Well I thought this was pretty good! What's all the fuss!
After looking at the mixed reviews on this film I figured that there's probably a good chance I'd enjoy this film. I bought it, watched it, and enjoyed it. Okay it's never going to make my top 10 top movies list, but I'd like to stress that this is movie intended for a young audience as was the original Thunderbirds series. So if you're an adult who fondly remembers the original show just ask yourself if you'd never seen the original show and somebody asked you to watch one of the episodes .. do you think you would like it? Probably not .. you'd probably think "This is a kids show". Well it is, and so is this movie.
That being said, if you're aware of this pitfall and you can just bring yourself to relax and enjoy a bit of an escape, then this is fine movie. I thought it was well made, the actors seemed to me to be right for the parts. Only gripe I have is that the 4 kids (Scott, Virgil, John and Gordon) are rather difficult to tell apart and they are rather background characters in the story .. whereas they were the cornerstone of the original series. The main focus of course being on Alan .. which is fine, even the original show did that from time to time. Bill Paxton is always awesome and I enjoy seeing him in anything. The bad guy is expertly played by a guy who we've seen doing WAAAAAY bigger bad guy stuff in other movies so it's nice to see a more tongue in cheek version and he seemed perfect for the roll. And Ron Cook who plays parker .. OMFG!, if he isn't Parker .. nobody is! Perfect casting.
Okay so the Rolls Royce is now a Ford .. big deal .. it's Pink and flies .. that's all it needs to do. If BMW (who own Rolls) would have said yes to being in the movie then all would be well, but they didn't, so Lady P's car is a Ford!Thunderbird 1 looks awesome, nice job on that one boys. Thunderbird 2 is a bit of a bathtub, but then again it suits it's purpose and job. Thunderbirds 3, 4 and 5 are pretty much what they should be so no gripes there. Only real gripe I have with this movie is the boring music score provided by Hans Zimmers company (Yeah sure .. like Hans actually writes anything anymore!). I wish they had given this job to a british composer who knows Barry Gray's style and would have given us the 'zing' that the original Thunderbirds music had. Instead the music is just very middle of the road .. so-so .. meh! But then again most of you people watching the film wouldn't know a music score if it bit you in the a** so lets not worry about it ey!
Jonathon Frakes (Cmdr. Riker!) has done a nice job directing this and I hope he does more movies in the directorial seat soon. Again, this is a kids movie. So if you're an adult just remember who this movie is for. It's NOT for you if you 'grew up' watching the original show. It's for your kids .. please remember this!
I loved it anyways, and I did grow up watching the original show (Well the repeats anyways). I'd rather watch this than the sh*t they have on TV these days, at least this entertained me!
