Description

In September 1944, flush with success after the Normandy Invasion, the Allies confidently launched Operation Market Garden, a wild scheme intended to put an early end to the fighting by invading Germany and smashing the Reich's war plants. But a combination of battlefield politics, faulty intelligence, bad luck and even worse weather led to disaster beyond the Allies' darkest fears.

This is the film which should have won best Director oscar for Richard Attenborough but the award was given to another director. I disagreed with the decision although the film that won was also very good.
However I do not agree with another review concerning the total accuracy of the events depicted as it differs from the memoirs of some of those who took part in the battle. Still who cares?
I very seldom give 5 stars to a film but this one is Well deserved it is a brilliant film.

This as about as authentic as it gets. It was extremely well researched, as they had to do with such a sensitive subject. The heroism of the British Paras and the Dutch in the firing line was unbelieveable. The film does not glorify war, nor make some nutty Politically Correct anti-war message - it just tells it how it was. Run, dont walk, and buy it - do not rent it - as you will end up wanting to watch it many times. It does not seem possible that they did what they did at that Bridge. Superb film, brilliant acting, resulting in feeling very humble in the face of such tenacious courage displayed by the British Paras.

One of the Best Films of WW2

I have seen this film quite a few times, Historically its fairly correct. well worth watching lots of action , based on Operation Market Garden undertaken in September 1944. This was the Airborne forces finest hour although the battle was a distaster for the British and Dutch, it made the reputation of the British Airborne Forces as second to none. The losses were horrific on both sides, but there in no doubting the heroism of the Red Devils and the Dutch people. If you get the chance visit Arnhem, there is lots to see and do, also visit Oosterbeek were most of the men now rest who were killed there, there is also the Airborne Museum at the Hartenstien Hotel. I have visit Arnhem and this area on several occasions, the Dutch people are fantastic.
As for the film, as mention before very well done well worth a watch, the jump scence were made by 3 Para and its as close as you can get to the real thing. Great film would recommend and can watch time amd and time again.

This is one of the greatest war movies ever made. For a start, it's a very entertaining movie with lots of great action. Plus, as a history movie, it's amazingly accurate unlike most war movies out there. A star studded cast
has made one fantastic movie, with one of the most memorable movie themes ever.
