...So many star trek films have plot based around time travel. Seriously your 300 hundred years in the future be a bit more creative!

I don't watch the series and the only reason I went to watch this in cinema is because my sister forced me to go, and she only went for Chris Pine, but it was such an AWESOME film that we had to go again. It's full of action and adventure. A wonderful story, great script, brilliant effects and CGI, and fantastic acting. Nothing to fault in this film, especially if you're not a fan of the Star Trek series.

If only the late great Gene Roddenberry were alive to see this. Finally the awsome Star Trek has been made for today, and not yester-year as unfortunately most of the efforts after the first few Next Generation series have been.

Star Trek is now cool again, as it so rightly should have been for all these years before.

Without trying to repeat what's already been written about this film. It truly is a masterpiece. It's got a real blend of old and new mixed superbly together. The producer has clearly done his homework. Eagerly awaiting the next one.

What a way to bring Star Trek movie saga up-to-date. An absolute mind-blower from beginning to end. By far the best film of 2009.

Star trek isn't really my thing, but when I saw this film I was amazed! the combination of a brilliant plot line, great actors, directors and FX make this a must see. I'd reccomend it to anyone! :-D

Do not, whatever you do, use the old Star Treak series or films as a referance to what this will be like.

This film keeps the Star Treak roots but does not fall into the bland trap that the old Treaks do. If its an edge of your seat action/adventure film with great comedy moments your after, this film is for you.

This movie couldn't be better! Now, i'm not a fan of the old series of star trek but this movie is completely amazing!

It has the best FX in a film i've ever seen and not only does it has an incredible cast but the story is impossibly clever and thrilling.And for the original Star Trek fans there are plenty of things brought back from old series to pick up on (Like the vulcan death grip spock uses). J.J Abrams directed this film Masterfully and made it truely unforgettable. Each role is supported by a fantastic actor/actress and makes you totally sink in to the film.

This movie had failed for me when I saw the pre-release trailers and clips. I was always going to see it and I LOVED it, it is a true Star Trek film with a modern take, full of action and adventure. I hope JJ gets control of the next couple of movies as well.

This movie is brilliant beyond belief! I have watched it 4 times in the cinema and it just kept getting better and better. There is constant action throughout the whole movie. Chris' acting was at its peak-he was great and JJ Abrams was a masterful director with a brilliant vision.

Loved this movie, it was totally different to all the previous ten, harking back to what made the original series great in focusing more on the relationship between the young Kirk, Chris Kline bringing back the rebellion and gun-ho fun that made Shatner so great, and the young uptight Spock.

Logic versus guts, the rulebook against the rule-breaker, chaos duking it out with order. Can't wait to see the next one.

Also, how awesome was the first five minutes?
